Cheers guys, slow day at work so i thought i would start a thread.

BALISTC - Yeah mate, ill put some photos up when i get home of the engine bay.

Rhys - Cheers mate.

TJ - Thanks mate. Some of the Super6 guys with the same mods and in some cases less mods have dipped into the 11's with slicks. I would hope to run a high 12 on street tyres and a low 12 on slicks with a better setup (weight reduction required!).

Torquen - Nice name :) It makes a fair bit of torque the Super6, i love the way it delivers its power, bloody good fun to drive. It is nice to be different but nothing wrong with V8's ;)

AGIT8D - LOL, not to many people are keen on the V6 sound, i for some stupid reason love it! Its pretty loud on WOT! Blower is a nice touch. Ill have to post a dyno video later on. Doesnt sound as horny as yours though mate :)

dmwill - Cheers bud :)

Steppo_GT - Cheers mate, yeah i know KALSPL (Darryl) fairly well, haven't played golf with him for a long time lol, the Super6 guys usually go for a cruise up to Kalgoorlie in May and stay with him. I think his ran a 12.23 at the drags. Very good time.

31-EVO - Yeah it sounds good under load, cheers :)

Drift_Marti - FAIL! But thank you

Very nice car, but...standard brakes? Haha.

I plan on going not stopping!

It is definitely the next item on the list. I would love some monster brakes but still want to be able to run the 15" slicks. So im limited to the VT upgrade, good pads and a 1" booster. Job done.

If i do go larger than the VT upgrade, whats a good kit? Anyone got opinions on brakes?

Probably the biggest performance mod on the car, intake temps dropped dramatically allowing me to run a smaller pulley/more boost and also allowing the tuning to play with timing more.

The sound of the blower whine is also a massive plus!

car is impressive.

but i will say i am most impressed with your rigorous timekeeping and step by step upgrades. wish i had kept records like that... are you an accountant by chance?

as for brakes, what about rx7 4 pots? work out around the same size and surely would perform better than the single piston? i think? jobbies.

otherwise if you want vtish brakes i have a pair of vz calais front calipers here to sell, newer and would probs fit better.

does this have IRS then?

Thanks mate, im not an accountant lol but have some OCD issues. I never documented & photographed the dynamat installation, that pisses me off hahaha.

As for brakes ive never heard of a Commodore owner using Mazda calipers, what size rotor is required or will they bolt onto a slotted version of my current rotor? The Calais calipers sound good but i would prefer a kit with new slotted rotors, calipers, lines.....

I appreciate the offer though mate.

The car is IRS.

As far as the VT-VZ brake upgrade (other than HSV brakes, they're all the same) goes, it's pretty easy.

Speak to the clown down at South West Brakes, he is an AL sponsor, will definitely look after you :)

I really do like the look of the SS-V's on the white/silver combo, they look great.

As you've said, standardish brakes will allow full slicks, but bigger brakes allow better performance in that area. It depends what you want to use the car for. If drag racing is your thing then you still have two options: full slicks or ET streets. This will allow you to run a larger front brake setup and your existing wheels.

If you want to do circuit racing I would recommend a set of wilwoods or similar. It'll depend on your budget but I think HSV brakes will only take you so far and then you'll need to turn to something aftermarket if you ever decide to get serious.

I have taken a few people for a spin in my car with the street rotors and pads on and done a few 140-30km/h stops, from what they've said the brakes perform quite well.. Mine are wilwood fronts, stock rear.

Nice effort dude, very well documented, a build thread on a forum is also a good way to see approximately when you did stuff too, so at the end of it you can always pull up your thread and recap on when the special moments happened :)

The VT twin piston brake upgrade is a good one, and im glad to have it on my VS ute because its one thing to go fast, but if you cant stop then you've just concocted a recipe for disaster! I wouldnt mind going up to a 4pot front, 2 pot rear eventually but until then i would rather focus on a water-to-air intercooler on my M112 to get them intake temps down!

