Yeah. Don't know any details tho.
Pretty impressed with the bend in the front radius arms and diff, and the drop arm snapped off the steering box......

Wish we knew more about it.

Doubtful it was our dark skinned brethren, looks like a mine site special with the hi-vis and flashing light (could be a rental though). 160 LOL I've never had the nuts to go over 140 in mine it gets the speed wobbles real bad.
So and doesn't appear in Google maps..

my brother sent me these last week as well. i asked him the story on it.
he said "some dude flipped out at work, took the car and was trying to kill himself. was speeding all the way out of port hedland towards south hedland (about 20km's) hit the roundabout at speed. crashed bigtime. people turn up to help and he tries to steal there car as well."
Apparently in a padded room now or not very far off it.

Good effort to hit 160 in that. I've driven a few of the Landy V8 Diesels for work and they struggle to get over 140 (and even that takes a fucking massive run up!)

We had minesite vehicles stolen from site by dark skinned brethren back in the day. Recovered in Gero etc haha

Would have to be a pretty desperate situation to make someone flip out that hard???

He tried fighting the first guy, then he tried stealing some chicks car that had stopped as well, but she had the keys on her, by then the rozzers arrived, the locals were pissed, car had only just gone through the roundabout 2 seconds before as well, apparently it was lucky the cops had arrived or he would have sustained more injuries from the crash :)

Come to think of it we had a few knocked every now and again off when I was in Newman. They nicked a coaster bus once I'd love to know how many they piled in to it.

so is it just me or does that have a roll bar? of all the cars you could attempt vehicular suicide in i dont think a big 4wd that has been modified to save the lives of the occupents in a roll over or heavy collision is the car you should pick. a mid 90's dihatsu would likely be a better option dont you think?
How many of those would you find on a minesite?

seven. just saying, if you were serious about getting the job done there are heaps of things more likely to bump you off than testing the safety standards of roll bars in big 4wds...
Im no doctor, but in a disturbed state of mind, I dont think he was getting online and checking ncap ratings before jumping in for a high speed run into a roundabout.

Pretty big hit, amazing the car didn't go to absolute pieces @ 160km/h too, remained (relatively) intact.

If that's what is left of a cruiser @ 160kph into a wall then I will keep mine for sure (not that I would sell it anyway!). A WRX at that speed would have the engine in the boot!

If he wanted to end it, he should have found himself a nice 33kV line to grab onto rather than the vehicle.
I find it silly though that they fit a roll bar, but don't fit a full cage. You would think they would fit a full cage??

Yeah I know, but the way I look at it is RTio and etc. are big on safety, like absolutely massive on safety shit on site... yet the mine vehicles only have a roll bar. I would have thought a full cage would be minimum spec. Just seems odd really. Guess some things don't change. :)

How many of those would you find on a minesite?
CP Mining has 116 LV's in the fleet on site of which about 1/2 are V8 troopies. We would have about 300 of them onsite when you count the contractors.
Almost all run the rollover bar as Rio & BHP require it as a minimum so Toyota offer it as an option just like flashing lights, high mount lights and whip aerials. I think it survivied alright given the impact. I've seen far worse than that from people hitting cows at half the speed. Glad it wasn't a Sang Yong / Great Wall / Nissan.

Those v8 cruisers pull a car trailer with car at 140 happily. 160 isn't a mean feat.
The roll bars are a crock. There's no actual regs stating what they are to be made of. Or designed to confirm to. Intact I'd say you'll do more damage than good with one as in a decent roll they won't keep the cab shape and probably end up in your head.
Most are also made of what looks like exhaust tube.

In my driving position my head is right next to it, just 4wding you get a mild concussion from smashing scull against it.

they say its because if you have an accident and you need to be cut out it makes it hard to get you with all these bars in the way. However if you had a decent full roll cage you would be safe in a cacoon.
Look at a race car crash at 200kmhr vs on the road. We know which car will have dead occupants

haha i don't trust the wagons at 110 on a windy day let alone quicker, they move around a lot!
very tailhappy on the access roads too :D
i work for rio and all our rental cruisers have the rollbars, the ones that rio owns don't... this isn't a bad thing as they're not the best on leg room.
the prado's and hilux's with the rollbar are annoying as you can't put the backrest down, but then only the rentals have the bars in them too.
i much prefer the cruiser utes, much more stable due to the toolbox's etc on the back i think

there is actualy a pretty strict standard for those "roll bars"
Its called ROPS/FOPS (roll over protection, fall over protection) and is a standard requirement for all vehicles going to mine sites now. Designing ROPS/FOPS systems is getting to be pretty big money these days, and if a dude leapt out of that and proceeded to attempt to punch on, I would say they obviously work.

There is no standard for cars. Machines yes. Cars no.
My old man has spent considerable time ringing everyone from the mines dept to the majors like rio and bhp.
No one has design criteria. Thus they all look like pus abs would do more harm than good.
They're all made of some material. Probably mild steel
Tube about 2.5 inches thick. Are a hoop with no lateral cross bars to stop them folding and are bolted to the floor with 2 bolts a side. And one more each side bolting it to the roof.
That's no a standard. It's like pissing onto a bush fire to put it out.

ROPS/FOPS = Rollover Protection Structure/Falling Object Protection Structure.
OEM units comply with standards relevant for country of manufacture. Last time I check the mines reg (a while ago admittedly) it stated something along the lines of "structures are to be designed and manufactured to provide sufficient strength to prevent significant deformation to operator cabin/passenger occupancy areas"
Cat design there ROPS/FOPS to support the equipment weight+ dynamic loading in a roll over/falling object event. They are marked with standards and machine max weights
the roll over bars fitted to mine spec vehicle are pieces of exhaust tube painted black are a hazard in themselves. (Anybody with size 12 or above boots tried to quickly exit a hilux dual cab with a bar in it??? good lock getting your boots past the bars)
ASAIK there is no AS for rops/fops (could be wrong tho) its a site/company specific item

All i know is we get a few mine vehicles through work, granted they are usually written off but the roll over bar definetly appears to of helped in the accident.
We have even had big coaster bus' come thru and they have the roll over bar at the front above the driver. Have seen one of these roll over bars fitted to a 200 series cruiser that belonged to one of the mining company top dogs.

Most of the 200 Series and new Prado's have side airbags so the bar may interfere with the bags. Plus sticking a bar in a 100k+ 4WD that never leaves the car park is just a waste of time. :P
