After owning turbo fords i was keen to get into a new supercharged GT. Then the heplful people on this forum steered me towards a 2004 W211 E55 AMG and i have never looked back.

Came with all the bells and whistles and lots of buttons you can press oh and 8 piston front calipers with 370mm disks and 4 pot rear brakes. I love brakes.

The best part is the great traction it gets off the lights even with its 5.5ltr supercharged motor.

There are so many parts to buy for this thing from the states its too fun not too.

I have already purchased:
First mod was straight to TKO for Trents magic.
E63 rear lip spoiler
billet pulleys for supercharge idler and tensioner (in transit)
Quaife Diff (yet to be fitted)

Things on the to buy list:
Carbon fiber front lip
Carbon fiber rear diffuser
supercharger pulley
lowering module
RIMS

Here are some pics. I'll put more up as soon as people get around to taking them.

The only thing with modding this is that if it goes wrong, to goes wrong $$$$$$

Another problem is that i cant find anyone in WA to tune it. There is Martin in SA and other mobs on the east coast. I would like a custom tune but if i have to post the ecu over i will. At least the torque tags can be pulled, get rid of some fuel and add some timing as well.

Whats so hard about changing badges? Can't you just order another set and get em painted? Or even paint them on the car if you don't mind ultra fiddly masking off.
Also surely there is someone that makes aftermarket CF badges for these things, which would be b-a-l-l-e-r.

Hahaha! Have you seen Mercedes spare parts prices?

In Australia yes. In America the pricing is not bad.

I am replacing the rear brakes.
Disks= US$100 each
Pads= US$65 set
low pad sensor = US$6

the only downside is that postage is around US$220 due to the weight although still alot cheaper then the merc dealers hear wanting around $900 for the parts.

You just fill box till it comes out of the plug just like my old ford ZF box.

Yeah the E55 does not come with an engine oil dipstick. I can access the electronic one through the dash though but i dont know how accurate it is.

Awesome mate, I've become a big fan of amg's.

If it doesn't work out for you with Martin than may I suggest Jerry Thorton from eurocharged in the US. He was willing to live tune via Internet.

He can ship you a remote tuning cable and can tune the car remotely. This can be done on the dyno or even on the road if you have a wideband / datalogger.

The cable is $100 and is yours to keep. This will make getting free retunes easy.

^^ I abbreviated what he told me for my enquiry reg tuning a c32amg.

Mine was tuned by Oztrack, granted its only a commo but I presume a similar principal would apply.

I rang Steve, (after i had received the efilive software and machine) the machine was plugged into my obd11 port and also the laptop. Then as I spoke to him on the phone he was telling me what to do revs wise, drive around the block etc. He would email me update tunes after i sent him logs. It was a fairly simple process once setup, one i would recommend to anyone. Steve tunes alot of the ls motors in the states using the same method.

I installed a cam myself to save the coin over a weekend, tuned first thing monday morning and was driving by 8.30.

Im sure Martin at Willal could do the same thing.

Azrian
25-03-2011, 03:33 PM
I dont think its the same. With the merc remote tuning in the states you need a wireless net card on the laptop and the tuner makes the changes live via web.

Martin does not have this software as far as i know.

I agree. Martin from Willall is keen to come on board so i'll see how this all turns out first.

Guys in the states are going from 360-370HP at the wheels to 440HP atw with a pulley, larger heat exchanger, larger water pump (intercooler) and tune. With the addition of a set of headers and delete the 4 cats (yes 4) people are seeing just under 500HP atw.

I would ask him. I had my laptop connected to the net with a thumbdrive and steve was moving the mouse from his CPU in the east. It was a simple remote access program. He was making changes live

Thats the problem.

Headers = $2k to $3k depending on brand
Exhaust mod labour = $500
Pulley kit = $1k to $2k depending on brand
Heat exhanger kit and pump = $1k to $2k
Tune = $1000 to $2000 depending on the tuners mood.

I think so Rhys. Just came back from a small drive and it sounds ok so far. I need Uncle Mick to drive next to me to confirm 100% though.

Also whats your thoughts, keep the star on the bonnet or replace it with a flat badge. There are a shit load of badges to choose from.

I like the last rear diffuser better, the first one looks odd with the fins sitting so high up imo.

The silver one with yellow brakes is perfect, copy that!
I'd put a flat, or no badge on the bonnet

Well the E55 is SOLD.

It will be missed but to have fun and modify a car like that you need to be able to keep on pumping BIG $$$ into it or keep it stock.

On the bright side you got the experience of owning a car many aspire to but probably never will. Loved and lost!

Lol, it's a $60k car. Don't give him a bigger head than he already has :p

Cost of ownership is still based on it's original purchase price though. I totally understand why Adrian would want out. The cost of repair is rediculous compared to a Falcon or Commodore.

The cost of repair wasn't the problem, its the amount of km i was doing in it for work was depreciating it hard. I need something that will take the kms i do per week.

It was an awesome car and if it was my second car i would of kept it no problems. I will definitely consider a 2012 E63 TT when the prices come down in 5 years.

Jason you are right. Dean you're just a Muppet.

Definitely agree it isn't the type of car you want to rack up 700kms in per week, don't agree with upkeep costs being extravegant though. Adrian can attest to how cheap parts are when sourced abroad.

US sourced Parts > Aussie sourced parts. I even get wiper blades from the US.
