Righto... Might as well pop up a new thread as I've not got my hands on a new ride! :)

Many of you will recognise this one... and apparently most of you have already driven it!.. So we can be 'eskimo brothers'! ;)

Anyway... I bought Jared's 2010 Evo X GSR with the Super-Special-auTomagic gearbox! Picked it up last night, and am pretty stoked with it!

Before everyone gets too carried away, the car has had a solid clean and been disinfected, as well as had all of the roo-fur removed etc etc... ;)

A couple of pics of it tucked away in my garage... Will try to get a couple of 'proper' ones once this weather improves!..

http://i.imgur.com/6b17e.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/FrV6U.jpg

For those who aren't aware, the car is pretty well as it came from the factory, bar a CF wrapped roof(thanks Gav) and a completely debadged boot.. Which I personally think looks a touch naked, and am thinking I'll put the 'Evolution' badge back on, just to balance it a bit!

The car is stacks of fun, and I am adjusting to the TC-SST box and enjoying it heaps... Plenty of plans to mod away, but first, the bank account needs some recovery time!

Looks nice man. EVO > dak dak any day :P

What's the difference between EVO, GSR and ralliart though? All very similar packages no?

Evo was released in 2 guise's... GSR and MR:

GSR = base model, 5sp manual option or TC-SST

MR = TC-SST only, HID headlamps, Fancy scuff plates, usually part-leather heated seats, RF sound system, usually MMCS with sat nav etc... maybe more?.. No difference in power output and is probably a tad slower due to being slightly heavier. It does have slightly better brakes I believe? and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but it's not a huge difference!

The Ralliart Lancer is basically the VRX-skinny-shell with a downtuned Evo motor running a smaller turbo and Evo 9 drivetrain. Came with a downtuned version of the TC-SST gearbox as well, but without the 'hardcore' S-Sport setting... also poverty brakes and seats... and the VRX wheels as well.. but this is designed as a competitor to the WRX, rather than the STi/Evo.

There was also a limited edition TMR Evo which was released last year with more go, and some funky stuff... but as per usual, it was drastically overpriced IMO and aftermarket gear will come in much cheaper and most likely do a better job. :)

Pro's/Con's of flappy paddle box over normal stick shift??

I don't have a heap of experience with this yet, but from what I understand, the TC-SST is definitely quicker shifting than a manual, it is also simpler to drive having a 'd' option that means no thinking is required. It is a bigger/heavier gearbox though, so there's additional weight there, and obviously a small amount of electronic/mechanical lag from the paddle's/shifter when you are in manual mode.
The 5 speed is from all accounts a strong one, but I'm told it's not the best feeling gearbox, with a long throw, and obviously just the 5 gears as oppose to the TC-SST's 6 speed.

I originally wanted a manual, but I love the feel of the TC-SST and am getting used to it, and don't regret it at all.

Just get some Rotas man. Force-D. 999 for full set of 18's in hard offsets.

Rota's are going to be hard to turn down... Even if I use them just as street wheels, which will be the majority of use the car will see.
$999 for an 18x10 +22 wheel that fills the guards up beautifully and can run up to 275 tyres... Wow!

Otherwise, there are plenty of other options from the more expensive manufacturers and a 19" will definitely look better most of the time... But we're talking quite a bit more $$s for them!?

Hahah... Have PM'd Rhys... but seems there is a bit of interest from parties in line before me, so will see...

Keen tho! Just means will be wheels before coilovers, so possibly lift kit for a little while... also 19x10 +15 is going to be SUPER-aggressive even on the X... but at that price, would be worth having a crack!

i see, jut looks like the complexity or whatever he option is called was turned down :P looks cool either way!!

They are RS-D's yes Gav?

Plenty of options available, most of them are crackpipe-dollars though... :(

For a weekend driver I can see the point in a big dollar wheel, but for something that's going to be parked at the shops, drive me to work and back and get a lot of general 'use'... I just don't want to spend the whole time worrying that my $3k-$4k wheels are getting stone chips... or heaven forbid, a pothole ding!!... :(

RS_Gav
16-06-2011, 01:55 PM
Yer RS-D's mate. They are 19's with 265 rubber on them from memory. Not sure of offset but I'm pretty sure they would be "Tocchi Approved" He didn't have to do any other body mods and hasn't had any rubbing problems. But you are right. Spending that kind of money, you wouldn't want to have any other problems!

