Hey guys,

I'm wanting to take off the rubber bumpers on the outside of my doors.
I did quick google search on how to remove them, basically the 2 most popular results were, heat it up, scrape as much off as you can, then wax and grease remover, and, that it can't be done without damaging the paint ?

I tried on a damaged spare door I've got, and not having luck with just heat + wax and grease remover. I cut as much of the glue off the door as I could with a scraper, but it did cut through the clear coat a couple of times, and still wax and grease remover failed to remove what was left, even with heat.

I tried just the same technique (minus gutting the glue off) on a section of the inside of the door and it worked great...the stuff on the outside is baked on hardcore....

Help ?

Without seeing it you can't really tell.

Most door guards are fixed to the door with a mixture of two way tape and sikaflex 'and its not easy to remove sikaflex from a door without damaging the paintwork.

You can get rubber wheels 'which can be attached to pneumatic or variable speed tools', that can be used to remove sikaflex but you have to be careful when using them as you can burn the paintwork.

Best bet would be to take off as much as you can with a plastic scraper or sharp razor blade and keep trying with wax and grease remover 'prepsol', and taking it off a little bit at a time. Alternately you could also try using a heavier polish compound to take it off (or a mixture of both).

You could also try using thinners but when using thinners you need to be absolutely sure of the paint type that has been used on your vehicle.

If the paint type is acrylic its going to melt it but if the paint type is 2pac then you wont have a problem.

Note: When you have taken the bulk of the sikaflex off I would stop using any form of metal scraper/razor blade and use something that wont damage the paint as much 'in the past I've used bits off old plastic bench top coverings and just sharpened the edges'.

Pics would make it easier to see what the best course of action would be.
