EXHAUST QUESTION!

I have a twin 2.5" exhaust from headers to bumper on the Calais

After the diff the two pipes enter a twin-in-twin-out straight through muffler. Its extremely loud and i personally LOVE IT

However, been on a few long trips with the Mrs and mates and they keep whinging and moaning about getting headaches. Planning on going to Albany, Kalgoorlie & Shark Bay this year also.

Can i replace the rear muffler only with the shitest, more restrictive and noise reducing muffler. Ill get flanges welded on so i can swap them when i want.

Will it reduce noise significantly? Or just take the edge off?

Any advice?

This is what i did in my car. Except i got a very good twin in twin out so i didnt loose any performance. Previously I had no rear muffler just straight pipes. I did get it flanged however so for track days i can run the straight pipes.

Cheers mate, ive heard a few success stories in relation to V8's. Mine being a V6 however, it has a fairly deep drone that will be hard to remove. Performance isnt an issue, id rather have one quiet option and then my loud option.

EDIT: Not keen on that varex muffler, prefer getting under the car.

Buy them ear muffs.

The drone penetrates muffs ;)

Thats how loud mine was, then i put my cam in and it was bullshit loud. I didnt want a yellow nor the looks i was getting in the work car park so got a flanged muffler put in.

The difference is massive.

I've worked at Carline Mufflers before and safe to say exhaust sounds loud and shit because it's on a V6, exhausts on a V8 is quiet at cruisy but when you give it some it makes the roar while V6's are just have the constant flappy shitty sound. Just like a canon on a N/A Skyline or Silvia, constant flappy shitty sound compared to the turbo models.

Best to just chuck the muffler back on and restrictors to quieten it down a tad.

Each to there own, i like the sound of it.

Will changing the rear muffler from a twin straight through to either a twin baffled or single baffled reduce the noise significantly?

Mad_Aussie - Nah ill just end up putting it into a tree when boost comes on. Blower is fine for the time being.

Lukey rear turbo resonator, or turbo intermediate muffler shuts up ecotec drone :) Did a fuck load of research so I know what to get when my new engine goes into my Berlina, you'll never make it sound great, but you can make it not sound like poo.

Magnaflow do an okay rear resonator also, but they are fairly large dollars for something you'll have sitting in your shed alot I'd say.

Get a Varex. I have one, best thing over with wireless remote control. Startup and cool down at home doesn't wake anyone up ;)

Lasoya - Thanks mate, but that is what is currently on the car now. Need fairly restrictive muffler i think.

rucker_ - Fair question, im on a very good wicket!

bangn - Fair point.

31-EVO - Thanks for the info mate, ill speak to the guys doing my exhaust and ask some specific questions about those options you mentioned.

DJunior - I have been a huge sceptic on these Varex mufflers and hadn’t ever seen one on a super6. Until Saturday nights cruise lol. Funny how that happens. There was a guy with a whippled super6 with twin 3" exhaust, he had two varex mufflers either side at the rear of his statesman. When open i couldn’t open my window next to him on the cruise. As soon as we hit the city he closed them and it sounded like a whiney vacuum cleaner.

If asked a question in the varex thread, see what response it gets.

All my old resonators turned to shit and blew out as they older and became louder, this resonator ive got is 1 made by Manta and made a big difference old my old clubby setup which was very loud

look at magnaflow mufflers.
they arent cheap, but you can get decent muffling with minimal power loss.

my 33 exhaust didn't drone, was legal volume with a nice throaty sound and didn't lose any power over the previous system.

Hi Mate,

We can put in a rear baffled muffler for you to quiet it down. We can flange it all so that you can RnR yourself whenver you feel.
