After years of wanting and pining I finally put a deposit down on my new fortnighter/monthly driver.
I have been looking for a 33 series 2 thats been looked after with your usual mods but nothing too modded in fear of the motor being cactus. I wanted something clean inside, clean and straight outside and perfurably in white.. Oh did I mention I wanted something witha GTR rear wing, coilovers, exhaust and a clean engine bay? Well I found one!
96 R33 Series 2
130,000 Kms
- 9psi boost (going to wind it up to 12)
- Twin plate clutch
- new STD coilovers (not sure how good they are yet :S)
- Front mount
- Bosch 040 Fuel pump
- Greddy EBC
- Nismo GTR wing
- New Tyres
- Alpine R speakers with sub and amp (bonus more than anything)

The interior is bullshit clean, its imaculate, Carpets and skyline floor mats were so clean I took my shoes off before I got in it.
Engine bay was spotless, no rust from seams like most of the 33's do. Not one spot of oil on the block or bellhousing. Even the control arms were still clean and didnt have any greasy buildup..
There are a couple of things I want to do straight up
- Remove Nismo, Greddy and no smoking sticker
- Buff the crap out of the headlights and give the car a good polish and clean
- De-dust the engine bay
- Replace the mismatched rims with something else.. not sure yet on what
Picking this up next weekend.. absolutely stoked with the purchase. Its just going to be something im going to drive every now and then, im not going to pour money into it like the Silvia but il throw some stuff at it every now and then

Rim plans? If its anything like your 32 it will be bullshit clean!

been speaking to Wei at Vision R about new rims for this and was very helpful in giving some options
Im going for a very savage stance and trialing up some rims and colours and pick some up the following weekend
Going Rota Grids in 18"
Fronts are going to be 9.5s +20 offset, rears will be 10's +15 offset
Will either be black or bronze depending on what looks best :)
Need a shoot with Brockas GTR, nice match for each other

28-03-2011, 06:44 PM
That's just it though. The money you want to spend. It's not going to be a daily driver, save a little more and get some better rims. unless they are something you actually like regardless of budget, but otherwise why sell yourself short?

I do like them, Im very happy with them. Im just not in the position to dump 2K on some rims yet as I am saving to purchase a welder and compressor so I can start back on the silvia again. Then I need to drop some more money on my rims and suspension before I can start working on the rear guards. They need to be rolled first. Got lots of money to find atm haha, plus rego is due in a month on the 33.
It was a toss up between the Rota D Force as well in black but until I rock up to Vision R and start slapping some rims and offsets on its still not 100% what ones I will choose, its more 99% just more leaning towards the Grids.

decided to do a warm up run on the miss's car.. Paint just looked dark blue, metalic had died down quite alot and surface was rather rough.. daily industrial area parking and infrequent washing had been the cause.. Should be good for a while now. Was quite impressed how good the Carnauba wax was, its just as good as Mequires next gen Tech wax 2. Clay bar made the paint like glass.

nice pickup, the paint on the front panels seems abit dull though, needs a cut back and polish maybe? the headlights will come up like glass if you buff them with cutting compound
decided on wheels yet?

Maybe in a +35 offset, but according to rimtuck.com and the pic i posted 8.5+30 fits fine.
I thoguht you were going aggressive stace as well, hence the sad face. If you want something practical, as stated, and cop hassle free, then you have selected well.

yeh I was, turned out the aggresive stance would of poked way too much out the guards. Started thinking about a few things
- would need to pump the guards a fair bit
- fronts will scrub on full lock
- will be instant cop bait
- will need to buy a full set of tyres to meet the 10" wide rims
- also risking if any panel work has ever been done to the car any underlying bog may crack up or paint may also turn to shit
just decided I would get something that you could see the lip was level with the tops of the wheel arches and poked out a few mm, which Is what I got.
I can still go the wheel spacer option too, at least I can go legal easily then rather than trying to find some stocko rims heaven forbid I get a yellow.
I think once I lower it a bit more they are going to fill out the guards nicely.. I chose a more practical option you could say

found something interesting this morning.
Vehicle has no hicas which is a complete win. However after doing a FAST check on it I found it is also is ment to have a RB25DE with an auto box. Checked the vin plate and it confirms it. Checked the turbo and its a 45V1 (series 1 33 turbo)
only makes sense that perhaps that at some point and old owner has re-shelled a GTST into this one. Its a very clean conversion at least, cant find any over ride of the neutral park switch or modified gearbox bracket which was another suprise as the 32 bodys have a different mounting points on the body for the gearbox bracket and the hole in the floor is further backwards. This is just a bolt up job.
Question lying however is do I have a hi-comp 25 or not, any way of telling? I suspect seeing that someone has gone to the trouble of swapping everything, why would you not do the motor. Engine number matches the licence papers
im still happy, just a bit suprised. Bright side is no hicas shit!
mitchy

