Hey,
Got bored so thought i put up a topic about my track hack build.
About year ago was looking for a rolling shell gtr for track build, i came across an r32 gtr (complete and running( which was for sale, long story short went and had alook at it and feel in love again with another skyline, bought it.
I decided before throwing alot of money and time at the car i would think out the build properly and build it once with the right parts first time.
So This is what it look like when i first bought it (minus the advan wheel, had just stock gtr rims but had the advan wheels from my previous track car so smash them on)
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/2739/img6098a.jpg
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR43X-IBII/AAAAAAAAADs/UTutFjWqSmA/s912/IMG_6102.JPG
Base:
1990 BNR32 GTR 107,000km
Engine Swap which has done 50,000km (r33 gtr engine)
R33 N1 Turbos
Bosch 044 Fuel Pump
ARC Airbox
HKS Hipower Cat-back exhaust + decat pipe
bleed value
No aircon
Hicas has been remove
Advan 17x9.5 +19 with 235/45/17 RE001 rubber
Bee-r suspension (looks to be just bee-r shocks with std spring however the car is pretty stiff but ride high looks std)
Parts which i will be using from my previous track car
AP Racing CP5500 Front Calipers (4pot)
Endless slotted 323 disc (32mm thick)
Endless cc-rg pads (front and rear)
APP Braided brake lines
Bride Zeta 3 seat
Nismo Steering Wheel
Objective of the build:
My plan is to build a 55 second track car for barbagallo Short Track, And regularly enter speed event series and any time base track days.
Now 55second is extremely quick and i have no illusion that it will take alot of time, effort and money to reach that but that is the end goal, for now i just want the car to be reliable and running constant time so i can learn how to drive the car quick.
Stage 1:
I wanted to get a base time at barbagallo so i knew what i was working with. So i install a tomei boost gauge (old skool) and set the boost to 1bar running the std ecu. However before i hit the track i wanted to get better tyres and some better suspension because the bee-r were very average and some better street tyres.
So after some long searching on yahoo auction i came across a set of Quantum T5-RS Coilovers with swift springs unknown spring rates. Send a few emails off to swift USA and found out the spring rates where 10/8 which i was more than happy to use so bought them
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR5XPUBNZI/AAAAAAAAADw/i9Aa6kpKu3Y/m_h_8181-img600x450-1282760706opaqbf7621.jpg
Next buy was a set of new rims, as i plan to keep the advan rims for semi slick (however i later sold them)
Set of NISMO LM-GT4 17x9.5 +12 were order and i jump onto tirerack and bought a set of Advan AD08 255/40/R17 for 1.2k shipped
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR5X-R4rLI/AAAAAAAAAD8/Q-hc13vaz6g/mokamayu1124-img600x450-1285754626ctvzrr70988.jpg
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7259/img6287z.jpg
Sent the car off to WA-Suspension to have the coilover adjusted and wheel alignment done
Now it was time for some track action, so took the car to nolimits to get a base time.
Best time of the night was 58.6819 second, with the car constantly running in the 58/59 second which i was very happy with. The only issue i had was the lag from the N1 turbo, full boost was 4500rpm+

Stage 2: Power Build
Now i didn't want to go crazy power as i had no plan to rebuild the engine so my power goal was 350-450hp and i could easily achieve this using the current n1 turbo bought i wasn't happy with the amount of lag they had so went and got myself a set of HKS GT-SS off yahoo auction, unfortunately when they arrviced and i pulled of the HKS dump pipes i found there to be aheap of oil in the rear housing, so rather than risk installing them i headed off to Per4maz and got them rebuild, the housing were undamaged so just need new bearing pack and it was all good to go!
Next was the ecu Power Fc D-jetro with apexi maf senors
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8206/dsc00057cm.jpg
also purchases a set of hks afm-less pipes
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/8048/dsc00086rr.jpg
For boost controller i went with the blitz sbc id-3 as i ran one in my other track car and was very happy with it
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaSBnwIXZSI/AAAAAAAAAFE/wIOu5CN0pqM/okarutocar-img600x338-128378054020100906224220.jpg
I had original bought a HKS piping kit (turbo side), however wasn't overly impressive by the finish and layout of the pipes (also the kit would not fit with my ARC airbox) so sold it off and went and bought a complete Greddy Piping kit
HKS KIT
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR_yPMXfzI/AAAAAAAAAEI/W47yxWRVUAQ/impacy_2th-img600x450-1282994926esqhml22820.jpg