Cheers Andy, any reason he's a clown? Ill most likely see Perth Brake Fabricators and set me up with a package.

Mullmans - Cheers mate

hiddeous - S/Cross & Unit sticker! Get stuffed. I even took off the SRS sticker from the b-pillar! IT does have a BYE Performance sticker though. The blower pulley on it is the smallest they make lol, there is one size smaller but they stopped making them and its impossible to find a s/hand one. It has a Powerbond 5% OD balancer so that helps boost also :)

AGIT8D - Cheers for the advice mate, ive seen your brakes on SC. The car handles well for what it is but imo its no good for any type of circuit racing. The only time i can see it going around a track are track days/powercuise. Definitely more suited to drag racing. A decent brake upgrade is going to help stopping at the end of the 1/4 and give me a bit more security/confidence on the road. My current 'everyday' rims are 16's so im pretty sure VE calipers & rotors will fit. I think i can then run a slick or semi slick on a 16" (not sure though)

There is still a part of me keen for monster brakes and run the 19's permanently.

INSINR8R - Thanks mate.

1CNT LS1 - Thanks, yeah brakes are next ;) I have in the past had to sift through my thread on L67T to find information about my own car lol. Regarding your intercooling options. Pete at BYE Performance may be able to make you an A2A intercooler plate.

KAL SPL - I did say converted in my first post :p Dont start a S1/S2 shitfight in my thread punk hahahahaha. Whens the Kalgoorlie weekend this year!

How desperate is this, 4th post by me in a row in my own thread!

Went to the plex tonight to see how the car would go. Disappointed to be honest, not in relation to the car but my lack of driving skill. I believe it held me back 0.2, possibly 0.3 seconds. I only got 3 runs in, it was fairly busy.

The car was run in the following condition;
- 3/4 tank of BP98
- Nulon octane booster
- Neuton NT5000 16" street tyres with 85% tread
- Front tyres were at 40psi, rears at 40psi for first run. Second and last run rear tyres were at 32psi.
- No suspension changes

Items that were removed from the car;
- Dash mat
- Floor mats
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Spare tyre
- Air compressor
- I did a poo, wee and shaved :)

1st run
ET: 12.765
TS: 111.66mph
60': 2.129

2nd run
ET: 12.477
TS: 112.21mph
60': 2.014

3rd run
ET: 13.126
TS: 111.94mph
60': 2.155

There is so much more in it :(

Thanks mate, i am happy with the times but feel like i could have gone quicker. Forgot to add that i hit limited on the 12.4 pass going from 2nd to 3rd.

It would be nice if they cycled through each staging lane twice in a roe to get two fairly close together runs.

Edit: edited the MPH on the 3rd run above. 114mph was a typo, 111.94 is correct.

I saw this last night, very very straight and clean vs. Great times to go with!

Thanks mate

I was talking to a few guys infront & behind me in the staging lanes about ET semi slicks. Fairly pricey, about $600 a set yeah?

The highlight whilst waiting in the staging lanes were a few bewildered people. There were two guys, one in a Supra, the other a Cressida i think with a 1JZ conversion. Cressida was stock, Supra had over 400rwhp according to the owner, he was braging to the Cresssida owner about running a 12.7. The Cressida owner said to the Supra owner that he raced me and lost. Supra owner goes "You lost to a stocker?" He strutted over to check it out and asked how much power it made, i said 300rwph, he said "Bullshit! What did it run?" 12.4. The guy just couldnt get it. Good blokes though, just funny.

Then there was a brand new FG XR6T 6 -speed auto ute next to me which only had an intake, tune & exhaust. That ran a 12.9. He said the cost owes him $70000! How much are they new? It looked fully optioned. He almost fell over when he found out what i ran with my power output. 12.9 imo is bloody good for minimul mods.