I'm doing my best to find something genuine that is a good enough deal to make it worth my while turning down the Rota's... and those RS's certainly would have been worth it!

Hard to top $999 for a brand new set in a variety of styles and good offsets available locally.

Theres a company called BB5 or something that does BBS LM knockoffs for around $800 a set, 19x9.5's or something similar...?

Raderwerks used to do some exact replica's of BBS LM's they marketed as BB5's, but they stopped making them a couple of years ago after some legal pressure from BBS.

Thanks mate, I have spoken with Wei and he is active on the Evo forums and usually posts new stock in there. If I end up going with an 18" Rota wheel, then he will be my first call, but as far as I am aware, Rota aren't doing any 19" wheels, apart from maybe the LMGT4 copies, which I'm not really keen on.

I think I'd probably want something with a bit more 'dish' than that... plus it seems they are offering 4 x 8.5 or 2 x 8.5 and 2 x 9.5 staggered, and the lip size is the same all round...

I'm half keen on the 17's they do of those LM knockoffs... But for the price I reckon I'll be able to find some interesting real-brand-name 17x9's for the MPS.

What kind of offsets are you looking at for the X?

Ben Wha

Jimmy_S
17-06-2011, 01:39 PM
The X will fit some pretty aggressive offsets, depends on the width of the wheel obviously, but up to a 10" +15/20 or a 9.5" +10 I guess?

May have to dial a little extra camber in or go with a slightly skinnier tyre with the more aggressive fitments, but they'll fit!

I don't mind the Linea Corsa stuff, but if I was going for them, I'd probably grab the LC808 in a 19x10:

FYI, a place called Cartel online in Aus now sells Varrstoen rims. Just became a sponsor on Silwa and offering up sets of 18s for 1300. No mention of 19s, but im sure they can source.

LOL... Thanks guys! ;)

I think I'm going to take the super-mega-shiny heat shield off and give it to Gav for some CF wrap <3 though!

Skitzo - Yeah, apparently Cartel-online do the Varrstoen gear now, but they, like anyone else, order them in as the order's come through, so there is no real advantage to using them as far as I can see? I can get the wheels direct from Varrstoen US for US$1500 delivered, but Scott and Josh are looking at signing up to be local distributor's.. So if they go ahead with that, I'll be ordering through them for sure! :)

Well.. Small update... I seem to be endlessly waiting for coilovers and rims to be available to order, and as usual, I am pretty average at being patient...

So yesterday I ordered an AVH-P3350BT along with a Stinger 2-Din facia to suit and a Stinger S/Wheel Control adapter... Should get it all next week!

http://i.imgur.com/iz3zl.jpg

Also, met up with Gav(GT Graphics) yesterday, who kindly wrapped my mirror-finish heat shield in flat black vinyl, which matches the rest of the stuff under the bonnet perfectly! He also side mounted my 'number plate' ;)

Much <3 Gav!!

Cheers man...

Wheels will happen once coilovers get sorted... and I get my tax organised hopefully! :)

I was under the impression that the vinyl plate was a slap-on-the-wrist offense, but I've been told today that in fact it is viewed far more seriously now, so I will be getting the double-sided tape out this evening and sticking my actual plate over the top tonight.
Won't look quite as neat, but should still do the trick and keep the cops happy! :)

I've seen a real small one on the front end of an early MX5 once and never quite known if it's legal.

I'd imagine though if it was, many people would be doing it.

After being confirmed to me that the penalty is significantly more severe than I was aware for having the stick-on plate, I've mounted my actual plate over the top of the vinyl one.

It looks much the same as pictured above, but without the legality issues, so I'm happy with that! :)

Well.. Due to an unforeseen sequence of events... I have been offered the opportunity to pick up a new exhaust at a good price, so I've pushed it up the priority list and now have a TurboXS cat-back on the way! Thanks to Troy from PSR!

Should be on in the next few weeks once it arrives!... NOISE! But doubtful I will make this months cruise at this stage! :|

OK... Time for a small update... Exhaust has been put on hold for a bit(something about TurboXS having a 5 month wait to supply a muffler)... So sticking with the stock one just for now as I've paid a deposit on a set of rims...

They are coming over from the US, so will be a couple of months or so before they get here, but I think they'll be worth the wait! :)

I ended up getting Varrstoen 3.3.2's in a 19 x 10.5" +22 (in black). They are a CE28 copy wheel when it comes down to it, but I've heard lots of good things and they are a fraction of the price of a genuine set of Volks!
Anyway, I am planning on running a 265/30R19 tyre I think... but I have plenty of time to decide before the wheels get here! ;)

This is the wheel:

OK... quick update...

