View Full Version : R33 vibration

my 33 has a harsh vibration I cant seem to pin point.
its nothing like a steering wobble or wheel ballance issue. The feeling is like someone has attached a vibrator to the chassis and it only does it under load.
Boot it in a low gear and start smashing gears and there is no vibration at all, but if doing 50km/hr, put it in 3rd gear and plant it and you get the vibration. Put it in 5th at 50km/hr and plant it and the parcel shelf starts vibrating.
I have checked the exhaust incase it was resting against something and that failed. Gearbox mount doesnt "appear" to have perished.
It will do it in any gear underload and i know the clutch is rooted, the box is quiet as a mouse spinning in neutral, doesnt have any roll over noise. Not something I have experienced before so im hoping someone has.
im just hoping its not the gearbox, I wouldnt of thought so as like I said, the vibration under enough load can rattle the parcel shelf
im waiting for a video I have uploaded to youtube so once thats uploaded I will post it here
cheers in advance

I know it's not an r33 but it sounds a lot like the issues I have with my car in 3rd and 5th with the shitty nissan 6 speed / nismo clutch
I've done 30 000ks with it sounding like that without the box blowing or clutch issues so it may not be too serious but maybe try changing gearbox fluid
here is some crap from nissansilvia.net
The noise you hear through an S15 box is very common and was acknoledged by nissan in the early stages however few were fixed as the noise was at the time demed to be acceptable for a sports car.
The problem has been identified as the front two constant mesh gears. The input shaft and the lay shaft's both have a fixed gear that like to become noisy in the teeth over time. The biggest cause seems to be poor lubrication/oil quality.
I have seen dealers replacing bearings, thrust bearings, spigot bushes etc etc however of all the boxes I have seen pulled down they all display the same or very similar wear markings on the gear faces.
Replacing the gears and using a good quality oil will fix the noisy box issue. Its not nessisary to overhaul the box just to replace the gears. You can get away with just replacing the parts that are worn. Typically syncro's and majority of the bearings are re-usable.

vibrations through the seat feeling like a 'vibrator' could be a center bearing gone or on the way out....if you dont believe it to be through the steering wheel, then the drive line would be where to start

my 33 makes the exact same noise,
low rpm with heavy load and you get a vibration/noise from the gearbox.
i put it down to the gearbox being tired, havent tried a different fluid as yet.

jacked it up, chucked in fifth and let it turn over on its own torque and it just started knocking.
put a screwdriver to my ear on the rear extension housing and it sounds horrid.. box is knocking and rumbling like a slut. Suspect a brg on the main shaft is cactus
awesome.. lucky I didnt pay much for it.
now me and the mad scientist have to strip apart the box