Then some teenager pointed to my carbon pod enclusure and asked if thats a supercharger!

Fun night......

Last time it was weighed it didnt have the intercooler plate, ss piping and fmic. So there is another ?kg

It would be nice if they cycled through each staging lane twice in a roe to get two fairly close together runs.

Any time made up for being fresh in the head on launch technique etc would probably be lost in heat soak from the car being warm after a run up the black top, then down the back straight, and lining up again I reckon.

Great times regardless :)

If you can get that 60' down then yeah. 2.0 to a ~1.8 would = ~ 12.0.. Get some ET's and change suspension unless you want the 11.80 in full street trim.

Although i would like to know where to go for tyres?

Is there a forum connection?

What are prices like?

Whats the difference between ET Streets and MT Street Radials?

Is Micky Thompson the only brand or are there other companys?

Could i run the MT Streets on a 16" wheel or is the selection of tyres greater for 15's?

End question time.

AGIT8D
13-05-2011, 09:16 AM
ET Streets and MT Streets Radials are same same I believe. They are a radial tyre which means you can use your existing front radials.

When you go to a cross ply full slick you need the matching front runners.

15" should be cheaper and the range is good enough. 235/50 has done 9 second passes on turbo LSx combos, or you can go for a 255. 275 will require an 8 inch chaser and some massaging or stock suspension.

Run FE2 or similar shocks and springs in the ass, 90/10 shocks up front with FE2 or similar springs, pull out the front passenger seat, get the fuel down to an 1/8th tank or so, and try again.

There are other brands of street radial tyres, from memory Hoosier do a tyre. MT are the most common, however. Check out places like Rocket Industries to see the tyre sizes etc, then purchase from whoever.. You should be able to find some second hand ones floating around as well. As long as they've been stored in a cool place out of the sun they should be okay.

Thanks mate,

Considering my lack of driving ability i wont be going full slicks. Heard they like to wonder around the track abit.

ET/MT streets are the way to go.

Im not interesting in changing everything for the quickest time possible. Thats not what the cars about for me. But i like having fun in it.

Ill get some ET/MT streets for the 16x7's that are on the car. With IRS the tyres sit inside my gaurds a fair bit so a 255 may be possible.

Get out there and give it another crack. Dont really want to remove stereo and interior though.

AGIT8D
13-05-2011, 10:09 AM
255s might be a squeeze with lowered suspension. putting stock stuff back in won't take you too long, especially in the bum of the car.

i hear you though, wanting to get the quickest "street trim" time is the best gauge, but if you decide to go tenth chasing, the above should help you out.

Will swapping the very end muffler which is a twin in/twin out 2.5" straight through muffler to either a Varex or get the twin pipes made into a single 3" into a baffled/restrictive muffler take the edge of the noise??

Cheers in advance.

Extractor secondaries modified to a 2.5" outlet

Engine conversion and new engine number is all legit through DPI. Modifications are not, however 90% of the Super6 community have not had issues clearing a yellow sticker without removing any of the engine additions. BURNOUT VIDEO = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xiG4mwVZ18

I went to the West Coast Commodores Track day today, it was good fun. The timed laps were a bit gay because i only got 3 laps. A warm up lap, quick lap, then cool down lap (which i used as a second quick lap) Not sure what time i got, ill find out throughout the week. To be honest 3 laps were probably enough, had some horrible brake fade going into the first corner, i even hit the brakes earlier than the previous lap and it wasn't pulling up anywhere near as good, thought i was going to bury it into the sand trap but lucky it held and i broke through the first half of the corner. Didn't have much confidence with stopping so i took it fairly easy from then on.

The slalom was good fun, and the go-whoa was good but it rained just before the go-whoa starting so i basically skated the length of the setup.

There were a tonne of really nice and quick cars there. Also a bunch of typical egotistical dickheads that couldn't drive for shit. I'm no Craig Lowndes, and im not talking about spinning out because your pushing the limits or trying something new but spinning out because your a nob and should only take public transport! People who span out and kept in it spraying grass and sand all over the racing line gave me the shits.

