This is my daily driver its a 1989 FSM Niki or as everywhere else in the world knows it , a
Fiat 126.
There was only 2000 or so bought in to Australia so Im told. They are all manual 2 cylinder
rear wheel drive aircooled engines. They are the only production car ever to have a 1/4 mile
time quicker than its 0-100 time. The only option available upon new purchase was a sunroof
making it the 'luxury model'

The longest drives I usually do are 5-10km so anything else just
gets trashed around a small town when being driven on a daily basis.
The motor is a 2cylinder air cooled 650cc petrol , the gearbox is 4 speed manual with
transaxle making it rear wheel drive.
The fuel tank holds 16.5L and I get around 200km to a tank.
It will not spin a wheel even on gravel so for a hoon its a perfect car I cant get in trouble.

Its progress has been slow but steady , as something breaks or stops I fix it , the
maintenance schedule has been dismal but on the upside everything I know about mechanical
and elctrical side of engines I have taught myself from this car.
It has been converted to electronic ignition so faults usually come from failed
modules , carby leaks or just generally crappy wiring.

Once the new engine goes in it will be looked after a little better but will always
be an ongoing project , something out of the ordinary that gives me a smile everytime
I drive it.

Currently to get into a good condition Niki would be around 1500-200 but given they are
getting rarer the price will inevitably go up as the Fiat 500's.

This is my build log over the last 10 years , enjoy :)

.................................................. .................................................. .

Found this car in someones back yard about 2001 , it was down the side of his shed , basically
complete but not running , I swapped it for a 4 channel car amplifier.
We towed it home and began to strip down the carby and flush the tank out , put some new plugs
and fuel in , had no keys for it so I hard wired the ignition to a switch and fitted a push button start.
Eventually we got it running and drove round for a bit on back roads getting it to run properly.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build.jpg

A week or so later I was at the pits getting it inspected for rego. Its primary purpose was to build a
serious SPL car as thats what I was into at the time , I drove it round for a couple of months enjoying
life , I got a call from a mate saying a guy had 2 of them locally and wanted to sell the 1 that was
basically a parts car for $100 , this was more suited for an SPL car because we were going to
extensively destroy it anyway.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build3.jpg

This was about as far as we got with that 1 , it ended up at the tip because I lost interest and the
scene was dying , plus I discovered burnouts

We trial fitted some 18s but yeah dont think they will ever fit

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build1.jpg

I drove the regoed car around for a few years keeping it running with constant problems as they
do with these , eventually it got the point where the engine needed new rings , the gearbox had lost
3rd and 4th , there was minimal rust that I wanted to treat before it got worse , it came off the road
and was stripped of everything and mate did the rust repairs for me.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build12.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build13.jpg

At the time I was making a decision what colour to paint it the first HSV GTO images of the era were being
released and I liked this colour , quick trip to Holden I had the paint code and thats where it got a little
crazy , the panel shop I took it to decided it in there best interest to make it flawless given how neat and
tidy the body was , some 12 months later (I was in no hurry ) out rolled a blue Niki , inside and out , every
part was covered in blue !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build14.jpg

I had the colour on my car before it was even released in this town , turned some heads that for sure !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build19.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build20.jpg

Given it was a HSV colour I thought it only fitting to add my own personal touch for a badge/sticker

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build15.jpg

While the painting was going on I got new rings fitted to the engine , fixed the gearbox and gave it all a dulux overhaul !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build21.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build22.jpg

Made up some quick custom door trims for it just so I had music for awhile until I decided what to fit properly to it.
Given the car had no key I had fitted a remote alarm to it to get over the pits , while I was doing the doors I
installed central locking.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build24.jpg

Once everything was back together and on the road I drove round for while to iron out any bugs.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build25.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build26.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build27.jpg

I used to have constant issues with timing and ignition problems , a local auto sparky fitted an electronic
ignition module for me and a Commdore coil pack , the spark now is insane , hasnt missed a beat since !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build23.jpg

On the hunt for some wheels I found these over east and photo shopped them on but alas never got to purchase
them so if anyones come across a set Im keen !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build28.jpg

Nothing really changed for a few years , it was a daily driver around town and has racked up about 20,000km in the last 5 years.

