A 17-year-old boy, injured in a horror crash in Ballajura last night, has died in hospital.

The boy, who was driving a Toyota Camry, had stopped at the corner of Illawara Crescent and Sloop Rise in Ballajura, when a Mazda utility ploughed into the driver's side of his car about 11.30pm.

Police believe the 23-year-old driver of the utility lost control of the vehicle about 200m up the road before veering onto the verge and hitting the Camry, pushing it into a nearby fence.

Major Crash investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident today, but speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors.

The 17-year-old driver was cut from the wreckage and taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he died today.

Two male passengers, aged 17 and 18, were also taken to RPH to be treated for minor injuries.

The 23-year-old driver of the utility and his 21-year-old passenger were taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Derrick Craster, whose son had just been dropped off at home by his friends in the sedan after going to the movies, was one of the first on the scene.

Mr Craster said he was watching TV in his home when he heard a loud crash nearby.

He said he quickly ran across the road to the crash site and helped the two injured people in the utility vehicle, leaving his white shirt covered in blood.

His wife, a nurse, took care of the young driver trapped in the sedan.

``I just thought I hope they're alright,'' Mr Craster said.

``The crash was loud... there was lots of screaming and shouting.''

Nearby resident Bev Allen said she was watching TV when she heard a loud noise and walked out onto the street to see ``bodies lying there''.

``I thought they were dead,'' she said. ``I just heard an explosion, like a bomb.

``I was scared... I could hear screaming... like swearing and yelling.

``And then I just sort of walked out...

``I just couldn't believe it there was just carnage all over the road.

``I saw the police get a young guy and put him in the car, apparently he was aggressive.''

Ms Allen said people regularly hooned along Illawara Crescent and both houses near the crash site had been slammed into by drunk drivers before.

Sgt Gary Whyatt, from Major Crash, said he believed speed and alcohol were factors.

``It's too early for us to make any judgement in relation to that, we are still in the early stages of investigating this particular crash,'' he said.

``There is an inference that alcohol is involved.''

Sgt Whyatt urged people to take extra care when driving at night.

``There is nothing particularly wrong with this stretch of road if people drive to the conditions and with due care,'' he said.

``It's a case of people being mindful of the way they drive or this can be the outcome.''

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the crash or the crash itself. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Long story short:

He had just got back from the movies and met a couple of other mates at the house to look at their friends' new car. When they were leaving, 3 of them jumped in Luke's car, and the others in a second car behind Luke's. Luke's car was then hit at full force by the ute and propelled into the fence of the house next door.. Which was all seen by the guys in the second car :( He went in for emergency surgery but never woke up.. His life support was turned off at 1PM Yesterday..

I just can't believe how moronic some people can be. That one stupid decision has taken a good mate from us and changed the lives of everyone who knew him.. I hope this makes people think twice before getting in the car after a drink.

The problem is that nobody gives a fuck. It's in their minds when they see it on the news, but the next time they get shitfaced after work they're just gonna take their chances and drive home anyway.

Absolute scum, makes me sick. People are shit enough drivers as it is, even without alcohol involved - but ofcourse they are heroes when they get a few drinks in them.

Nick, who played soccer with him, lives across the road from me. He's pretty cut up about it. Sorry to hear also Grug.

Anyone who drinks shouldn't drive, full stop. IMO either one drink or fifty, just don't risk it.

It actually makes me sick to the stomach to know that even on AL, people are getting done for DUI. I thought car enthusiasts were smater than that but it appears not.

I dont want to turn this into a political type argument, but I am still stunned that you can get done for drink driving, go back to your car, get in it and drive off, yet it will be taken off you for 28 days for much less.

Sorry to hear mate, I hope you and your friends are coping the best you can.

Sorry to hear about your mate, sounds as though he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hopefully if anything positive at all comes out of this some pingpingpingpings will pull their head in and realise the consequences of driving whilst inebriated. theres always going to be plenty of people willing to risk the lives of other road users so they dont have to catch a taxi though :(

Its a downright digrace that it is this way but I have the feeling that until drink driving causes a 20+ death crash it will never be dealt with any harsher...

Have to wait till your sober to pick up the car from side of road... Loosing license for DUI is worse than loosing car for a month... Loosing a loved one regardless of what happened is the worst by far.

RIP.

The service exists:

0413774931 (I saw a flyer for it at the Windsor a while ago) Another option is moderation, know your limits and stick to them. I frequently have one or two and drive home difference is I have a calibrated bretho (same model used at work and same specs as the cops) in my car. If I'm even close (.04+) the car stays where it is, no if's not buts no I'll be rights. This guy will go for manslaughter most likely on top of his DUI charge's and will have to live with the fact he killed a bloke for the rest of his life. For me and for most people I'm sure this is not the price of a taxi fare or whatever is far cheaper than whats he's up for.

Sorry for your loss Grug.

things like this are always going to happen but if we can reduce the amount of lives lost through harsher penalties or even a zero tolerance on alcohol while driving would be a good step forward

870 now attending the memorial cruise. Looks legit in terms of not being a standard RoE cruise so hopefully I will see some antilaggers there. First meet point is now city west car park. People really need to learn that alcohol and driving is a stupid thing to do. Not even having a license either? There is obviously a reason he hasn't passed his Ls. Fail driver+alcohol= A price everybody will feel the mistake for. RIP.

Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere condolences to Lukes family and friends! I personally didn't know Luke, but I have heard nothing but nice things about him. I know there are no words that can help you at this hard time, but, just know that there are heaps of us that have you in our thoughts! RIP Luke.

Luke Beyer was a young 17 year old man who had a heart of gold. Unfortunatley, due to a tragic accident, Lukes life was cut short when he was involved in a car accident, the other driver being under the influence of alcohol.

Running on Empty Car Club will be hosting this event, at the request of some of his close mates. Destinations will be chosen by his friends and family.
Maps will be $5 - All money raised on the night will go towards a gift or funeral costs for the family.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to show their respects; If you would like to bring along a flower please do, as we will be attending the shops near the accident scene as requested by friends of Luke.

Police will be notified of this event.

THIS IS AN ALCOHOL FREE EVENT!

IF YOU ARE ATTENDING THIS MEMORIAL CRUISE, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT IS A *MEMORIAL*. DON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID! BE RESPECTFUL! ANY ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AT ALL! IF YOU CHOOSE TO BE A MUPPET, I WILL HAND YOUR DETAILS TO THE POLICE WITH OUT HESITATION! THERE IS A TIME AND A PLACE AND A MEMORIAL IS FAR FROM IT!

Shits me when people think being a slight bit over is ok too.

the worst bit is that the passenger and driver of the ute both claimed to have no memory of who was driving trying to cover themselves. the police had to use dna from the steering wheel to find out who was driving

the case was adjourned for 4 weeks so he could seek legal advice...

why

Basically this happened

Lots of people at meetpoint in the big carpark on riverside drive I think it is, cops come, search some cars and get the yellow stickers out. One of the cars was carrying the money collected from people which got searched, money was found and seized. Cops were told by numerous people that it was for a charity cruise. Something to do with it had to be a registered fundraising event, otherwise the cops just look at it like youre taking money from people for driving on a public road.

was years ago now, back in carnal days