Wheels arrived today... awesome... Varrstoen 3.3.2 19x10.5" +22 in black! Tyres are on the way and are Yokohama S Drive 265/30R19... also in black! ;)

The stock tyres lasted just over 25,000kms before the front left started delaminating at the beginning of the week(helped by the large amount of camber I'm currently running due to coilovers being fitted), which was extremely inconvenient with just over a week to wait for the new set to arrive, so I have picked up a set of barely used Hankook Ventus RS3 which are now on the car, and boy are they impressive! Very nice and much better than the stock Dunlops in just about every way! Although I doubt they will last long if I keep driving on them every day! ;)

Anyway... The tyres should be here next week, so the Enkei's + Hankook's will become track wheels/tyres and we should be rocking! :)

So... pics...

Well... Small, annoying update... Tyres came in on Thursday last week and dropped them down the road to get fitted to the wheels today!

I thought that a 265 was going to be a wide enough tyre for a tyre shop to be able to manage to fit them onto the 10.5" rim, but apparently not as they have damaged one of the tyres to the point of it being unusable... So yeah... They are covering the replacement cost(as you would expect) but it means another 10 day wait until I can get another one over from the US.

Sigh... But, life goes on! :|

mitcho
31-10-2011, 05:39 PM

Jimmy_S
01-11-2011, 12:24 AM

01-11-2011, 07:59 AM

Jimmy_S
01-11-2011, 09:24 AM
Completely agree Tyson!... And they are paying for the replacement so they seem to be doing the right thing!

Those rims look very mint, I was thinking of going a similar style in black and changing my suspension set up, however It means I have to void warranty. Are you not worried about voiding warranty with all the work you're doing?

Jimmy_S
01-11-2011, 10:21 AM
Hahah... ahh... New Car Warranty... Scaring people off from modifying their near new cars since 1991...

Warranty will be fine provided the modifications I do don't directly cause the failure of the original part. If I change my wheels and then my motor gives up, there is no way Mitsubishi can turn around and say that the warranty is void as I've changed the wheels...

Bigger wheels changes drive ratio -> more load on the engine outside factory specs-> dead motor. -> claim denied, pay up.

If they try hard enough they could deny it.

Exactly, but point Jimmy is making is mods won't void his warrantee, when they could.

Do what you said and return to stock for any claim, it's the safest bet.

mod, i've had all sorts fixed under warrantee, also got told to fuck off and had it cancelled. It goes both ways.

Jimmy_S
01-11-2011, 02:37 PM
It helps when you work for the dealership involved I guess... but I've never had any issues in the past with plenty modded cars... And provided the modification wasn't directly responsible for the failure, they've always been very good.

It's actually improved the clearance at the front, as it doesn't tilt down with the raised rear end, and as it turns out, it definitely needed the alignment! Pulled the camber back to -1.5 degrees on the front which was running over -3 degrees, but still no rubbing!

Very happy, the car is smoother and a couple of squeaks and rattles appear to have disappeared! Which is kind of amazing, but definitely not complaining! :)

Small update: pulled off the front bumper today and fitted a jap spec centre-bezel and also an Ultrex lip which Rob gave me to test fit!... I'm undecided on the lip, but I love no more holes in the middle! :)

I also fitted the Ralliart copy tails a couple of weeks back, but haven't got any photos of them yet...

Purely from an airflow p.o.v surely the Aussie front is better?

Im not overly convinced by the look atm - but I need sleep so I can assess again.

Jimmy_S
27-01-2012, 12:21 AM
Nah TJ... only difference between ADM and JDM part is the holes in the ADM part for the plate mount which sits in the middle of the bumper. The JDM just doesn't have the 3 holes. See ADM here:

Tris, I thought we were already dating?

The jdm bezel was only ~$190 and looks heaps better IMO, well worth it, although plugs will probably be better than having the holes there.

bezel with no holes = win

IMO front lip is too fat/chunky. May blend a bit better if it was body colour

I agree, looks a bit out of place as is as its a chunky lip as opposed to some others which are quite small

Lose the lip - Needs a more subtle one and more carbon!

Jimmy_S
27-01-2012, 12:19 PM
Yeah, I think I'm going to try and find something a bit more subtle..

Negative on more carbon... As much as I would like to, none of it will match my roof, so no deal!..

