Thought it was time to chuck a thread up on this seeing as its nearly ready to whore a few track days.
Its a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo
Basicly - 2.5l turbo, 1250kg, rwd.
Currently getting some coilovers, half cage and Project Mu brakes thrown at it, and either R-comp semi's or full slicks depending on how many events i can enter with slicks. Will be running it with a standard engine for the next few months until I free up some more funds, then going a full motec system, 3in stainless exhaust, which should net around 350rwhp.
Will be entering basically anything I can in it, mainly tarmac rallies and speed events (but have nfi what is running at the moment)
Brakes are RDA slotted rotors F+R
PMu H16-03 pads front (same as used in v8 supercars apparently)
PMu HC+ pads rear
and PMu high temp fluid
Anyway, pics.

lsd is currently single spinning badly. On the list of things to fix/upgrade though, but will definitely do a skid or too when its back on the road.
Offset fail isn't helped by the current suspension, which comprises of fucked springs and a broken shock (cleared roadworthy like that though). Once its lowered with some camber it should look a fair bit better.
You know my thoughts on this already.
Kudos to going along a very different path.
I am not entirely sure, but I think summoner's old man is still part of k-tec.

Nice! More and more 944's coming up as track slappers now that they're getting a bit cheaper. They're a pretty good steer straight out of the box!
I think 350rwhwp might be a little optimistic with the mods you've got planned. Think the stock turbo will run out of blow before then. How much boost are you planning on running?
sully? what is yours?
Mines an 87 944 turbo. Close! My lsd works just fine though :)

Not sure on boost, whatever the tuner puts on it basically. If the 86 turbo runs out of puff I'll chuck a turbo of a series 2 turbo, apparently they support a few more ponies.
Probably going 2.7 stroker next year or so but thats more of a pipe dream than a reality at the moment.

Yeah I think so, suits the car, pisses off some of the Porsche fanboys, and might be handy to convince a few people that the half cage is standard
i prefer the look of the 944's over the 968's anyway. I used to have some good battles with a ex fitzgerald black 968 turbo, it probably still gets around wanners

Just ordered PMu pads and RDA disks, factory brembos should be good enough for now. Might look at getting some carbon ceramic brakes from a 997 adapted for my inner ricer (or bratwurster? What's the german term)

Front engine rwd. 50/50 weight distribution but getting it corner weighted in a few weeks
FR layout, but rear transaxle.
350hp seems optimistic from those mods? I thought these were about 160kW stock?
^correct.
your stock brakes will work exceptionally well at wanners, 4 pot bremos front & rear :)
you could upgrade to the later model 944 turbo brakes, cause i think the ceramic will be way too exxy

160kw standard with 80's tuning.. Apparently a motec tuned properly sorts them out, having said that anything over 300 I'll be stoked with, it only weighs 1200kg so should move along
Gearbox has the longest throw in the world, it's more like rowing the car instead of driving it.
they weigh closer to 1300kg & what you strip out might be replaced in weight by the cage your putting in.
that black 968 was said to have 380hp at the crank, but that was the 3.0 twincam.

Rego papers say 1280.. Have stripped out about 30-40 kgs so far, then the front seats weigh like 20kg each with the motors ect, and then there's the stereo and rear seats to take out as well.
What does the black 968 look like? Orange stripes + wheels? Seen a lot of that car and it looks the goods. These cars seem to put out a fair bit of torque + mid range.
Should be good fun when it's all completed
cant go off the rego papers.

US cars that they would have tested had the retarded bumpers, they weigh a fair bit more. There's also a lot of options on these cars that can add a pile of weight quickly. Electric seats weigh a ton, about half of them have a sun roof, optional lots-of-speakers stereo, big fuck off brakes, it goes on. Base weight for the european models is low 1300's afaik. Take a few things out, add a cage, it's not going to be much different from that number. There is a lot of weight that can be taken out of them if you're keen though! Typical 80's German car, everything seems to be stronger and heavier than it needs to be.
yep, pretty much what ive said, but autocar tested a euro version.
anyway once he gets it corner weighted he will know for sure.
I used to do the MC motorkhana competitions back when it was at wanneroo with a chap by the name of Nigel. He has a white 944 turbo as well with a bunch of fruit on it. He still takes it out on occassion. Car had plenty of mumbo - alot of fun to drive!!!

Yeah it's not in bad nick but the previous owner was a bit of a douche. Filters were all ancient, stereo install is dodgy as shit and the cooling system was full of stop leak stuff and now sprays everywhere but for a 24 year old car that's never had any major work done on it it's in pretty good shape.
Mine is either from HK or Japan, not too sure, no good at reading the language! Definitely not the UK or anywhere in Europe though. It's been here for about 10 years or so I think.
Try and get your hands on an lsd if you can. Muuuuuch better! Think they're a bit exxy but you'll love it on the track.