I didn't do the last cruise session. Took the opportunity to put the stockies on the rear and watch others go around the track.

Justin, Matt and Ben rocked up just it time to help me change tyres :) Good timing hahahaha

Lined up for skids and the above is the result.

Things i need;
- Better brakes
- Larger set of testicles which will help me plant my foot next time in the burnout!

I'm not a memebr either and the organisers did go out of their way to help. I was riding around in that golf buggy at one stage trying to sort an issue.

Forged there a few photos of you car in the links on WCC FB page

It has transmission fluid in it :)

Hahahaha

Its the original N/A V6 gearbox with 109000kms on it with the following mods;
- Bored out fluid valve to increases coolant flow, prevents cooking the converter
- Fluidyne Cooler
- Corvette Servo
- Transgo stage 2 shift kit

Evening all!

Usually i put the videos at the end but because you will probably be bored of reading ill put it first.

Things i need;
- Better brakes
- Larger set of testicles which will help me plant my foot next time in the burnout!

Hey mate, i was hoping you would post in here. I couldnt remember what your forum name was.

Thunder was impressive but my highlight was finding the balls to get out on the pad with my Calais and rip skids. Two VS Calais ripping skids one after the other was pretty cool. I didnt see your skid though, i cruised back to my bay to let it cool down a bit. Only got to half on the gauge though.

Yeah fair point Tom, but you need to understand im a bit apprehensive about doing burnouts. Ive never done a dedicated skid in that car other than warming up tyres at the drags. That was my first skid and it was awesome fun.

Having no walls to hit was the only reason i did it, i have NO where near the car control or confidence to get in the snake pit at the plex. Most likely get on the go pedal and whip into a fucking limestone wall!

Got a quote to change the rear section of the exhaust today.

Straight after the center two mufflers its getting flanged. From the flanges it will merge into a 3" just before the diff, it will go under the diff into a 16" muffler.

The theory is the longer it has in the 3" pipe the quieter it will be. Then the rear 12" muffler being increased to a 16" will quieten it down.

$400

New rear section of the exhaust isn't as quiet as i wanted but there is almost no drone at 100km/h so that's a good improvement.

Also finally sorted out what im doing with the brakes.

Front;
- VT twin piston calipers
- slotted rotors
- braided lines
- spigot bearings
- EBC Yellowstuff pads

Rear;
- Standard caliper (overhaul if needed)
- slotted rotors
- braided lines
- Lucas or EBC Greenstuff pads

Will get it done before Powercruise

Think Greenstuff pads on the rear are going to be an overkill stick with stock pads or even the bendix ultimates. These dont have much braking power in the rear so pointless to upset the balance.

Thanks mate, ill go standard or Bendix pads on the rear then. This is basically the best combination i could come up with and still fit a 15" rim with slick over the front.

Its still going to lack pure braking performance around Barbagallo with repeated laps but it will be more than enough for cruising around at PC.

Yeah it was the WCC one. I actually went expecting a inflated figure but i got a fairly accuarte reading. My car on BYE's Mainline made 317rwhp so 326rwhp is on the money.

In 2010 at the same event my car made 309rwhp (prior to the rebuild). On BYE's Mainline at that stage it only made 283rwhp.

As H1GHROLLR said it was doing some strange things. Factory stock HSV Monaro made 322rwhp. My L67 and Ians L67 were pretty much spot on. The 4.2L turbo V6 was due to make 440rwhp+ yet only made 360-380rwhp.

Could have been anything! Strapping it down to hard blah blah blah.

HP figures dont concern me one bit, but i do enjoy dyno days.

Yeah I would suggest possibly strapping the cars down too hard, potentially in anticipation of big wheel spin etc?

