Hey pingpingpingpings,
Olds are building a new house, and the old man is keen on a 3D TV for the home threatre, and wants surround sound but have no power points for rear speakers.
Anybody work for a home theatre/audio mob? House nearly finished (will be finished in around 4-6 weeks).

you won't need power for rear speakers....unless you place a sub back there somewhere or if you purchase 'powered' speakers - the amp will provide the power, you just have to run speaker cables too it
investigate roof mounts for the rear surround...nice little path i might tread myself once the build is done

If you're going all out on a home theatre, an extra power point is nothing.

Nice greeting, geez!
Hahaha.
You can pickup decent stezza's for less than $1k, even cheaper if you packaged it with a 3D TV. I personally wouldnt buy a 3D TV yet. No reason just my feeling.

I got a 3D TV at Christmas, cost me just under 3K for a 55" LED. Honestly I could have waited a bit longer coz there isn't much out there in 3D yet, mostly cartoons and a handful of actual movies and nature docos. Having said that if you're gonna buy a tv and keep it for 5 years, might as well get a 3D now, surely 12 more months and there should be heaps more content available.
Oh, GT5 (and few other PS3 games) is in 3D, I seem to use that for it the most.

Isn't anywhere for a power point to go, tv area is next to the living area in an open plan living area.. no backing wall to the couches and the back speakers.
Probably looking at 5kish for the system, tv + surround sound, would prefer quality kit.

5K for TV and sound system would be quite hard to get quality imo. You're really only left with about 2K for the sound system after the TV. A half decent amp will set you back around 1K. You'd need to spend about a couple of K's on decent speakers too... then again worth asking for some package deal.

Have the walls been plastered yet?
If not get a wall cutting mob to put some conduit down the wall where you think you will need speakers.
Will cost you about 30 dollars a cut and just smash some conduit and a wall plate on the bottom.

PS3 + $6 HDMI
no jokes, ps3 is consistently rated as one of the best BR players. Also it is always being updated, didn't need new hardware when 3D came out, just an update.
also has optical out for sound, SD upscaling

If its a cavity wall in a single story house you'd be ok to run speaker cable down the cavity for the front speakers. If you have no back wall might have to mount the speakers on the roof, or you'd see the cables.

Double story no cavity (99% sure on no cavity), hence the problem

Not sure if it's exactly the same is in my house... my TV is against a single brick internal wall. I cut a vertical groove in the brickwork all the way up to the ceiling, wide and deep enough to fit a small pipe through which I can run my speaker cables in all the way into the ceiling cavity, sealed it up and painted over it, and I placed a plate with speaker connections in there. At the rear, the cables come down through the ceiling into the rear speakers mounted up there. My house is single storey though, not sure how that can work in double storey... perhaps ou can cut into the bottom of the slab and do the same thing like with the wall?

LG is one of the worst panels you can buy.
anyone wanting actual quality scoffs at muteki system.
For the coin you're spending, you are best off having a consultant who doesn't work for a store that push certain ranges offering a custom system for the room, then having it professionally installed. All of this I can help you with if you wish to PM. Been in the industry for 7 years.
Install wise, it really depends on the way it is built as to what would work and also what sort of viewing and listening you do.. if all you watch is live concerts, you'll be suited to something with horsepower, if it's more movies with shorts bursts of loudness, a sub & satellite system is probably the go..
it's a shame it's so late on in the building as it probably limits options, but if you spend the $ in the right areas, you'll still end up with something very reasonable.

Muteki would be a no go unless you like flashing lights and average sound?
New panels coming through have dropped in price and now 3d is not the main feature, it's smart tv. So can get something decent for quite cheap. Audio wise ricecracker nailed it on the head. Just go to a few shops get some demo's, see what you like and let them know the room you have.

get ur old man to try some 3d tvs before he drops coin on one.
My mates parents replaced their projector screen with a 60" 3d tv and he reckons when watchin a 3d movies or program with the glasses on he could see the light out the corner of his eye flickering due to the way the glasses work and after about 10min gave him a headache.
So unless your olds have a completly blacked out room with no other light apart from the screen when they are watchin 3d's programs this may be an issue. My mate tried closing of all exterior light except the downlights that were dimmed right down and these were still causing a problem.

Bose is another brand to stay away from.
For 1500 bucks your parents are better off buying a nice pair of bookshelf speakers and forgetting about surround.
Unless of course they really are not intrested in sound quality. If thsts the case pretty much any home theater in a box system will work fine.

How much you want to spend? Audio wise if you want primo at a good price Talk to Wyn Tatham or Piere Wigger at Simply Hifi in Subiaco. Both family friends and will do a good price. And of high Quality.

One of the audiophiles on here probably knows what these are, I couldn't even see a name on them.. Big towers with individual amps at the front and another rack off to the side with another amp, dvd, fox, etc etc etc..
The sound of out these things is insanely good, but you certainly pay for it.
How much do u wanna spend and do u want it installed?

So the minister for finance and fun cracked the shits at the idea of spending 5k for a surround sound system, so now we're stuck at around 3k for a 60-72inch tv and speakers, which sucks balls. Just looking for good sound quality and a decent TV, he wants 3d but no idea if its in the price range.
Was looking at using wireless speakers, but as the rear speakers have no power points close, it rules that out. Can't really run cables from the tv/amp as its all open plan living on tiles.
Ideas?

If rear speakers are an issue then just spend the extra coin on a decent set of front speakers.
I have 5.1 in my living room (Yamaha amp and Eltax speakers) and 90% of the time the rear speakers and sub are not being used so unless i'm watchin a DVD or playing the Xbox then only the center front speaker is being used.

3k for 60+ inch is about the going rate for a good panel.
Pretty much leaves nothing left for any audio.
Cant recommend anything for that kind of budget without going second hand (old man probably not interested in sec hand i assume?). Maybe hang out for samsung/LG/Sony promo, they often bundle a TV and a home theater in a box together for no extra cost.

thought I wouldn't bother starting another thread:
what do people use for curtains? I was thinking of using a thin layer to let light in when required, and having something thicker when it's closed up.
thoughts?

Tried finding a topic to suit my questions but this will do.
Currently I have an antenna plug on one side of my living area. I will be purchasing a new tv that has built in wifi.
Basically all I want to do is have only the power point mounted behind the tv and no other cables to the tv.
What devices are available to plug into my antenna port and then wifi stream the signal to the tv. Or is there a multi purpose media centre that has antenna input.
Closest thing I found was an android tv box but it then said connect it via hdmi cable

So you want a receiver that uses wifi instead of cables for AV out? Not sure such thing exists? Streaming blu rays over wifi wouldn't be up to task I thought. Can't run cables through wall?

A quick search came up with the response "you can't afford that". I think you'll find that the wifi is for internet only and wont be an option like HDMI1/HDMI2/RGB etc when choosing a source.
You can get a transmitter but that means you have to tuck up the box for the receiving end behind the TV. Something like this http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/iogear-wireless-5x2-hd-matrix/

Nothing beats running cables thru the wall with quality cables, interconnects and fittings. For some reason, I dont trust the wireless steaming of media, too many possible interference going on.