Oh true, I've been fairly lucky with mine but still had a few problems.
Actually drove the car back from adelaide, had a guy check the car out for me (bloke from another forum actually), and had a few hiccups on the way home. Turns out that it had a fucked rear right tyre (massive bulge on it), started out seeming like it had a bad alignment then nearly let go at 110 about 800kms out of adelaide. Had to drive 2000km on a space saver tyre which was fun. Then the other rear tyre developed the same problem outside northam which was fun.
Going to run the car at a few events with stock power (will be getting a full service once the suspension is in) but with quality brakes/suspension ect.
Then will be looking for a decent lsd (have no idea what is available for these, will be talking to RJP), slicks when the current tyres die. Then motec, maybe a later turbo, and exhaust.
Next on the cards is some tint to hide the cage...
Probably should update the 1st post with some actual details too

So its probably time for an update... Will be dragging this to coffee tomorrow so if somebody can take a few photos of it, it would be greatly appreciated as it turns out I take photos like a down syndrome kid with parkinsons.
Car has been working and driven for the past 8 months now, and was daily driven for a few months when I killed my WRX. Did rallysprint a few times over the past few months, and managed to come just below midfield, which I'm really happy with considering my codrivers were shit, my driving was very average, and the car still had a 100% stock engine, with 255,xxx km on it. Was also nice to be able to drive to the event, beat a few trailered cars, and then drive home and only changing tyre pressures on the night.
Is also now rocking a suede OMP 330mm steering wheel, and a new exhaust, which is a 3in from the dump, no cats and a single hand made muffler, which has finally given it some noise and a bit more power, although it'd be lucky to do a 14 sec 1/4mile at the moment, so still heaps of room for improvement when a motec goes on it in the next few weeks.
Will be competeing in the Porsche cup thing this year, and should be towards the point end based on results from before, but both the car and myself have a lot of room for improvement, so see how I go with that, be nice to beat a few GT3's anyway.

Haha yeah have been meaning to update this for a long time.
After ~30 track events, 2 years of ruthless thrashing and 260k kms the stock motor went pop - it did well for an old standard engine running no oiling mods, a tune/exhaust/intake with no rev limiter
Was doing reccy for rallysprint a few weeks ago, sounded a bit off so checked the oil in the pits and it had somehow nearly emptied from when I checked it that morning - topped it up and went for a test drive down the road, hit boost in 2nd at around 30-40kms and it sounded like somebody took a star picket to the bottom of the engine, most likely a rod through the block. It sat on my driveway for the last few weeks until i moved it into the back yard on wednesday night, will jack it up and have a look at the extent of the damage at some point next week - it won't be pretty.
Not sure what I'm going to do with it, I'm planning to move to karratha in july for 1-2years and the car will stay in perth while I'm away. Unsure if I should put a 2nd hand stock motor into it for now, or save funds over the next 12 months to build a 3lt with and chase 400whp. Either way, it will be turned into a street car and I'll look at getting a dedicated competitive track car. I love the 944, its a really fun involving car, but its not competitive in any sense, and short of throwing 50k+ at it, it won't be.

944 = quick track car, can fit big rubber and good weight distribution.
Here's what to do. Remove ventilated boat anchor, install LS whatever. The yanks are well onto this and conversion kits are out there. Simple. That's power sorted cheap. Now tweak the suspension and upgrade brakes and you are ready to have a go at the sharp end of the field.
skidkid
01-03-2013, 01:56 PM
If money wasn't an option, then yes.
It won't fit any bigger rubber than it has on it currently without fucking with guards (225f, 255r), will also mean buying new rims which is a 3k+ proposition. Going larger tyres also brings temp problems into play, where at 255f and 315r you have to run the softest compound A050 to get temp in time for sprints
LS conversion is 10k Minimum, probably 15k realistically. Then I have to worry about the standard clutch, diff (it has an open centre atm too), box and axles, all of which blow over ~450whp. Theres licensing and insurance too, and it would have less resale than an alfa. I would love to put an LS into it, but its not as simple as just dropping a new engine in.
Then i have to take weight out of it, it was 1340 with half a tank of fuel, and had 215rwhp. It has good weight distribution, but little of it is central - the engine is not that far back and the box is at the rear of the car with the fuel tank ontop of it.
Theres not much weight in the cabin left to take out, already has the sound deadening removed, rear seats are gutted and weigh 1-2kgs, carpets are in but are fairly thin, stereo consists of a head unit and 2 speakers, aircon can be removed but its a small system. The big gains would be in a fiberglass/carbon bonnet, guards, doors and a plastic rear hatch - which is $$
Brakes are good, suspension is already sorted, but its hindered by weight and a lack of power.
50k would get the job done, and at that price I think its alot easier to buy a car thats already sorted.

If you spend all your cash on building a turbo LSX (it has to be turbocharged, you've got a 944 Turbo) then you have a valid excuse for not buying Jess a ring. She'll understand :D

So, as many of you know - this is running again
Sourced a newish engine from SA after Tocchi found a guy selling some random 944 parts on gumtree while we were at coffee one saturday morning
The guy I bought it off had built this motor for his 944 Targa car, and had done about 3000km total on the motor (incl 2 rallies) before e85 was released in Adelaide. So he built a new motor for e85 and put this in storage. When I contacted him asking if he had a spare block,he told his wife - who then told him to sell this motor - which was the original motor from his race car.
3 weeks later I had it in my grubby little paws.
Its essentially a stock motor that has been rebuilt, but has a nice sump, headstuds and a few other goodies that I've forgotten about. Stock head as the exhaust ports are ceramic on these motors, so theres nothing to gain from porting it.
Plans for the car from now - tidy it up. I've neglected a lot of small cosmetic items on the car since I began tracking it as I didn't want to spend money on things that wouldn't make it faster. As such, theres a bunch of seals that are perished, the front bar needs painting, and as you expect in a 27yr old car - theres random parts that need attention. I won't be tracking this again, instead starting to save for a proper race car.. Unsure what exactly it will be, but looking at formula fords and Evo Targa cars at the moment.
Overall, I'm just enjoying driving a Porsche (albeit a 'fake' one) before Joe - who is undoubtedly still fapping over the workshop I took him too to pick mine up.