Greddy Kit

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaSAKzBFqLI/AAAAAAAAAEs/p7H4sVlyi4g/221101b06.jpg
And to go with the turbo side piping kit i bought HKS intercooler piping kit
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs714.snc4/63475_481123908575_691388575_6087383_5487935_n.jpg
Next buy was complete impulse buy which wasn't needed but the price was to good to pass up, ARC Radiator
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR_yE6estI/AAAAAAAAAEM/aHLfWOhskbo/jg3dci2000-img600x402-1284797891jqnjbj54388.jpg
After doing some research on the exhaust side of things, i started looking for some tomei old style dump pipe as they are the largest of the bell mouth design pipes for the gtr, came across a fellow antilag member selling them so i snap them up asap!
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/594/dsc00077xtd.jpg
Next was the front pipe which i bought a HKS racing front pipe as it was 70x2 into 80mm (again the largest off the shelf available for the gtr with the flex pipe in it)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaSBihHrk-I/AAAAAAAAAFA/BoyPENANw6c/grabnr32-img600x337-1281868681fiaonk60310.jpg
Stage 3: Installing and tuning
Having done all the work on my previous track car (gtst), i went about install all the parts myself, did some reading up on changing the turbos on the gtr, bought some good tools (big thanks to 4SLIDE for hooking me up with some great deals), and had a crack it at.
I soon found out it was not going to be so easy as i first through but i continue doing it and finally got it all installed and sorted
END RESULTS
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/844/img6343l.jpg
Also at the same time i reinstall the aircon gear, as the car would be driven to the track and seeing as the car still had all the aircon gear under the dash it was a easy install.
So sent i off to Hyperdrive to get tune. Result was 370rwhp @ 18psi with injector close to maxing out (90% duty cycle). The injector were a set of nismo 600cc however they were taken from my previous track car so they had taken a beating and i guess needed a clean.
Stage 4: Return to the Track
Now to see if the power gain would make an improvement on my lap time, so off i went to another no limits event.
And what a BIG FAIL that night was, i manger i total of one lap 59.7 second in which the car developed a major missfire. So i jump off the track straight away and went looking for the problem my first through was coilpack, as i they were standard.
I starting pulling off each coil pack plug one at a time and found it was number 6 that was the problem, after having a quick chat to gav he suggest that i try and tape up the coil, to see if that help. So got the tape up but it made no difference :(
So it was along drive home on 5 cylinders and the car sounding like a wrx.
The next day i went about trying to fix the problem, so i bought a set of working uses coilpacks and had a spare r32 coil pack harness and swap them over which made no difference, So next step was spark plugs.
So i pulled the plugs out and found them to be the wrong model (r34 plugs which are shorted than r33 plugs) so off to autopro for a new set of plugs and the missfire was finally gone :)

Stage 5: Suspension Work
I then decided it was time to sort out the suspension some work, as the rear had massive amounts of camber and the front was only running -1degrees.
1st set was a set of swaybars, ARC, i found a front one very quickly on yahoo auction so snap it up
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8109/bnryyr1200img600x449128.jpg
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/8109/bnryyr1200img600x449128.jpg
However i could not find a rear one, and was left with the only option to buy one brand new which was something like 50,000yen, so i left that and just keep looking for a second hand one. Then ARC when bankrupt and i was left with the chance i could never buy one brand new if i didn't get one asap then all the sudden a second hand one can up on yahoo so i snap it up ASAP!
Next for the front suspension arms, i had only one choice if i wanted to get the amount of camber i was looking for ikeya formula But i would be looking at over 5k! for a complete set front and rear :(
After some late night searching on yahoo i came across a second hand Nismo Circuit Link Set and upper arm for a price to good to past up!
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4282/600x4502011020800058.jpg
So that is it for now, i am waiting for the nismo parts to arrive and then i will put them on with the swaybar and go for a wheel alignment, then hit the track and see what time i can get.
I would also like to get the injectors remove and tested and clean then maybe a retune for more boost. Also need to buy an H/C for the pfc as the one which came with mine is the wrong model
also bought a defi 3 din gauge and have since installed it but only have the water temp connect will wait till i purchase an oil cooler then install the oil sensors
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_iPo-l9tDwBw/TaR_zRzwHwI/AAAAAAAAAEk/nWlKhAH9YWo/kamiiwata1216-img600x450-1289222081si8xf247273.jpg