I got a little bit excited 1 day and must have over revved it , it didnt run quite right afer that , figuring I broke something internally
as there was fuel coming back out the carby while it was running I dropped the motor out of the green car and fitted
that ( took about an hour) , thats been in there for couple of years now but just recenetly its starting losing oil pressure , the
light comes on at idle so I suspect my lack of maintenance may have resulted in shagged bearings.

I had already stripped the original motor down only to find it was a rocker jumped off the push rod so not a major , the tappets
had never really been adjusted correctly so not really surprising.
I rebearinged the original motor and fitted new gaskets to everything in an attempt to stop it leaving oil in everyones driveway ...
The head has been cleaned and machined.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build30.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build29.jpg

Have been doing a bit painting myself lately and basically teaching myself so figured I have a go at it with the engine covers.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build34.jpg

This is how the enigne currently sits , Im waiting for big end bearings and gearbox gaskets to turn up from UK before I can
complete it and swap it over.
It has brand new carby , rocker cover , points , rebuilt alternator and pretty much every new small part I have come across.
Before I swap the engne over Im going to rewire the bay to try and hide whats left in there , it needs a respray because I relocated
the ignition module now so theres bare metal.

1 of the biggest faults I have always had is the elctrical system , the head lights are dull , the wipers dont work if head lights are
on , if the head lights are on while indicating and the brake pedal is pressed the indicators stop , the ingtion system pulses the
interior light and theres a constant surge while accelerating.
I always thought this was due to alt issues not charging properly but as it runs out it was just a poorly executed wiring system , the
ignition circut runs off 1 wire that loops around to everything , Im not sure where the weak link is but I wired constant 12V into it
using a relay and now evrything works perfectly !

Since I have a spare harness i have sat down for a few night disecting it and rewiring it to be more suitable , also incorporating
the alarm , stereo and CDL into it. Im in the process of building a complete dash out of MDF with new gauges if I can get new
gauges to work somehow.
The original fuse block used ceramic fuses so they will be going , the existing harness had no relays in it which kind of gives you
an idea of why it struggles to run anything elctronic.
I have purchased 12 LED pilot lights to replace all the warning lights so the instrument cluster will be gone completely and hopefully
incorporate a new digital speedo.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build33.jpg

Under construction still.

While surfing UK Ebay I stumbled across this little gem had to have :)

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build32.jpg

Thanks to a local business I now have new blue seat belts that actually retract !
Ufortunately it now makes the red seats look somewhat hideous and expecting once the new carpets in going to be worse so seats
will be next on the agenda !

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/IMG_1572.jpg

I finally stopped the back window leaking so the back shelf I made years ago will be finished off and trimmed in suade also , just
another thing on the list.

The interior as it stands but rest assured it wont look like this for long :)

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build31.jpg

So the old bearings seem to be pretty much over used , crank was fine
and Im guessing by the ammount of brass in my sump of current motor
the ones in that are going to be even worse !
Check out the size of these big end bearings :)

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/IMG_1597.jpg

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/IMG_1602.jpg

This was another car I picked up locally , no rego , no engine , stipped it for parts.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/build2.jpg

Some forum members may recognise this car from Motorvation , its now also gone to FIAT heaven !

Love these little things, Fiat 126. Mate's dad has one with an original sunroof sitting in his garage pondering whether to sell or to keep, he imported it himself from memory.

Drove one of these in Poland... they go hard but was a mission to get into the driver's seat! Contortionist spec entry! haha

Great looking car mate, congrats!

PS. Haven't read all the way through, but Hyabusa engine would be epic?

Seen drifting videos of these cars through Polish forests - golden.

A chick at school had one. We picked it up and turned it sideways between two cars in the parking lot, and waited for her to try and drive it out.

She was not amused. A 578496924 point turn later and she got out.

Nice mate!!!

they are called 'MALUCH' in Poland - direct translation would mean 'small one', you call a kid maluch, like a baby.