Taking the 33 off the road for a while until I sort out a new clutch and attend to my noisy box
started pulling the box out of the car this morning, not as heavy as I thought it would be, much easier to remove than the RB20 gearbox
http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx164/bangnrb25/IMG_1655.jpg
best gear in the box
http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx164/bangnrb25/IMG_1656.jpg
notice the lines in the gear, may be where my noise is coming from, also the counter shaft gear that the input shaft runs off has scores you can feel with your nails as you glide them over the top.
All the bearings in the box are really nice, box didnt have any roll over noise like most skylines do. Not sure if this box is going to be rebuildable as majority of the gears have score marks in the teeth. Going to take the box into work next week and see what the guys in there think

http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx164/bangnrb25/IMG_1657.jpg
it will make a harsh vibration in any gear if given light load, thinking its going to need a counter shaft and input shaft...
mitchy
22-04-2011, 03:30 PM
How was it easier to remove than a 20 box?
It's the same, just bigger and heavier...
kurbn
22-04-2011, 03:39 PM
Intake isnt as bulky, not as many hoses in the way to remove the starter motor, tailshaft is in two peices rather than one and so you dont have to drop down the support bracket for the shaft, the bracket for the breather is taller which makes it far easier guide a socket on that bolt at the top of the bellhousing. I expected the box to be a lot heavier, its not much heavier than a 20 box really. Just felt more roomy to move around than the 20

exactly!. Il take it to work next week and show the guys in the workshop, Ive only ever rebuilt one gearbox in my life and had a few examples shown to me over time of what noisy gears look like but im no expert so i will get a second opinion before I scrap the box, some of the gears look ok and its very clean inside the box, no gunky or old oil buildup so Im suprised it has suffered any gear wear seeing the bearings feel so nice, however there are a couple of spots where it looks like case hardening is gone on the input shaft gear.. Il just have to get someone who knows what they're looking at haha
jaybee
22-04-2011, 08:02 PM
sounds like a good plan. perhaps it's had its bearings replaced during the course of its life, and the reason for the rebuild was due to bad oil being used which could have caused material wear and fatigue.

How did the gearbox build go?
kurbn
31-05-2011, 05:09 PM
about a month ago now I stripped it down as far as I could with the tools available at work. I then had to send it to a gearbox place to get it stripped down further to find the following.
Input shaft is fucked
3rd gear is fucked
Syncro hub assy was also fucked.
My cost for parts alone was 900 bucks ex japan (dealer cost) + a bearing kit which was a further 400 + the laybor to smash it back together. This was going to blow the box price out of the water and the other syncro's were a bit suss too.
So I ended up shopping around for a box, prices I found from 1250 at KYP or 1500-1600 from JPC or JTW. Found a box of all places today at Tony's auto wreckers for a stupidly cheap price of $990 with 3 month warranty.
So getting that delivered tomorrow, things have been going slow for my couple of builds, far too many bills and expenses been hitting me, so might have to wait until tax time to get my compressor so I can keep moving on with the silvia
Other issue with the 33 is that the rotors are warped to shit so going to look at replacing these too.

Your laughing with the box. You got dog leg/cross drilled rotors? Just bring your car into work and get them skimmed. Will save you a fuck load of money. Just gotta make sure there not under

they're just standard shitty 33 rotors, slotted rotors are pretty cheap anyway :)

cheers :)
Car is now driving around, has a little bit of a noise under load still but not as bad as before. Still kinda sounds a bit like centre bearing noise, Might have to look into the noise a bit later on.
a + side, syncro's are FAR better than my last box and doesnt crunch going into third. Even reverse is perfect! Just need to pull the clutch master cyl out and adjust the rod so I can get more travel, there is a small amount of play there I can take up.
Power seems to be a bit flat atm, it will accelerate, seems to level out the power and then once the vvt kicks in it will go again. Power just feels like its leaning off sometimes.. strange. Doesnt do it all the time. Running stock boost too. May have to throw out that shitty stock ECU and put something decent in.

stock ecu will cry after exhaust/filter is installed.
winds timing out until 5800rpm then it will come on song.
i had a r33 s1.5 couple years back with a catback, air filter, running 12psi with the stock ecu and it ran perfectly fine? they R&R at 14psi and above dont they?
it didnt have an fmic though, pretty sure thats where the stock ecu starts to get lazy

Needs some purpo or gold wheel nuts. I want to put some tyres on it next. 275's on the rear and 255's on the front would be nice. I love grip

after waiting and waiting and waiting I finally managed to get some purpo wheel nuts fitted up. Going to buy a special hex socket for them tomorrow so they dont get scratched/chewed up. Nylon lined if I can.