My car has made different numbers back to back being over tightened on the dyno due to using really shit tyres. We ended up sitting in the boot instead and backing it off a little.

Also, as Dan said, strapping a car makes a massive difference. When we were tuning my Calais it was making 280odd then when we tightened the straps and i picked up 29rwhp :) It was spinning on the dyno.

120rwhp change just from the strapping is outrageous!

I drove the Calais a fair bit over the week end, Saturday night and Sunday to Bindoon for a pie. I made a new rule to never drive the Calais in the wet again. The way power comes on makes it fairly skatey with only minute amounts of throttle. Saturday night on Alexander accelerating slowing over a small bump resulted in a significant sphincter testing moment. Then Sunday on the highways I was getting wheel spin in the over taking lanes at 90+.

I am currently using Neuton NT5000's on my 19's and 16's and to be honest I have been fairly impressed with them in the dry. In the wet, I wouldn’t recommend them unfortunately.

I don’t like to test my driving skill or lack of very often. Are there good tyres with wet weather stability out there?

Agreed with the above! If you have a low car and Commodore camber / \ the amount of tyre touching the road will be decreased. just below standard FE2 height is where it is at for maximum grip!

Cheers mys1 and stumps57L. The Calais isn’t 'dog scratching its ass low' and the chamber kit I have is setup quite well. With hard acceleration the camber obviously worsens but general driving the tyre contact is good. Will look into name brand/more expensive tyres.

Powercruise has just finished. Rather frustrating weekend to be honest however I really enjoyed Powercruise and will be going again next year.

I just found out today that I have conjunctivitis, tonsillitis and a chest infection. So I had to put up with that over the weekend. Left early Sunday morning because it got too bad.

First lap of the cruise session on Friday morning I accelerated relatively hard down the main straight and the Calais felt sluggish and wouldn't rev out, I looked down and the engine light was on so I exited the track very quickly. Engine light turned off however the car wouldn't shift gears until I turned it off then on again.
Codes that presented were 21 and 76. 21 = Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) high voltage. 76 = Air/Fuel ratio variation between left and right banks. Checked everything and it was mint. Went out for the off street drag racing against a VZ SV6000. Engine light came on again and I lost the drag. Checked everything again and it was fine. Did the last cruise session and each lap I just eased on the throttle to 3/4 and it was fine. Did once on the straight go hard enough to make it shift down and it didn’t come on. I discussed this with Pete, Matt and Justin throughout the day, tried a few things and on my way to the workshop I gave it a few floggings from standstill and rolling start and it pulled like a train with no engine light. Picked up another TPS just in case it did it again.

First cruise session on Sat morning the light came on 3 times out of 7/8 laps and it turned off by the time I was at the end of the straight, this time however the gearbox wasn't affected. So I changed the TPS to the new one and reset the battery. Only code I got was 12 (12 = System Pass (OK)). Went out for the off street drags and I got off the line way to hot, span tyres through first and second, after that the light came on again and a HZ ute just beat me! I didn't do the last cruise session. This time however the only code that presented was 21.

Did the first cruise session on Sunday morning and the light came on 2 out of 6 laps. I got a video of what happens.
In the video when I get onto the main straight I am easing on the throttle to approximately 3/4 throttle then at exactly 54 seconds you can hear what sounds like a gear shift. It’s not! It’s the engine light coming on and the car becomes a slug.

Good question. I havnt checked the pins on the ECU or plug. Ill have a look tonight.

I noticed my wireing harness has a different colour wire patched inline the TPS wire and was like that when i removed it from a bog stock Statesman with 116000kms on it. Fuck knows why but its never done it before so im leaning towards something within the tune such as TPS percentage values.

No unfortunately. ECU & plug pins were fine. TPS wire through the firewall has been spliced but isnt damaged.

Tuner hasnt got back to me but the problem hasnt presented again.

Im going to the drags next Wednesday so ill see what happens then.

