Just wondering if anyone has seen or heard of an import running a garret variable vein turbo... ive been doin a bit of research on them and they seem like a god send due to their ability to deliver maximum power at all levels of rpm

I believe they only make them to suit trucks at this stage, and you'd need a very capable ECU to be able to control it I suspect.
Once these become popular on petrol cars (only one I know currently using them is the porsche turbo), should be good!

Is the Porka Variable Vane or Variable nozzle? I dont think it would VV turbos would be much harder the PCM too control that a normal wastegate boost control system?

I would expect them to be more expensive that the replacement cost of a human kidney ?!

Smaller Diesel VV Turbos are similar in Cost too most Garrett Hi-Po turbo's.
Im sure I read somewhere Garrett where working VV turbos for Petrol engines but where having problems making the mechanisms survive the Temps in a Petrol exhaust system and had put It on hold in favour of Variable Nozzle and The GTX Range.....Or i could be smoking Crack

garret are one of three companies currently making them as far as ive found, they dont have a waste gate. the porche use the borg warner Variable geometry turbo which is the same thing they are controlled by a membrane actuator, an elctric servo or some by a hydraulic actuator. i would be very interested to see wat mods would have to be made to fit one of these to an rb26

Cummins do make a variation of these for trucks and wat not but garret, borg warner and mitsubishi heavy industries all make vvt for cars

yeah the golf tdi's run them from memory trawling forums. electric servo running pwm. pretty easy to control on a 2d table or in closed loop on pretty much any mappable ecu. they even make a tiny one some bloke had fitted to his raptor quad.

Think HKS are in the process of devolping one with garret for petrol cars. zd30 patrols, yd25 d40 navaras etc all have variable vane turbos. These how ever cannont be rebuilt if there fucked. Youll be looking at around the 2/3 large mark for a new one. The new d40 doesnt even have a mechanicle acuator. Its al electric :s

i love technology! cant wait till this kind of stuff becomes marketable and accessible for RB owners.
i'll wait untill its proven to be a lasting solution before i jump ont he bandwagon

With Formula 1 going back to Turbo powered engines in 2013, we will begin to see more development dollars being invested into these sorts of technologies.
Good times!

agreed :D excited for what it will mean, after how much was learned last time can only be a good thing. i considered compound turbocharging for a while, still havent ruled it out, however shitloads of power available at most times isnt really as good as linear power delivery across the rev range.
