View Full Version : 4wd tag along?
mr_mike
11-04-2011, 06:59 PM
Throwin this out there but is there anyone i can tag along with next time you go for an offroad run.
My close mates either dont have a 4wd or are to busy with uni and shit at the mo to go out and as such my poor GQ is left on the hard stuff most of the time.
I'm a bit hesitant to head out by myself incase i end up getting stuck and walking a million miles back thru the bush to civilisation.
I'm not a total noob offroad and have done a bit of sand and hilly stuff in my previous 4wd. And i have recovery points and all my own recovery gear. At the mo the GQ is stock with just a set of 31's and sway bars removed, but should be pretty capable for most stuff.
So hit me up if you dont mind an extra tagging along.
cheers mike

My friend came with us to the powerlines track to test out his stock 80s and that ended up on its side. No damage tho cause it was leaning on the bullbar

Jump in the car and do the powerlines, any weekend there will be mass amounts of people going through, always someone to help... So many chicken tracks though, there is always a line to take that will guarantee not getting stuck.
Same for gnagara pines, get a GPS and go forth, unless your playing in the lakes you won't get stuck there either.
Wilbinga is another good one, definately can't get stuck there.

no point doing brunswick. i heard it got graded a few weeks back.
on the other hand we at team bodgtech are getting a mud comp going by the end of winter if all goes well, not really for big hardcore rigs but more from stockies to almost hardcore.
easter weekend i could be keen to show people 2 tracks providing you have atleast one locker f or r and reco points

I usually hit the tracks by myself, I don't do the hardest line as I'm precious about my car, its a tourer at the end of the day... Scratches are one thing, dents are another!
Going by yourself doesn't limit what you can do, powerlines has maybe 4 spots that are 'hardcore' but you can take them on and reverse if required without having others around.
I get stuck in silly places, like sand dunes, nothing a winch can't get you out of :)
mr_mike
12-04-2011, 04:29 PM
yeh if i had more methods to do self recovery (winch or Maxtraks) i would be a bit less worried about headin out solo and gettin stuck.
Found a new area near my place that cools intresting.

Hey Mike, you can get the plastic bread pallets and chop them in half to make some cheap style maxtracks that can help in a pinch.
Usually find the pallets in bins or dumped outside supermarkets fairly often.

CT18 truck wash, it's the only thing to remove mud or holiday grime from being out bush for a few weeks. Leave it on for a few hours to soak in.
Next closest thing is a full car acid dip.
mr_mike
17-05-2011, 09:09 AM
This mud is like a thick solid sludge it just doesn't move even when it's wet, when it's dry it goes solid like a rock had to sit there with a screw driver and hammer actually chiseling it out of the front x member on my hilux after a day in the mud
South
17-05-2011, 09:58 AM
CT18 will get through it, it eats your skin, trust me!
When we got out HDJ80 it was filthy underneath, the underbody protection wax was all red from its previous touring days. It is now black where it should be black the wax is black or not there at all and the gearbox is shiny silver.
Nothing but CT18 has been sprayed underneath to clean it up, and then WD40 to add shine. If you could eat upside down, the undercarriage of it would be clean enough to do so.
mr_mike
17-05-2011, 03:39 PM
yeh i'm aware how well ct18 works, i work at a truck smash repair shop and we use it often to clean chassis.
Also aware how harsh it is on ur skin as we used it a couple years ago on an Austraila day slippery slide as we had no other detergent to put down.
Last time i had to clean the GQ after being down Skeet Rd i used the high pressure steam cleaner at work and even that was struggling haha

yer when for quick look at skeet only to find a group of guys who hit one of the holes straight up.... didnt get very far and all standing around looking sorry... had developers etc doing shit there laughing... couldnt stop either :p
why would they attempt it when they have no way of recovery is crazy
mr_mike
14-06-2011, 05:17 PM
yeh i have been stuck in the mud at skeet before it sux.
I dont even try the hole that i know are shallow when i am by myself as its so easy to get stuck, and even with another vehicle and a snatch strap some of the holes are that deep u'll struggle to get out.
What really annoys me is people who go thru the mud holes but dont have any recovery gear or safe recovery points, then think your a pingpingpingping when u wont snatch them out by their bullbar.

