You might remember me from the speedworx forum.
I used to own a holden camira.

I was a member back in the old days when the mod got sent an order for a windscreen sticker with the envelope that had swedish penis enlargement ltd on the outside, and then it got ripped up before the mod opened it to receive the cheque.

cant remember the names of the people involved, but that was bloody funny

Hey

yeah thats the plan, we are looking at running a GT30/35 roller bearing turbo.
Our aims are 500hp at the engine/300rwkws.
I would imagine that to be a very easy goal, but im wanting more reliable power.
So i figure
Lexus AFM
550cc injectors
Walbro external 255l/hr 500hp fuel pump
JE forged pistons
HKS metal headgasket
ARP head studs
ARP rod bolts
ARP main studs
Shot peened factory rods
Tubular exhaust manifold
Gt30/35 turbo
42mm external wastegate
Bosch Bov
450x300x76mm core fmic
3" intercooler piping
2.5" exhaust off the turbo
1" exhaust off the wastegate, exiting through one muffler and out the side (behind drivers door)
completely rebuilt head
completely rebuilt bottom end (using acl bearings)
complete rotating assembly balance
New genuine leads
K&N air filter (massive 6" inlet)
(probably other bits im forgetting)

that should see 300rwkws pretty easily at 14psi (will probably tune up to 17psi)

This is the large large cash injection the car is getting before i buy a house, so im making the most of it :-)

Morgs
13-09-2006, 03:17 PM
Chuck a T04Z on it, budget permitting :)

Btw long time no see

deaf_rattle
13-09-2006, 05:09 PM
Hey man, hows it goin?

Yeah, still not 100% on turbo choice yet, but the gt30/35 turbo made 260rwkws on my mates ma70 with lexus afm, 500cc injectors and exhaust and intake at 11.6psi.
that was with bone stock engine and stock i/c too with has a pressure loss of 3.6psi at 15psi.

So i figure 14psi with upgraded i/c would see 300rwkws easy.

so yeah i should make my target quite nicely.

1UZ aint worth the trouble half the time, just pull the 7M and build it, just dont kill it beyond repair by driving it with bhg if it does happen.

and by "build it" i mean refresh the head, clean the block up, and bolt it back together with a MHG and ARP head studs.

the head is all rebuilt waiting to go onto the block

Head
Acid dipped, bead blasted, decked, cam polish, valve grind and complete rebuild. HKS 1.2mm MHG and ARP Stud kit

Block
Acid dipped
Decked
Crank Polish
Crank Knifeedging and de burring
ACL bearings
ARP Rod Bolts (to be purchased)
ARP Main studs (to be purchased)
Rod ends re sized (yet to be done)
Shotpeened rods (Yet to be done)
JE forged piston set (inc rings)
Summit racing remote oil filter kit
Full rotating assembly balance (yet to be done)

Will be running a gt3082R ball bearing turbo and pretty confident that this set up with the rest of the bolt ons will make the goal of 500hp at the engine.

Expected time of completion is September 07.

Will post more pics as i make progress

Tools required, craft knife, 17mm socket with rachet and bottle opener.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/miniandmore002.jpg
The bushes came as one piece with no cut in it (needed to be like this to be made) so you need to look at the stock bushes and decide where you want to make the cut. I could possibly get them cut before shipping out.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/miniandmore001.jpg
Undo the 2 17mm bolts on each bracket and then remove the bracket. lift the rack up a little bit and pull out the stock bushes.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/miniandmore003.jpg
I took the time to spray abit of degreaser around the place and removed some bolts which were stuck between the crossmember and the steering rack. (im sure you will find at least one there too)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/miniandmore004-1.jpg
Wait for the degreaser to evaporate and then slide in the new bushes.

Put the brackets back on and tighten the 17mm bolts back up.

Big thanks to my mates Malcolm and ewan for their help with the carbon trim.

Just using a wire brush on a grinder to strip the paint at the moment, its going to take me awhile.

Im a little worried, because with the engine bay on its way to looking so nice i will probably have to drop the cross member and steering rack and get all that stuff looking nice. it has opened a can of worms

deaf_rattle

i got the paint from a place called auto paint.
I only got 1litre of colour as its just for the engine bay, guard, bumper and some touch ups.
For what you see i paid $460nz. not much more to pay for enough to do a whole car though!
I did get trade, but yeah.

