Just wondering if someone has any idea...

Say I was to pick up a second hand well body from a 2005 or younger model Hilux... shouldn't be too hard to fit onto the rear of a 1989 to 1997 model? Providing both body types are the same, ie. Dual Cab

Anyone else looked into this? Have not removed one myself before (though will be this weekend). I suppose best would be trial and error but yeah just wanted to ask first anyway. :)

PS. I don't care if it looks retarded, doesn't follow body lines etc...

Should fit, otherwise make some brackets to go across the chasis to suit the wellbody.
Will need several people to lift wellbody and to put the fuel filler through.

if ur removing it on the weekend go spray some CRC or FreeIt on the bolts now to make sure they aint siezed.

After lookin at some pics of 04 dual cab trays compared to early gen 3 hilux trays i think ur gonna have alot of drama fitting one the biggest issue is going to be the shape around the rear wheel arch.

On the newer model the tray part of the wheel arch doesnt go down as far.
I'd be willing to bet the mounting points are diffrent aswell.

Have u considered just making a flat tray for it?

I would be considering more a 2005/06+ well body. Not sure if I want to go flat tray just yet. May need to test fit. I don't mind if it is a little larger. Anyone got overall dimensions?

05 is the same as current shape and its completly diffrent shape tray, they are alot higher in the sides and wider.

Also the current shape tray has a flat front edge to it where as the older shape tray the wheel arch is right at the front and lines up with that small wedge taken out the back of the cab itself. meaning the wheel arch is not even gonna come close to lining up.

Why are u wanting to put a late model tray on? been given one for cheap or summin?

Yeah but the 1996 doesn't have a wedge taken out, its flat faced too..?

Hence I was thinking of bolting one on. :D

There is a cheap one for sale, and I need to put a wellbody on, or put a flat tray. Was thinking a cheap 2005 wellbody could be worth it. May need to do a test fit...

Edit: I think cos mine has a newer tray I'm mixing it up a tad with that whole notch taken out thing (which doesn't bother me anyway)... may just need to do a test fit!

How much is 'a cheap one?' Reason I ask is that I have 4 brand new ones I took off some utes last year to fit flat trays and have no idea what they are worth.

Seen this done heaps of times on minitrucks usually with extra cab but would probably work for others aswell doesn't look too bad but you are left with a bigger gap between back of cab and the tray.

James i think ur refereing to a early 2000 tray on a 90's hilux that leaves the gap between the tray.
Shifted is talkin about putting a current model tray on a 90's shape lux. I dont think it will work and more to the fact will looking really bad as they are completly diffrent shaped vehicles.

I'm not sure about if it will work (like you mentioned, holes may not line up) but due to flat face etc. it may be ok with minor mods for bolting it down.

Looks don't bother me. :)

But I was inquiring as the red Hilux I have has a fucked tailgate - am thinking that once the tailgate falls apart I will just put a flat wooden tray or something neat and tidy on the rear. :)
