So as my black ute is in hibernation after a few big days out, i thought it was time to start a project for the track. Something i have no sympathy for, because seeing my black ute with wear and tear from track work started to make me cry. Its been through everything with me and i cant bare to let it go to car heaven.
My two best mates and i have done a few Ls1 conversions now (vl, vk, hq, r32 2 door and currently a r32 4 door is underway) and the r32 is the coolest one out of the lot. Ideally this car is to be used for drifting and the thought of something jap did sound good......but i just cant tear myself away from holden utes, this is my 4th.
So here it is.....
Name: Tom
Model: 03 vy ss
Color: Currently purple, i fucking hate it. so it will be painted soon enough
Engine Type: 5.7lt LS1
Engine Mods: Isky cam, trend rods, pac dual springs, rollmaster timing chain, underdriven pulley.
Power: dunno yet.
Exhaust:Pacemaker extractors, 3" dual system.
Gearbox: T56 6 speed
Diff: mini spooled 3.9
Brakes: vz r8
Suspension:Tein adjustables all round
Wheels/Tyres: 18 x 9.5 Koya RG Teks. Courtesy of Rob at Tech9.
Interior: OMP Seat, 5 Point harness, Suede drift wheel, sheetmetal switch plate.
Audio: pushrod power.
the day i bought it, after closer inspection it was extremely straight and just needed a good clean to remover concrete splatter.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo7.jpg
The first step was suspension, so Tein adjustables all round were thrown in along with the vz r8 brakes off my black ute.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo6.jpg
At first i was just going to bang a cam in her and be done with it, but after dropping the oil and seeing the state of it, we decided to pull the motor out and give it the once over. All the rocker gear, sump, timing assembly was removed and given a decent clean. new timing chain, double valve springs and trend pushrods were fitted.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo4.jpg
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo10.jpg
I removed the whole wiring loom from front to rear and started again. The complete dash was removed and just a sheetmetal panel carbon wrapped was put in place. Less is best here. The entire cab was painted matte black and the cage painted vibrant red. (needs a few touch ups as im not skilled in painting)
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo9.jpg
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo11.jpg
The old fuel tank was thrown out and a new 40L ali was put in place, along with a bosch 044, aeroflo filter, aeromotive reg and a combo of speedflow fittings.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo3.jpg
Early last year i installed a milling machine at the tech9 stable so they could drill out there own rims, with the thought of having something jap on my black ute i just didnt get around to it because it was never seeing any road time. After some thought it was just easier to buy something jap looking and play around with spacers to get the look and ride i wanted. So tech9 hooked me up with these for a price no one could beat. Not sure if ill leave them gun metal or paint the red....
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo.png
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr132/ssick_2008/photo8.jpg
Currently just need to put the motor back in, get my clutch back and get an exhaust built.
BURNOUT.
Massive thanks to two of my best mates Brendon (LS1R32 owner) and Pat (LS1RX7 owner) and of course Mitch and Deb at Waperformance. Nothing would be going on with out these people.
enjoy.

Fucking absolutely awesome dude. Will it be seeing powercruise this year? Is this going to be a dedicated drift car? Or is it going to see drift and circuit?

Burnout! Does this mean that the black beast will be back on the road again?

Looks like it should fit the bill just nicely :) All these dedicated racing cars make me wish i could fund one :( Keep rims gunmetal though definately

Main aim is to drift it to put a smile on my face.
Not sure whether to bring this one or the black one to powercruise, see how well it can go around the track first.
Miggy - the black one will be out soon enough. Its in getting a makeover.

Awesome build boss! Leave the purple i say, its suits you down to a tee :D
Good to see you stick with Holden also and running meth will certain have its benefits. Have you thought about running it on a 50/50 mix of 98 & e85? Might be slightly cheaper and still have some benefits.
You and you mates do LS1 conversions ay..... I will soon have a VK shell after i transplant the Ecotec into a VB. May have to send you a PM :)

It is not staying purple. It annoys me to think i own a purple ute.

That hard cover is just for when its stationary to protect fuel system from the weather. Has a nice big crack down one side. I've got SSICK plates for this ute already.

Nice one mate, should be a fun setup when its finished!
Explain the fuel reg se tup to me tho...?
SSICK
23-06-2011, 06:17 PM
Cheers guys.
Fuel comes out of the tank, through the pump, through the filter into the reg, return from the reg goes straight into tank, out of reg to fuel rails...
-Luke-
23-06-2011, 06:24 PM
How does the reg maintain pressure feeding the rail and not restricting the return?
EDIT: Im not trying to be a smart arse just curious as to how plumbing it this way would maintain pressure in the rail?
if the pump fed straight to the rail and the return was plumbed into the port the pump is in I could understand it?
mitchy
23-06-2011, 06:25 PM
How does the reg maintain pressure feeding the rail and not restricting the return?
i think you'll find the purpose of a fuel regulator is to restrict (regulate) the return, thus pressurising the rail.
-Luke-
23-06-2011, 06:28 PM
I think you'l find the way its plumbed now there is no restriction in the return from the rail
What a pig, great work Tom! I'm so jealous...
What colour are you going to paint it? Maybe stickerbomb the whole car instead??
mitchy
23-06-2011, 06:33 PM
I think you'l find the way its plumbed now there is no restriction in the return from the rail
they run a return-less system from the rails, the fuel is essentially bled off via the reg.
-Luke-
23-06-2011, 06:35 PM
Thanks. return less fuel system answers my question. So the hose on the RH side of the tank is only a breather then?
SSICK
23-06-2011, 06:38 PM
Bingo.
Car will be black. No sticker bombing for me damo.

