Ok. I bought my R32 with the previous owner saying Autoworx sold it to him as having a rebuilt motor in Japan. I have no reason to doubt as he seemed a really genuine bloke and really regretting sale (have sale invoice, had it 5 years, did 5000kms)
However, no receipts or further information was given... So basically, I don't know what turbos, internals etc are in there. (Recent tune suggests N1s for turbos anyway)
I read this (http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/265890-when-buying-a-skyline-how-do-i-know-if-its-got-forged-internals/) topic and am intrigued by the camera comments, down the spark plug hole. Bullshit or legit? Haven't asked anyone yet, just doing some searches.
Who would be able to do this? Only bothered cause I may do further mods on the engine pending build. I'd definitely say its been rebuilt at some point cause its healthy being an 89, but want to know a bit more about it...
Cheers.

LOL Such a pingpingpingping!
Most forged engines are a tad slappy when first started up but even if its dead quiet and hums quietly it can still have forged pistons in there, probably means the builder gave it a really tight piston to wall clearance. That is 1 clue you can try listen in for.

Yeah, it sounds nothing like my old 32. When that started, it sounded like it was diesel/piston slapping.
Just started it up then, left cold overnight.

Sounds like a normal 26 to me... Shitty quality sorry.
heh my old sr was noisy as hell read loose as. Your engine sounds nice, couldn't detect any abnormal slap but than again that vid is probably not the best judge lol. Just ask some workshop to scope it if you really need to know.

Any reputable work shop would be able to help, start with scalli at x speed, he's the gtr guru. Just go down and see him
Or... wind boost controller to 28psi, if she holds she's built and built well... if not, go see previous owner yell at him then see Ant for a built engine! Win win really.

Yeah, I'll drop into Hyperdrive soon when my redline box oil comes. See if they can have a looky.

rods will probably be easier to see and be a clear indicator of the quality of the build (eg H/I beam etc) when you drop the oil take the sump off too. sure it might cost you a gasket, but worth it for the piece of mind if you intend to boost it and run it hard.
*note i have never taken the sump off a gtr, i dont know if its hard to do, i only speak with experice relating to the 26's 1 armed retarded brother, the 30.

Haven't had time to bring it up there yet, plus going to wait for g/box oil to come, kill 2 birds with one stone, finally just get a general check over/fix anything that needs doing.
Never hurts to get more opinions on a subject.

Nothing. I always have used hyperdrive, just that only xspeed could tune it, so thats where it went.

If you use decent pistons that don't expand at a silly rate when they get hot (read: not Aries) then you shouldn't have any rattle on start up.
Good luck taking the sump off - in a GT-R that's a shit job.

Im an Aries, and i dont fucking expand when im hot, pingpingpingping. Arias pistons in my last SR were rattly as fuck hah.

Cp's in my Fraud play a nice little tune when cold, calm down when warm but still remind you there are there between 1200 and 1500 rpm with no load.
Next engine will get the super doper Mahle low expansion jobbies
Yeah CPs aren't bad but you can def tell the difference between stock pistons and cps. I've been told hks pistons use a piston to wall clearance almost identical to the stock pistons = quiet as?
-Luke-
13-04-2011, 10:46 AM
A mate has the low expansion mahle in his ford 4l, piston noise when cold is barely distinguishable over the injectors. He's running tight/tight clearance tho. Below Mahle spec but they havent nipped yet!

Called Hyperdrive, said nothing much else they can do other than boroscope which may reveal nothing anyway. They'll also look if the engines been apart (def has imo) but no real way of telling that its forged.. Will get comp test done anyway.
Booked in after easter.. so ages away.

give it 30 pound, soon find out whats inside
Sounds like checking the rods will be your best bet than. Stock rb26 will hold together for a period of time under high power.
Lol my last sr had arias + large clearances. I remember Ken at hyperdrive referring to it as "oh the rattly car" haha

Not sure about the rest of you but I've heard alot of bad feedback from box builders about Redline Oil particullarly the anti chatter stuff. Apprently it can cause blockages on oil galleries in the box.

yep would never use smurf-blood in my boxes given the sludge that I have seen in a few boxes.
Apparently if its changed frequently it happens less though.

Whats the point though you pay an absolute premium for oil that you have to change frequently.

Had it in my old 32GTR and was beaut.

All this talk of piston rattle makes me angry. When these "rattly" engines were built did you have the piston to wall clearance checked or did you just smash them in.
My pistons (JE's) don't sound any different to stock. My valvetrain makes more noise.

Previous owner of my s14 blew hg and while the head was off threw in forgies. From my understanding of the story anyway. So basically no honing to suit just pistons of standard clearance put in.
What I believe to be a misconception is that arias are considered noisy when in fact it's builders putting engines together without the recommended tolerances.

OR arias specs are just too loose because they expand so much :p

Yeah, worn bores, new pistons. Not going to work so well! My block was sleeved and then honed to the exact recommended piston to wall clearance and I get nil slap.

400rwhp in a GTR is like getting your first wristy from a chick... Sure it feels great and you think it's the best but everyone else knows you are still a virgin!
