Just got a quote from ARB for my Bundera, $3,900 odd dollars for front and rear lockers with air compressor, fitted etc.
6 week wait
1 week to install.

anyone know where/how/if you can get cheaper price, as dont really feel like paying 4k.

cheaper option?

opinions?

Why do you want air lockers? just get auto lockers!!

Everyone whinges about auto lockers till they actually try them.

part-time front + lokka will save bulk coin

Import ARB from states and take to diff shop

pocket the 1.5-2k in savings

bundera got the same centers as a hilux so you could have two auto lockers one from fr and one for rear for undr 1k then all you have to do is fit them. and its not that hard

short and light its going to bunny hop around town with a rear lokka, not an issue for some can be a pain for others...

Easy to fit if you have an open centre, if currently LSD then I would get the pros to install the open centre properly.

was going the air locker so road driving wasnt an issue, dont really want to be tearing chunks out of $1,000 worth of muddies..

coastal 4x4 can do it for $3,800 with a 1 day wait.
seems a little better then ARB.
still big $ though.

If they are same diffs as a lux why not get a SR5 LSD rear and a Ezi Lokka front for $400 and fit it urself.
That's the plan in my patrol gonna shim the stock diff up and Ezi Lokka front.
Will have no trouble goin 90% of places around Perth

or you could look at the eaton e-lockers, air lockers are overrated. i have an e locker and its awesome. but definately go auto rear, i have and it hasnt really torn my tyres up at all.

I have autos front and back but they are a bit differnt to the spartan / lockrite ones ive got a lockrite with synchro rings basically in the rear to make it a little less aggresive because ive got a ute. Front has a yukon grizzly so its like a detroit. No weight in the rear means sometimes its noisy but my bro had them in his 4runner and with that bit extra weight over the back wheels no problems at all.

Ive also got a bit of hp so an air locker would mean id toast one wheel everywhere i went unlocked.

Mr Mike has a good idea too.

Lsd rear (even though toyota ones suck) if u shim it up a bit it might live a little while and an auto locker in the front. Cheap and it works really well and you dont know the difference 99% of the time on the road. Seriously tho front auto locker, trailgear/track assasin cv's and lsd rear and you will be home and hosed for under $1500!! It will get you so far you will wonder how you did it without it.

Failing a dodgy 5k kms only Toyota LSD, you can pull your handbrake up a notch or two and it will help you crawl out, sometimes...

It's more of a challenge to drive unlocked anyway, 90% of the time offroad I'm running RWD only with a sloppy LSD.

lol toyota landcruiser handbrakes are no better either.

running rwd with a sloppy lsd? thats what destroys tracks and gets them closed.
Also just punishing your vehicle for no reason you have 4wd use it.

Handbrake is perfect if you have it setup properly. I can hold my 3.5t+ truck on a hill in neutral without issue, do I, no...

No its clowns that do circle work, drive through mud pits full tilt and don't know when to stop and reacess that gets tracks closed. If I need 4WD to climb something I will use it, if I don't then it doesnt harm the track or the truck. Its an 80 Series, not a weak as piss plastic fantastic 4by that needs 4WD to get up a curb.

i heard about this handbrake method for the first time last night, how well does it work?

South

In the NJ/L Pajero it is just like traction control, helps the factory LSD work more like a locker.

Patrol's have a good LSD, last a long time and work well, which is why lots of people get a front locker first and the handbrake trick doesnt really get used.

I've tried it once in the 80 to no affect, mind you I didn't realise untill I got out that I was a) sitting on the diff and b) forgot to engage the centre diff lock (spooled centre diff, no drive to front unless engaged), which goes back a few posts to me driving RWD most the time and simply forgot... I got pretty far up the hill though :)

Didn't try it in the Pajero has it had factory rear locker fitted.

i couldnt agree more about morons hookin nuts etc closing tracks. but with 4wd engaged you will do less damage again. after all that is why its called a 4x4 isnt it? why trash your car tying to get it up in 2wd when you can just piss up it in 4wd is beyond me.

mr_mike

couldnt agree more, why rev the fuck out of ur rig spinning the back wheels chopping out tracks when u could very easily lock in the front hubs and just motor along with ease.

South
14-04-2011, 07:10 PM
I agree with not trashing car, you'd be hard pressed to find someone more precious about his truck, but driving it in RWD most the time won't damage the track or the truck if your smart...

You could eat off my undercarriage but I'm not afraid to cover it in mud, it will just get detailed as soon as it gets home.

If you do the right work on an LC handbrake it will have no issues, used to adjust ours all the time, as soon as the rear flexed it was shot. Now its been good for 12 months...

see if you can find someone selling a older model locker, since they change the fittings about a year ago and i know of a few people that have had problems with them and had to take them back

air lockers = awesome
personally I think its like playing a computer game and having cheats on like all guns and ammo flick a switch and its like cheating to crawl up most hills either way well worth the wait and money
Have you looked on the net else where, see if you can buy the parts and get another shop to fit it cheaper?

yes!

in my patrol i have a front air locker and have skimmed the rear lsd so its a lot tighter. the front locker only ever gets used as a last last resort, using lockers all the time ruins the fun of 4wding! learn to pick your lines etc first.

You might be able to save a couple hundred $$ if you can find a locker in the US, I know ARB's for jeeps are cheaper in the states than here even though its an aussie product.

+1 for 4wd systems lokkas, not used off road but i run 1 in my vn and Justin runs 1 in [ASTRO6] they have both taken plenty of abuse and ran a 10.9@122 in astro6

I smashed a Richmond auto locker in the front of my Surf myself, all up less than $400 exercise. That combined with a semi-worn out rear LSD works a treat.

speakin to the diesel mech that subs at my work he has a auto locker front and factory LSD in rear of his hilux and he reckons he loves it never has a problem and puts heaps of other rigs to shame.

Also told me it took him about 20min to fit his front lokka diff, this doesnt include removing the diff center from his truck.
For $499 u would be wanting do be doing some serious offroad/comp work to justify spending the $700+ extra on a ARB locker.