Tuned tonight by Mitch, made 416rwhp. Extremely happy with it.
Just have to learn how to drive it now, though with the cage and fixed seat i feel a little too close to the wheel as my arms and legs aren't as extended as in my black ute..... it feels a little odd and will take some getting use to.
Can anyone shed some light on shortening the steering column?
Turbo2.6L
31-08-2011, 09:55 AM
Do you plan on running all the covers/shrouds around the column Tom? If not, i'd imagine it would be as simple as taking the column to someone that is able to cut/weld it straight & put it back in. May affect the height as well though, so be mindful of this before cutting!

That's a pretty decent power figure for the ol ls1 should defiantly turn a tyre or two. Is there no room to move the seat back at all? Adam put the seats way back in mine, I can just reach the excelorator as it is.
SSICK
31-08-2011, 10:41 PM
the seat is about 200mm from the rear firewall (without a cage my seat is hard up against that.) With this cage and fixed seat i lose that 200mm and it just makes me feel like my arms and legs are bent too much. Like im going to push the clutch through the firewall when cog swapping.
Cheers for the handbrake too man, looks and works a treat. Will be fighting Scott for your triple plate next.........:P

had it out at drift prac tonight, went pretty well. It had an extra 500hp due to the rain for the first hour or so, once it dried up it was a bit more stable and controllable. Still managed to spin a couple of times. Had an extreme vibration towards the end of the night as the rear end got out of shape, felt like diff bounce but would come in after i had it sliding.....wierd. Collie on Sunday to keep me going, cant wait.

Had a killer day yesterday down in Collie. The weather was shit for the first hour or so but was kind of good in a way that it was easy to slide around and learn the car without massive speed. Then the track dried up and all hell broke loose. The boys in our LS1 R32's were getting 4 laps to a brand new set of federals and Pats 32 was throwing out flames. Managed to get around the track a few times without spinning and got to try the hydro handbrake into the main hairpin.......good fun. The diff bounce was getting more violent so ill be changing all the rear bushes and seeing if i can adjust the Teins or maybe swap them out for the Koni's from the black ute.
Outright 1st - WA Perf Ls1 R32 2 door -Brendon
Outright 2nd- WA Perf Ls1 R32 4 door -Pat
Outright 4th - WA Perf VY ute -Me
1st place Aussie muscle drifter - Wa Perf VY ute - Me.
Massive thanks to Brendon and Pat for helping put the ute together otherwise it would still be sitting in my garage looking stock, and a major thanks to Wa Performance Mitch and Deb for help and support for us 3 guys.
Still have a smile on my face from yesterday.

Left it as is Dean, it wasn't too bad actually. Ill fuck with it after the next event in Collie in 2 weeks.
As for pics and vids, give it a few days and im sure they will come. Mini was there with us but kindly helped out as a flag marshal (CHEERS MINI) at the back chicane so didnt get any pics. I met 5ltrs of fun down there and he was filming a bit. Nice to meet you mate!
The 2 skylines were a major hit with everyone, had lots of people talking.

probably not the best person to ask as i have only ever 'drifted' wanners on friday night just gone. I like collie better as the walls are further from the track haha. Id say for the top guys wanners is a much faster track.
come to CDA5 in 2 weeks. we really need the numbers for this to go ahead. $315 gets you 2 days drifting and a dick load of track time, beers and a bbq.

Nice effort Tom! Must be good bloody fun. Keep it up mate.
I'd love to Tom but I get back from work on the Sunday arvo, so really bad timing for me. :( Are there any drift events at Collie in October? Unfortunately I have only got 1 month in Perth off as I do a 6month on/1month off swing. Already lined up Powercruise and no limits on the 20th, most likely go in an AHG or Midvale day aswell so it's going to be pretty chockers.. Powercruise has drift but not enough to cure the appetite haha.. if you know of anything, please let me know!
Cheers dude.

Adjusted the rear shocks and replaced the standard subframe bushes with new nolathane items, hopefully it kills the diff bounce.

Lil update,
ute has had a few more outings and im alot more comfortable in it now, definately dont have drifting mastered yet but i can say that i can drift the whole of wanners now. Have been to collie for the drift and burnout day and walked away with 4th overall and 1st aussie drifter, CDA5 in collie too, had heaps of fun. Went to wanners for the all day drift prac last sunday......had a smile on my face all day.
still needs a lick of paint. ashamed to say its mine still.

The support Brendon, Pat and Myself get from Mitch and Deb is fucking awesome. Late nights, plenty of phone calls, part swapping and some of the ideas they come up with is fantastic. Couple that with the reliability of our cars and it sure makes for a winning combo. The boys skylines definitely get the tongues wagging on and off the track. You can hear the tyres start to cry as soon as the ignition is turned.