These were made in a factory in Poland and badged 126p, my dad had one and man - you could fit almost anything into them. Dad used to be a fridge and washing machine mechanic and the amount of washing machines and fridges carried in that was unreal - just take the passenger seat out and if thats not enough space, take the drivers seat out and put some bricks in to sit on.

They actually made people deaf - made over 145dBs i think when at full song on the highway. I remember the first lot had these 2 cables running down the middle to these little buttons, you had to lift one up and then lift and hold the other one - that would start the motor - crazy little things!

They have a full on racing class for these in Poland too.

Glad they are still 'appreciated' :)

just as well u didnt pay for the paint job as you would of ended up paying for about 2.5ltrs of paint that wasnt used. 5ltr of paint to paint that is rediculous!

May have been an exageration/typo on my part.
Prob would have been 3L of colour , 5L all up or so , cant recall exactly , it was about 6 years ago.
At the same time I had painted a 1/3rd scale SPL car made from MDF.

What's better than 1 Hayabusa motor??

2 Hayabusa motors. :D
http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1562068.htm
Comes at a VERY hefty price though. :(

Very tidy build. Like it a lot. Also laughed at hanging the car out to dry.

The price isn't really too bad considering the engineering work involved. Don't get me wrong it's a shit load of cash but any well built engine is going to run to those figures.

What would a 2nd hand 'busa set you back (written off bike spec)?

Been busy doing my wiring harness where I can and waiting for the rest of my bits to turn up from OS.
The new exhaust is fitted and engine wired up almost ready for swap over , I havnt painted the gearbox yet because I want to make sure its all sealed before I get carried away with it.

The current gearbox has dropped a bearing and wont hold 3rd so I will prob fix that 1 with new gaskets and paint that to swap it later on.

The new harness has taken some time to construct , incorporated the alarm into it and a new fuse block , have removed some old wiring circuts and added in some of my own , still a biut to do on it but for the most part its done and working.

Only way to learn is try these things yourself :)

Also have made up a rough template for how the center console will sit and switches/lights locations.
I really need my Calais back to drive so I can take this off the road for a week or 2 to strip it and swap everything over but atm its my only means of transport !

Circa $5 - 6k. Just walk into your local wreckers and wipe the blood off it.

Killer build. Any thoughts on spraying the exhaust to prevent surface rust in the future ruining it's looks?

KAL SPL

I think anything I coat/paint the exhaust in will only come off over time the same way it will inevitably rust.
For $80 I will just buy another muffler if it comes to it.

Motor finally called it a day :(
10,000km over a 3 year period I can't complain.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x127/KAL_SPL/Niki/c8c0f63a5732d88b93f2a9e7276f5c97.jpg

Stretched timing chain resulted in slip , metal went through oil pump and bearing wrecking the cam , block and pretty much everything.
Luckily I have a spare motor :)

New timing chain , rings , bearings and gaskets are ordered.
Also going to refresh pretty much everything and a new clutch , figured while engine was out I may aswell clean it up a bit more , hide some more wiring etc , fit an electric fuel pump and repainted the bay.

Anyway , progress will be slower than usual being on apprentice wages sux arse and shit ain't cheap.

Just need to give everything a good clean before assembly , hopefully this motor lasts another 50,000km.

All back in for now , wired/plumbed electric fuel pump in but discovered battery is flat , charger and spare battery both at work FML , it gave 1 fire while cranking so I must have done something right but I have thus far guessed the timing and need to get some voltage to rotate it to get it to start then set timing.

Still got a lot of cleaning to do name over time I will smooth the bay and respray it , make a stainless exhaust for it and give it a wash , for now I just need it to bloody run again !

It's for sale , won't be cheap but it's a bloody weapon !

So finally got to drive it today for first time since March , it's still got no oil pressure according to the warning light on the dash but it runs smooth and flawlessly , I very much doubt the light/switch/wiring is at fault as it hasn't been modified and I tried another switch. My last hope is the oil pump gears are worn and it's losing pressure , there is oil on the top end and crank etc is full so it's definitely pumping around , I need to try find the right fitting to adapt a manual gauge to next before I do anything else. Feels good to have it finally running thoug.