yeh i was down there with 3 other cars for about 2-3hrs yesterday avo. soooo much water! missus has a heap of photos will chuck some up later.
Had one scary moment, carving across a rutted out section following mates 80 series i started to skid sideways and my left hand side dropped into a rut that would of been over a meter deep i kept the foot in but was the rut kept dragging me towards much deeper water while the patrol was on a 45deg+ angle. Luckily the front got traction and managed to hop out of it.
Also managed to clip a tree with my back 1/4, mate went thru a mudded section first and was pretty boggy so said to me give it some stick. I did wheel speed was about 80kph 4 wheel skidding across the mud and i had to try guide the rig thru 2 trees that were just wide enough unfortunetly i kept sliding sideways and clipped one of the trees. Havent washed all the mud off yet so dont know how much damage, doesnt look like much more than a couple scratches luckily.

19-06-2011, 07:16 AM
One thing i did notice yesterday was how much and how far into the mud pit section has been staked out with surveyers marks for development.
the whole area is swamp and you can obviously see how high the water table is there i wouldnt think it would be stable ground for building.

they have done the same in that land behind CY Oconners, that was a massive sand hill then they have cut out all that sand and dug down about 2-3mtrs and now its all flooded! so now they are filling it back in again.

Yeh their near it but not actually part of the clubs land. I didnt want to go in them the other day cos its not exactly a legal area to go driving and there was lots of clubs members going up and down the access road and if one of them called the ranger we would of been in a spot of bother.

Skeet rd is actually listed in the UBD. But its off Randford Rd in Souther River. drive down to the end then continue past the rubbish piles. From here you have 2 options either go to the left slightly and follow under the powerlines and there is a heap of mudpits about 200mtr in. Or you can go right along the tree line. The pits are very deep (just ask the moto rider in the pics above) follow these along the tree line then at the end of the opening turn right. Again sticking to the edge of the opening there is a shit load of slushy muddy deep holes for you to get stuck in. From here you can pretty much stick to the edge of the opening and you can loop all the way back around to where you started.
From where you entered and the sealed road stops you gan go left towards the big lake, most of this lake is about 30cm deep except just to the left of the island in the middle, there is a pretty deep hole there.
You can go across the lake and there is a heap of sandy whooped out tracks thats zig zag thru out that side of the area then eventually come back around to the other end of the powerlines i already mentioned.

here's a quick map of nearmaps, i figure this could be the last winter that skeet road is gonna be accessable before it all becomes houses and the area is packed enough as it is so no harm is howing people it.
Plus i have found a new area to go play in that seems to be pretty untouched and shouldnt get the developers shovel any time soon.
Blue circles are the lakes, these are pretty shallow all over but there is some random holes in there so just be careful
Red areas show the deepest holes there, some of these will be deep enough to swallow a 4wd up to the windscreen. I had my 6" lifted hilux with water over the bonnet in one of these holes.
Green line shows some rutted out mud tracks you can take that will loop you back around to the entrance.

No amount of rain is going to make your patrol look clean again. :P I would be more worried about a new radiator for the r31. Back paddock raceway/shooting gallery is way more fun than mud.

old man washed the patrol cos he had to use it since i fucked the wagon lol
yer i think i have a spare radiator somewhere in the shed need more r31's /vn's but after seeing how good todd's daihatsu goes around the firebreak might have to look at some light fwd options maybe a 88 corolla or X2 excel what do ya think shane
MrSparkle

Excel's are the new datsuns (they wont break no matter how much you hammer them.)
I want a falcon. I'm thinking EB-ish auto, comfortable and if the small cars get in my way i can just push them to one side. Might ask ryan what he wants for his EA - lol

If you go out to skeet rd keep your mouth closed while you're going through the mud as it was an old sewage dump years ago.