Still looking for a cage, i found a second hand cusco one for $600 shipped. And also been incontact with a guy on sau who makes CAMS approve cages, however the price is upwards of $1200 for a half cage depending what i want, if i go for full X beams and harness bar im looking $1650
The cage im still debating if i should do it or not... if i go the cage it means completely stripping the rear and removing all the sound deadening

Picture was taken just before i sent it in for a tune, had hyperdrive install the maf senors in the plenum, so was running std ecu and afm to drive it to the workshop, will get an update photo on the engine bay

Not sure as i did the turbo swap at the same time, however intake sound is alot louder with the greddy kit compare to the arc + stock pipes
And thanks everyone for your comments :)

Nice build up!
Will have to have a look next Thursday night if I can bring myself to head up to Nolimits without actually entering....
All these track builds of late really make me want to get real serious with mine.
Very nice build mate.
Looks like its going to be a fairly capable track hack.
+1 on the ARC sways. got them in the sil .. quality sturdy bars!
** on another note, the ARC that made the sway bars ( auto refine company ) are not the same brand as ARC international ( abbey road company ) which produced all the quality radiators and intercoolers etc.
So with ARC int going bankrupt, that wouldn't of affected your search for a rear bar =P
will be watching for updates!

Will not be at no limits for awhile as i am taking a trip overseas for afew months. Really keen to get back out their and see if i can get into the 56/57 with the new power mods.
On a side note, while on holiday looks like i may be able to do a track day in Italy at Monza :D Just waiting for reply on available times and total cost.
Monza + Ferrari Challenge (F430) = DREAM! dont know if i would ever be able to look at my gtr the same but i have to do it!

Also found some interesting gear for sale on yahoo auction (will send me broke for sure)
Carbonfiber tail shaft

http://img363.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/2/2/3/5/r32skylinegtv-img450x600-1302613467muhbf611467.jpg
That would be more wanky than anything else i think
But this has got me thinking ARC twin entry core + piping kit

Very rare kit only problem is the cooler is 105mm which is just way to big and i know i will have heat soak issue on the track, everything i have read and been told is that 70mm is fine for the track under 500hp anything bigger will hurt cooling to the radiator. Real shame as the kit is soooo nice!

I had a ACPT carbon shaft on my previous car, it actually made a shit-load difference in gear change and how quick it revved out.

16-04-2011, 10:32 AM
yeh z tunes run CF tail shafts. So did the legendary Mines 34. Helps with rotational mass i.e. faster response.
If you weren't tracking it, it would be wanky, but probably actually a good mod for lap times
Kaido
16-04-2011, 10:47 AM
Cd tail shaft has gain but is not really needed hence wanky mod lol.
I have heard alot of gtr guys having Issue with unbalance cf shaft. See what the bids take it to

That was from a group buy from ACPT that was riddled with problems (construction, length, balancing, time delays etc).

to be fair simon, if you are pushing a car to it's limits, there is always the chance of an incident...
in saying that, you could counter with replacing "car" with "driver" .. but yeah the guy is tracking his car hard and had a sizeable off, it happens, he shouldnt be hacked for getting out there and giving it a decent go.

happen about a year ago! over excited driver trying to push for quicker laps time. Wasn't paying attention to the car and what it was telling me (had done 6-7laps of the long track) tyres were gone and the car was sliding. but i keep pushing it.
lost it on the last turn (came in with way to much speed), hit the kerbs spun the car into the tyre wall.. rest is history

+1. That's how majority of the guys racing v8 supertaxis and f1/f3 etc started off, climbing up the ranks as you go. There's a few AL guys who have purchased karts if I'm not mistaken?

Yeeeeewwww.... thats harsh...
Saying that.. you almost lost your r32 on the main straight and head up straight up to the beach ;) @ Cat Corner
good thing was that the sands stop you before you kissed the wall..
I had my car under control the whole time, that's the difference.
It was an example, I didn't have any photos of the crashes on cruises handy :)

So after less than 6months of rebuilding my HKS GT-SS
Turbo Number One; will need to come out again for another rebuild

The cause of this, my second hand greddy filters, the inside plastic bits broke off and bye bye turbo wheel !!!!
Very pissed off atm, was away for 3months, come back start the car took for short 5min drive and this was the end result! I'm hoping that only the wheel is damage, and the bearings are ok.
So now what to do....? Both turbo will have to come out (the joy of the gtr twin setup) Maybe it is time to cut my losses and go single.... for the same power i should be able to get less lag with a single.
Real shame never got to run this setup at the track...
wow that sux epic dick! fuck the pods and go cold air box next time also maybe?