Big thanks to Ryan (ryanfel) who popped round today with some wheels.
the fronts are prooving difficult to sort out due to the massive 4pots on there but the rears were a near perfect fit (15x8 -12) so with a higher offset, i reckon i could get 9s in there.

think ill go with the 15x7s for now,
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Takashi.jpg can always sort something out later. only reason i need to get wheels sooner rather than later, is to get the thing rolling again with the brake upgrade sorted.

after showing a large amount of booze(engagement party) who was boss last night i woke up ready for some work on the heap (after a good helping of pancakes)

Test fit of dummy motor and tacked up manifold.

runner #6 is pretty much touching the steering rack knuckle and the compressor housing cant be spun enough to have the outlet pointing down. But other than that, it works well. So we will make some changes so it suits both the mk2 and 3 and then it will be finished up.

makes the turbo look rather large when its sitting in place 8O

I made the swap to hex cap screws as i liked the look of them. I couldnt put the original bolts in there as they looked horrible and old.
Thought i might as well put something in their place that i liked the look of.

Im hoping to have it all legal and on the road in time for christmas/new years road trip.

My mate is popping around tomorrow to make a start on the wiring.
Looking at delooming the engine bay as much as we can.
We will be running the stock ecu and lexus afm with 550cc injectors to start off with and then later on ill look at switching to something different like maybe a link g4.

Got a couple of people going to pop round and give me some quotes for the rest of the custom pipe work.

I need downpipe off turbo with divorced w/g pipe
wastegate port welded onto turbo exhaust housing
intercooler mounting and plumbing
oil, trans and ps cooler mounting
remote filter mounting
oil thermostat mounting
intake pipe (turbo to afm)
drive shaft hoop

Think thats all on the pipe work front. haha

If all goes well it should be on the dyno late October.

intercooler placement..

Just trying to work out where to mount the intercooler.

From what ive seen most people go for option 1, but i think option 2 as pointed out by Malcolm would probably be better. Option 1 will mean wiring wont be affected by i/c placement. Option 2 means wiring may need to be routed underneath radiator support member

intercooler is a 450x300x76mm core, 3" inlet/outlet
I think ill end up running 2.5" piping, to make it easier to plumb and hopefully make it more responsive. I may still look at painting it black depending on how visible is it once the bumper and grill is in place.

What are your thoughts?

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image0300.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image0301.jpg

Option 1
Sits behind bumper, but in front of bonnet latch.
Pros
easy to mount, easy to plumb
cons
flow interupted by bumper (would probably need to cut holes in bumper which i really dont want to do) longer piping. Sits lower so more likely to suffer damage

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image0308.jpg

Option 2
Sits right in front of radiator, behind bonnet latch
Pros
good flow, shorter piping. Looks good there (i know that shouldnt really determine position) dont need to cut up bumper.
Cons
Harder to plumb, hinders flow to radiator?

Had the guy around to start pricing up the pipe work etc, thats pretty much what hes thinking about doin. Making a custom bracket for the bonnet latch.

Hopefully hear back from him this week with the quote and then i plan on booking it in as soon as hes free.

Wiring is coming along well, i really shouldve gone after market ecu, but at least this way if i decide to go that way in the future, it should be a walk in the park.

Hopefully have more pics/progress soon.

well motivation has picked up abit after a good weekend of work on the car. Had to miss a few things (drinks at a mates, mates kids birthday and helping someone move) but sometimes you just gotta keep on keeping on.

Another big thanks to Jimmy and "thats a strong drink Malcolm" for their time this weekend.

got pretty much most of the oil and water lines done now. just gotta finish the cold start injector line and the oil return from turbo to sump.

Went for a ride in my mates twin turbo 1uz jza80 and saw how well exhaust wrap works on stuff, so think ill be looking for a good supplier of exhaust wrap soon.

Got the new floor board made up and autodec cut out a corner of the carpet and overlocked it for the battery relocation.

So many hoses and stuff now, but yeah 1 step closer to start up.

Ordered 20l of oil as well, should hopefully do the initial run in and then first oil change.

another package arrived today
2 catch cans.
1 ill use for oil catch can and the other for radiator overflow.
Both will need some modification, but they should do the trick.

Also got some exhaust wrap, going to do the exposed wastegate pipe and downpipe at this stage, although i am thinking maybe i should get another roll and do the headers as well (they are currently procoated)

well another big thanks to Mark from toyota and Brad of Autopartsonline.co.nz for prompt delivery of parts

Got some genuine toyota coolant and a couple of coolant hoses as well as the thermostat seal from toyota.

Some hose for the oil catch can set up and motul brake fluid as well as some water wetter from Brad.

