View Full Version : Working out diff ratios

Have to work out the ratios in the spare Hilux diff's I have.

Questions I have (as I have never done this before)....

How (something about dividing the amount of teeth?)
Can I actually take the diff apart and put it back together no drama?

Or will that fuck something up?

Don't want to ruin anything in the process, I will be careful and shit but yeah... safest way to make sure its all sweet even if it is time consuming...

Anyone done it themselves? Pointers?

Any info/tips greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Paul

Simplest way is to texta mark both axles and the pinion- then see how many times the pinion spins to one full even rotation of both axles.

for 'accuracy' spin pinion 10 times - axle should spin between 37 & 45 times or so.
edit:
39 & 8= 4.88
41 & 9= 4.56
43 &10= 4.3

Will look into it fellas, cheers!

So what division do I have to do after that to figure our the ratio?

divide the axle rotations/teeth by the pinion rotations/teeth.

because you said spare diff you had im assuming its just in the shed?

if so simply just remove the rear cover from the housing and the crown wheel should have numbers stamped in it. eg XX:XX

divide the two numbers and that's the ratio.

Hilux diffs don't have covers you can take off? If the diff is complete , pulling it apart to work out the ratio is a big job especially if it's the front one.

Well, I have to work out the front and rear one.

It is all complete. May have to do that spin the pinion thingo. Will check it out after work today!

should be 4.1s mate exact same from 87 to 97 on diesles, unless previous owner changed them

Dang. Wreckers reckoned 4.3 or 4.5??

Might have to do a quick check anyway.

Doubt they were changed, reckons they have travelled 154,000kms.

yeah just spoke to a mate turns out they would be 4.3s not 4.1s but just check anyway like i said previous owner could have swapped them
