Me and the missus bought ourselves bikes the other day in an attempt to get a bit of fitness happening, and I know there's a few bicycle enthusiasts on here, so...

What bike lock/s would you recommend, and where could we get them? Nothing overly urgent as we're both on holidays at the moment so we'd only be riding to work and back, but when Uni goes back we may start riding to Uni (well, bike then train then bike).

I'd prefer a key-lock, but the missus would prefer a combination-lock for hers.

The Kryptonite brand looks alright, yes/no? They range from 8mm to a whopping 25mm thick armoured cable:

As with all my investments I like to protect them, but at the same time I don't want to spend stupid amounts - the bike itself was only $500 so it's certainly no $6k carbon-fibre work-of-art. The Kryptonite's seem to be in the range of $30-40 which is ideal for both of us, but the only place I can find that has the 20-25mm variants is Cassons, which I think may only be a distributor...

Also, quick-release wheels...how do you keep these safe - chain/cable lock through them, or...?

As always, any help is appreciated.

Rule of thumb I had always been told, a bike lock should be worth in the 10-20% of what you paid of the bike itself.

I'd just go down the shop and tell them how much you want to pay and let them show you. See Rex at Avanti in Rockingham if you're SOR.

Fuck... I hope you don't ride a carbon framed road bike! Hello $1000 lock :p

Go to bunnings buy a nice thick hardened steel chain about 1mtr worth then some clear plastic hose that fits over the chain also from bunnings then buy a decent pad lock.
This is how my mate locks up his dirt bikes and does the trick for less that $50 and is probably stronger than anything else in that price range

^ Not a bad idea actually, would be able to buy the chain long enough to fit through the wheels etc... Ideally I'd like braided steel chain so I'll see what Bunnings have.

I stumbled upon the TiGr project (http://tigrlock.com/), which looks top notch, but is yet to be released...

have to ride around everywhere with it but.

personally wouldnt bother leaving a bike anywhere i felt it had to be locked up. if u ensure someone cant steal your bike, they prob just settle for a seatpost of set of wheels

Yeah that's true, 'safety in numbers' would work when I'm at Uni - there's certainly plenty of bikes always locked up there.

Ah well, I'll look around at Bike Shops and fail that, Bunnings!

Cheers guys.

Slightly of topic but I'm interested to know... What's the theft rates like on motorbikes?? And how do people minimize the chance of motorbikes getting nicked?

dirtbikes and scooter theft is extremely high. dirtbikes because 99% of the time they aint registered and there is no record of them so makes them very hard to trace and catch.
Scooters because most can be started without a key and its just oppertunist theft.
Sports bike get stolen but they most modern bikes have coded keys and other security devices like that making them harder to steal. but like anythin if someone wants it there is always a way.

Kryptonite have totally redesigned their keybarrels, they did a huge worldwide recall for those locks.