Also had a new throttle cable made up at Manukau autostop and a short cable which we will use for the auto trans to start off with (will make a bracket to connect the short cable up to the stock one)

Also dropped the downpipe off for a 2 bolt flange for the 02 sensor (had screw in type by mistake, but that might come in handy later) intake pipe for a smaller fitting for the iscv and intake manifold for some extra vacuum ports and modification to the throttle cable bracket.

With any luck, ill get the goodridge braided brake lines (thanks to David/toymad) in and bleed the brakes tomorrow.

SHould get the piping and lines all cleaned up and hopefully reinstalled for the last time before engine start up.

Well im down in the dumps about things again.
1 fan is stuffed so i need a new one.
The battery is on its way out, so i need a new one.
7.5litres of oil in the engine and its not even in the lines, cooler or filter yet so oil changes arent going to be cheap.

Had one nasty fuel leak to start with, but got that sorted.
Some gremlins have been playing with my car and the fuel pump and starter signal latch on.

big thanks to Malcolm, Stu and Cully once again for their help. But yeah patience is really starting to wear thin.

Cheers guys.
The real downer is its taken this long (mortgage doesnt help any) but ive been trying to get it finished and certified before the 1st of May as they are bringing new rules in which will mean ill need a catalytic converter.

My mate is popping round tomorrow night to try and sort the wiring issue causing the fuel pump and starter to latch on.

then ill get the gauges hooked up and put the front end back together and take it in for cert. going to be touch and go and there will still be alot of work to do after that, but cert and having it drivable will be a huge milestone.

Huge thanks to "Sir mix tape Adrian", Dangerous Jase, Cully, Aaron and Lovely lisa for their help yesterday.

Got the car running, although missing the blanking plate on the back of the head by cylinder 6 (made it sound like a lazy v8, fixed that and she was running like a subaru. Fixed injector plug number 1 and it was now firing on all 6.

Not idling very well or revving at the moment, but probably something to do with the timing and tps i think.

Made good oil pressure and exhaust note is awesome.

been a very successful day today, big thanks again to Stu, Malcolm, Kevin, Adrian and Crazy Jase. (and lisa for supplying food)

Got the tacho sorted (stu's handy work with Chris's instructions and $2 worth of jaycar bits)

Car is now running a hell of a lot better, with the tps and afm being funny before.

Got oil leak (dont want to go for a dry sump set up!) to sort and power steering system still has air in it.

Still cant get codes from the ecu, but we suspect it has something to do with the auto trans ecu not being connected up.

Another vid for you anyway... hopefully skid vid isnt too far away!

its starting to look like a car again!
Stu has refused to let the urge of binning the auto loom and moving to a different country and has made some major progress this week.

Auto loom is ready to splice into the car and the front loom is pretty much all done.

Dash loom should be sorted this week and then i can think about booking it in for dyno time.

Plugs are fouling due to the air/fuel ratio being lame, so ill get some other plugs in there for dyno.

it would seem that cusco camber plates do raise the car slightly and the wheels stick out about 5mm, so that means ill dial in some camber in the front :)

Think ill make the death race modifications to the car once its legal just intime for megameet.

well im not sure if this weekend was productive or not, but the rebuilt alternator was installed and it still wasnt charging! doh.

Alternator required new brush holder, regulator and bearing/clips to suit.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image1000.jpg
Long story short... one of the main relays decided it was gay and wasnt working properly (so alternator was probably ok before the rebuild)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image1053.jpg
Safc is now installed although i need to mount it properly.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/deaf_rattle/Image1058.jpg
The car is still hitting some sort of cut/power loss.
Driving normally you will get to about 2500-3000rpm before it starts farting about/all power drops off.
if gentle with the throttle you can get to about 4000rpm before it starts doing this.

Going to try and check fuel pressure soon and swap over the afm electronics.

Really need to get the diagnostics working properly, so im on the look out for a yellow plug manual ecu to suit.

Save yourself the Hassel, Get a stand alone engine management System.

For the time youll spend re wiring and sorting out bugs. A after market computer (microtech, Vipec, Wolf, Autronic etc) will be a simple and easie long term solution. tuneable and more reliable!

just my 2 cents. You've spent so much on the supporting bits, and it seems like a waste to try and run a standard computer with plug ins!

He's right. There will be so much hidden power if you dont get it tuned properly, and without an aftermarket ecu it'll probably end up that way.

But either way, nice build.

12-07-2010, 02:38 PM

well not much to report, except the battery is probably dead. So im on the look out for a replacement orbital exide battery, or optima if it will mount up the same.

Big thanks to my right hand man (and occassionally left hand) Malcolm, we tested the fuel pressure last night with a 14psi gauge! doh!
Put the trusty oil pressure gauge on there and it seems there is a problem.

