A short-cut home almost turned into a tragedy after a man spent the night up to his neck in mud in a northern suburbs' lake.

The young man, described as being in his late teens to early 20s, is in a stable condition at the Joondalup Heath Campus after he became stuck in the middle of Lake Joondalup overnight.

The man had to be winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after rescue crews decided it would be too risky to wade out into the lake.

Fire and Emergency Services were called to the lake just after 6.30am when a passerby spotted the man in distress. It is understood he had spent more than seven hours in the mud after trying to take a short-cut after leaving the Supafest event at Arena Joondalup.