had ARC Airbox before the trust pods, but had to switch because i bought the trust piping kit and the arc box won't fit.
My mistake not checking the filters before installing them (trust piping kit was second hand)

so its been pretty much a year since i have done anything with this car :/
after much thinking i have decided to spend some more money and see if i can get it anywhere near what i want it to be.
I have the following parts on order to help get it back on track
Nismo Twin Plate
Project Mu SCR Pure Plus 6 2piece (Rear)
Project Mu SCR-PRO (Front)
100,000km service kit
Do-Luck Tarzan G Box
Ikeya Formula Rear Arm Set
unfortunately there is a 10day wait on the front disc, Do-Luck Tarzan G-box is end of August, and twin plate is eta unknown :(
Once i get all the parts i will throw everything on, clean out my injectors get a retune and finally hit the track.
Will be interesting to see how it handles with the nismo circuit link up front and the adjustable Ik stuff in the rear (aslong as it fixes my -2.5 degree camber in the rear i will be happy).
Also looking forward to testing out the G Box, from everything i have rear/watch it is meant to improve the handle of the car alot

I wonder why you don't have an ETA?

i think the 2-piece on the rear just means its a set. However i did pay little extra to have the rear heat coated as it is an optional extra. I couldn't find any 2 piece rotors for the rear

Because it's worth waiting for.
They are so easy to use, a mate has driven my nismo twin equipped 32R, and a mates HKS twin equipped 32R... reckons it's night & day difference.

yeah as soon as i read about it, i knew i had to give it a try. They should be in stock now (was told end of August) so will be placing my order for it and the clutch in the next few days.

Tempted to throw the brakes on and take the car to no limits of Thursday but i know i will fry the clutch, as soon as you get full boost in 4th gear it starts to slip. 3rd isn't too bad but once the clutch gets warm it gets pretty bad

so far months and months of waiting... clutch is no longer on back order and has been Shipped via EMS :D
now to send the car in for major service, new clutch, clean injectors, retune and we should be ready to finally get back on the track after almost a year + of being away from racing :(

So after trying to get the car ready for ALM timeattack, and having Josh at Galvsport fit me in to have the clutch install, we found a small issue with my new project mu rotors, due to the 2 pc design it means the rotor is slightly offset, resulting in the caliper hitting the rotor :( So with that in mind, i decided rather than rush to get the car ready for the timeattack we would spend some time and get everything done so it would be good to race!
So seeing as i am doing the 100,000km service went and bought some Hks cam gears and hks timing belt!

So what was meant to just be a Clutch swap at Galvsport turn into 4 weeks of hard work by Josh to get the car back up to standard. Firstly i just like to say a BIG THANKYOU to josh, he went above and beyond with the car and i am more than happy with the way it is now.
So run down on what was done
Installed Nismo Twin plate
Machine dog bones on the AP brakes to suit the Project Mu Disc
Install Aircon (this one is for my oldman who drives it now and then)
Install Full Suspension Arms Front and Rear
Remove and Clean Fuel rail and Injectors
Major Service inc installing Hks cam gears and timing belt
Replace fuel lines
Install new speedo cable
Install new power steering rack
Fab up new Decat Pipe
Wheel alignment
Tune at All Star
Will take some photos and upload soon but for now here is the rear suspension bits
http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/374524_215925038542699_11076881_n.jpg
The only issue i have now is that now the rear is setup correctly, the tire hits the inside lip little, so i will other roll the guards or raise the rear up little.
can not wait to hit the track now! bring on no limits

Yeah it has been... at one stage i was ready to just say "fuck it" and burn the fucker haha! But finally i can see the light at the end of the tunnel, lets just hope all this work will return good results at the track, and i haven't forgotten how to drive without hitting walls lol

First shake down for the car was last night at no limits, Overall very happy with the night.
Managed a PB of 57.9 in some pretty average condition. Was just great to get out and see how the car goes.
Alot of work to be done now with fine tuning the suspension, will be reviewing my data from my data logger and hopefully that should help point out the section i am losing time in. Definitely feels like the car has the gear to do 56 second, so this will be my next goal

So much more grip! Car rarely under-steers or over-steers by itself. Power is up alittle compare to the r33 but i think the torque is the huge difference, as long as i am above 4,000rpm the thing pulls hard to redline. Very balance car!
na, body is still very average, at some stage i do plan to go the full respray and fix all that up but for now i just want to focus on spending more time at the track then it sitting in a workshop
Car looked good last night. Certainly put the power down in the wet better than mine.