Looks good with the lip just black, would look even bettwe with some black bolt on side skirts (Nothing to big or hectic, just something to follow the lines of the lip). It would have that oldschool wrx look!

The parking situation there sucks big time... but they don't let us park on our yard as there is only 6 bays or something, so I'm stuck out on the verge there!

Long time, no update... Thought it might be about time!

Not much has happened with the X, I've taken the lip off for the time being.. Fitted some Ferodo DS2500 front and rear pads.. But that is about it!

Thankfully, Tokyo MotorSport have recently got their dyno-room back up and running, so I am booked in for next Tuesday to have upper cooler pipes and wastegate actuator fitted plus a retune!

Hoping to finally crack that magic 300hp at the hubs... but other than that, I'm looking forward to a bit more torque and usable go through the rev range!

Bring on Tuesday!!

Your car will make 300+ ATH easy Jimmy, mine went 290 odd with a cat-back and drop in HKS air filter.

I changed my exhaust since then and added a upper IC pipe so I'll need to get a retune soon.

Nickevox

Jimmy, let me know how those brakes go.. in terms of the amount of dust they emitt and the stopping power.

Im getting a bit sick and tired with the amount of dust my stock ones emitt, coming up to winter I dont want to wash my car everyday because of all the dust around.

Jimmy_S
10-04-2012, 10:04 AM
Car is at TMS now... I'm confident it should make 300+ at the hubs, but not getting ahead of myself as I rarely seem to pull bigger numbers than expected from my cars! ;)

Nicko - Ferodo's are good, big step up in stopage, and MUCH less dust... They do squeak/squeal occasionally, but it seems to be less often now, and not too much to deal with.
TMS are doing deals on Project Mu pads as well, which are also pretty good, and I would consider them next time..?

Hanging out for 5pm! :D

Hahah!... Picked the car up tonight! Very happy with the result so big thanks to Jamie and the boys at TMS!

Numbers for those playing at home = 321Hp & 440Nm @ hubs

Result = hang on... Bulk torque and so much response!... <3

How do the flappy paddle boxes go with heat and extra power causeing limp mode?

Jimmy_S
11-04-2012, 09:24 AM
Haven't had any issues Tyson!? The limp mode, I've only heard of being an issue on track days when the gearbox gets really warm!..

Most people just replace the spotlight with the 'delete kit' from japanparts and that increases the airflow to the transmission cooler and usually sorts it out if it's a real issue!?
Otherwise, if that doesn't fix it, you probably need to go for a different box oil?

The Tokyo TMX400 has been running 355hp for 6mths+ now, and as far as I know, has not had any issues..

I've got a track day next Thursday at RAC, so that will be its first test!

mys1

Just curious was all as I know a few people have cooked stock ones and had it start flashing at them (nothing bad, just have to wait for cool down)

Jimmy_S
11-04-2012, 09:46 AM
Yeah, it's certainly a known problem with the SST, but I've only really heard about guys coming across it while on track, and I've certainly not had any issues on the street with mine!

There are, as I mentioned a few options to fix it, but I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it! :)

Brockas
11-04-2012, 09:48 AM
Worst case scenario you'll have to add a transmission cooler. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me considering the ease of a paddle-box.

Nice result mate!

Nice result mate!

Already has one Dude!

It sits behind the left side foglight, which is why putting in the foglight delete kit improves the airflow and therefore cooling!(not to mention the oil cooler sitting behind the drivers side which also gets a boost of fresh air!)

Some nice figures, now I think I have to get some mods on mine.

Im also digging those real tail lights you have.

Jimmy_S
11-04-2012, 10:15 AM
Do it Nik!! Yours should pull slightly more even with the same mods as the manual still gets a little bit more!

If you want a set of taillights, I know of a set that the owner may be willing to sell!? I can ask if you like...

Nickevox
11-04-2012, 10:26 AM
Very tempting it is! Just need an exhaust then I guess tune time.

I would be keen, what is the owner asking for a set?

Jimmy_S
11-04-2012, 11:04 AM
I'll find out mate!

Exhaust, intake, Upper Intercooler Pipes, Wastegate Actuator + tune...

Then you can also add dump pipe, suction pipe kit... and then turbo!?... Still a bit more to get out of it even with essentially stock equipment!

Joe
11-04-2012, 12:22 PM
SPAL fan kit on the stock trans cooler works a treat... that'll sort out any issues!