Got a fair few runs in at the drags tonight and it was a bloody nice night for it! Track was also prepped as there is a big race meet on this weekend. Little bit disappointed that the car was still having some minor issues and i didn't go close to my previous PB (12.4). But i was f#@king consistent!

Car was run as it would be driven on the street minus the spare wheel & scissor jack. I had 1/4 tank of fuel with some Nulon octane booster. Only change was the drag radials that i borrowed from Ben (vnformula). Thanks again mate.

1 - 12.628 @ 109.35mph with a 1.861 60' (Drag radials, engine light came on)
2 - 12.631 @ 109.22mph with a 1.866 60' (Drag radials, engine light came on)
3 - 12.632 @ 108.69mph with a 1.842 60' (Drag radials, engine light came on)
4 - 12.626 @ 110.02mph with a 1.892 60' (Standard 225/60-R15 street tires, engine light came on)
5 - 12.761 @ 108.69mph with a 1.899 60' (Standard 225/60-R15 street tires, NO ENGINE LIGHT!)
6 - 14.098 @ 107.01mph with a 2.294 60' (Standard 225/60-R15 street tires, NO ENGINE LIGHT!)

After the 4th run Ben had a good look under my bonnet and around the TPS. He found the throttle cable bracket is flexing when i press the pedal to the floor. The throttle body is open 100% before this point and me pushing it harder is obviously causing it to read a incorrect/higher value so it throws the code and the Calais enters safe/limp mode.

In the 5th run i was conscious of this but the boots i was wearing didn't provide good feel so i had it as close to 100% as i could, the car revs out significantly harder when the light doesn't come on, its like a different car.

6th run was for shits and giggles, stalled it really high and launched extremely hard to test how much grip was actually out there. Powerskidded through second lol

Sort the bracket out, give it another go.

The first three the engine light came on towards the end of 2nd. You can hear the car short shift from 2nd to 3rd

The following one is a mate from work, paid 10k for this WRX as is. Bargain if you ask me, very fun car to drive.

I tried stalling the car up as much as i could on my street tyres.

So clean.

As much as I hate older Commodores...I have massive respect for something as clean and subtle as that.

Had some awesome fun in the Calais yesterday. Group of mates organised a skidpan day at the RAC centre at the airport. No decent videos though.

First time I’ve ever driven the Calais as hard as I could and it was awesome. New brakes didn’t fade and pulled up really well. Powered out of corners with greater control and confidence where at first I would lift off/brake and be erratic with the wheel.

Also drove a friends mildy modded Evo 7 (i think it has 280+awhp). First Evo ive ever driven and i now want one. Very easy to drive hard and just a shit load of fun.

Skid pad day at the RAC Driving Centre. Ive just rolled three videos into one, the last is the best quality. Windy day and the wrong setting on the camera is to blame :(

What is next for the Calais.

- Fix A/C
- Complete a few 1% mods
- Intercooler piping - SS > Alloy?
- Blower bearings
- Re-tune

Thoughts on the swap from stainless steel I/C piping to alloy? The driving characteristics of the car have changed slightly since the work was completed and the additional weight added to the front end. How much of a weight saving could this net me? It doesn't feel like it turns in as nice as it once did.

Unfortunately not mate :(

Mrs & I finally bought a house in August & im deep into renovations at the moment. Have a tonne of work to do on it this weekend so may not even make it as a spectator.

Calais has been a bit of a workhorse lately as i refitted the tow ball. I carted 1.8 tonne of floor tiles to the tip (multiple trips), moved 4m3 of rubbish to verge pickup the Mrs mums house and heaps of other junk. Car pulls a trailer effortlessly! FYI - skip bin would have been cheaper than tip fees! Also, the tip has the nastiest speed bumps before and after the weighbridge!

Calais is in need of a touch up tune. Its done 10000kms now and is a little rich. BYE has been so busy in the lead up to PC and with the house i haven't worried about it.
