virtualbox works well but runs as a virtual machine not the easiest option

Try Right Click the programs EXE/Shortcut and "Run as Administrator".
Sometimes programs coded for XP want a little more access rights to your computer.

set-up duel boot with xp & W764....was what i had to do to run older motec 16bit apps etc...easy to shrink W7 volume then install xp and set duel boot with nlite.
....you`ll need al least 4gb for xp...~7gb if you update xp to sp3(damn shit takes another gig+ )
I use the Win XP virtual PC mode, which you can download from the Microsoft site.

Right click program shortcut > Compatibility Tab > Run this program in compatability mode for: Win XP [TICK]
Might need to tick 'Run this program as an administrator.
That should work, unless its a program that directly needs to interface with drivers, program will expect 32 bit, OS will only have 64 bit)
What are you trying to run?
Would like to know too :)

Gotcha, that'll teach me for skim reading :p
Usually problems comes down to legacy code issues, driver issues, or just plain shit coding.
If it's an old game your trying to run, try playing with the visual settings (in compat tab) also... took me ages to work out how to get Starcraft (1) working on win7 x64, ended up having an unusual work around.

cant for the life of me remember what they call it, so google is your friend.

Have you tried googling the software name + x64 win7?
ie. sex simulator 5000 + windows 7 + 64 bit
Might find an easy answer.

Bring laptop to my place during the week, keen to get my hands grubby and make this stubborn piece of software do what its told.
microsofts option appears as though it isnt compatible with my version of windows... thatd be fucking right.
You have to download both parts, it does do a windows 7 64bit piece, I had it working before.

Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider 1.3b
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=34
it doesn't install as such but basically you run it, select "Enable Test Mode", get a prompt saying its done then select Exit. Restart and you will see a watermark in the bottom right hand corner of your wallpaper saying Test Mode Windows 7 Build XXXX.
Win7 stays in "test mode" even after restarts. then just run again and turn test mode off, restart and back to your programs not working again :p
been using it for 14months and no issues at all

or...
Press F8 before windows starts booting and select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"
You just need to remember to do that each time you want to use any non signed drivers.
I need to do that everytime i want my laptop to connect to my ECU.

A large majority of programs won't install on x64 operating systems but will run in 64 bit without problems.
Because it's a third party program I'm guessing it doesn't have many Windows integrations into the registry and system driver files - you could probably install it into memory stick on a PC running XP x86 and just copy the files over onto Windows 7.
I did this for a few old games.

Here ya go - see if this'll run for you: http://fyels.com/o8D00p
Just a zipped copy of the folder after installing to program files on a 32bit Win7 machine. Fingers crossed you have all the dll's etc that it might have installed in System32.
(Edit: found the files it copied to C:\Windows\System32: http://fyels.com/78D00p)

thanks shane fingers crossed it works! legend
Older haltech's are the worst to connect to. Same yourself the headaches and buy a recon'd lappy with a serial port.

If it shits itself, old laptop with COM ports are CHEAP to buy second-hand. I've got a spare one here, screen hinges are rooted, would suit tuning laptop.