The walbro (was sold it as genuine) seems to be really loud and we are going to test it out of the car, bypassing the factory fuel lines.

Not sure what to do if the pump proves to be ok, i guess ill have to redo all the factory lines.

If the pump is knackered ill probably opt for a bosch unit.

Im so over it, i should just put a rotor in it.

Also, thanks to Kevin for the power steering reservior of non floppyness. much better.

and because updates are gay without pics.

deaf_rattle
01-08-2010, 08:01 AM
cheers, we wanted to keep the bov in as similiar location/set up to the stock set up.
Works perfectly fine as is, i guess ive done a lot of things in this build that are a little bit outside the norm, but thats why i have a mk2 supra. Cause its something a little bit different.

thanks! im really looking forward to taking it to the strip and doin a fulll length burnout lol

well we ran the pump with make shift lines and fuel cell to the rail to eliminate the factory lines as being a problem.
The pump seemed to be alot quieter like this.

We put more gas in the car and put the fuel pump back in its place and the car seemed to run mint for a few mins and then started to cut out again.

We have the walbro mounted in the stock external pump location, but thinking maybe this is too high?

Pretty sure the pump is ok, but is there anywhere i can take it to get flow tested?

Is it worth switching to an intank pump?

on a brighter note....

these pics show the chassis damage better. 8O
but panel beater says engine can stay in for repair, so thats good.
Although there are a couple of minor oil leaks that i need to fix.

Also had some people asking about cooler mounting and i/c pipes, so here are some better pics of that.

pics show the camber problem on the passenger side. will look into this when i get it back, the suspension arm is flogged out where the bushing is, so i suspect ill need a new bush kit and arm to sort that out and possibly the strut might be bent.

Got alot of work done to it today, think im going to go through and make notes of all the wiring and try and get it simplified abit. So many people have been all up in its grill, its hard to keep track of what everyone has done. Chch probably noticed some rumbling today.. that was just the supra at idle.. sorry.

Need to sort out why there is so much whine through the stereo, while that authentic rally car sound is cool at times, without the anti lag its just not the same.

another productive day..
wheel alignment.. the rear has plenty of adjustment which is good. I did actually see 0.0 on the machine for the rear at one point.
the guy did mention that the bolts might be abit soft for car use, so ill look into replacing the camber bolts which i bought from OZ.
Also, with the front struts in, he wasnt able to adjust the front camber very much. He reckons i need to loosen off the front suspension and then adjust it and tighten it from there. Does that sound right? (cusco camber plates)
People came up to me at the petrol station today and asked me what i had done. I said i put a pod filter on and new wheels. Then when they looked under the bonnet one of them thought it was an rb.... DOH!
Been to see Ciska again today about fitting the lip and skirts. Possibly looking at a bobtail? type. Rear difusser, end caps and a front undertray are in the pipe line too.
Alot of people are commenting on the wheels, they say they are a really good match for the car.

Im trying to sort out what to do for mudflaps, i dont like the stock ones, but ill need to put something on. Im thinking i might put rally type ones on for now and just take them off when the car needs to look good.
any suggestions?

Not sure im used to all this attention, but i guess ill just have to suck it up.

Had my first look inside an automatic gearbox and can now confirm the existence of voodoo and black magic inside them.
The fluid from the stuffed trans was very black and burnt (pretty much had no reverse and driving was a pita)
There is a little portal on the side of the trans... to remove this portal simply remove the circlip. DO NOT REMOVE THIS CIRCLIP!!! <====
Played around with the original auto trans that i had when i first did the engine conversion, installed a new genuine trans filter and new fluid (will need a proper flush to get the last of the burnt fluid out of the torque converter. I do have a spare t/c which is apparently a higher stall, but was unable to find it at the time.
Was pleased to find a lack of oil leaking from the rear crank seal, but it appears there are several little leaks all over the place (several possible leaks from the welds in the sump too.. doh!)

well, alot has happened for me recently. Still battling depression and a few other things.
My Ma61 was crashed into a pole by a mate who borrowed it to impress some ladies.
Subsequently ive bought an s14 silvia, which after being off the road for 3 weeks while i tracked down a starter motor.. it was crashed into and written off.
Now have another s14 and i bought the wreck off the insurance company.
My plan is to do a 7mgte conversion and put the ma61 into storage where it will wait until i get money from my mate to fix it and then ill drop a 1uz into it.

I will be frequenting this forum more often with questions etc about the s14 and hopefully ill get some useful help. Forums in nz are driving me nuts.

Anyway. pics of the ma61, the first s14 and now the new s14
