A full turbo back exhaust would come in sections - one long piece of pipe would be impractical

An entire HKS system would involve buying the front pipe, mid pipe, and rear section.

You can buy just the mid and rear but obviously wont give as much gains.

Rear muffler section would most likely be rear diff back

Mid pipe would be from there to the cats at the front of the car

Entire cat back would be those two combined

Front pipe is off the turbo down

HKS Exhaust system and components

The HKS Legamax Premium Muffler for the Lancer Evolution X features a fully polished, stainless steel 304 muffler and piping mated to dual 110mm rolled Titanium tips. Legamax Premium is available as a rear muffler section and is designed to bolt-on to the factory mid pipe. Initial testing with the rear section produced 5 RWHP. An optional SUS304 center pipe complements the HKS Evo X Legamax Premium Muffler and is now available through Authorized HKS Dealers. A full 75mm cat-back exhaust system has completed development and is will arrive to the North American market February 2009.

HKS Front Pipe

For maximum exhaust flow and quicker turbo spool up, HKS offers a 65 mm SUS 304 front pipe for the Evo X. The mandrel bent front pipe is a bolt-on application that mounts to the stock turbo and will also bolt on to the HKS or factory center pipe. The HKS front pipe does not remove any catalytic converters but is intended FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY.

Cat = catalytic converter.

Front pipe and dump pipe not always same, no. It would depend on the supplier/fabricator.

Ahh sorry I was skim reading..

IMO a downpipe and dump pipe might often be the same thing (not that you asked) but as for front and down pipe being the same - again it would really depend on the kit you are purchasing.

Having a less restrictive exhaust will increase boost efficiency and powerz - DO IT!

My friend told me if I wanted the best out of my exhaust I should install the downpipe, midpipe, cat along with the rear muffler of course.

Does the cat come with the HKS Legamax Premium? Or do I buy that seperate aswell, and is a tune necasarry after installing all these modifications?

kh92
21-03-2011, 06:36 PM
Oh and no ones answered me, is midpipe and centrepipe the same?

SK

mid = middle

centre = middle

so i would assume they are the same

I thought so too, anyway still needing to know if I will need a tune after installing downpipe midpipe cat and rear muffler

Dont worry about fucking with the exhaust system too much everyone i have spoken to thus far has said not to worry there is minimal gains from it and the whole front setup manifolds and front pipes ect are pretty dardy and bang on from factory unless ur going to be changing turbos n shit and the gains are 1-2 kw here n there catback is all you need thats comming from both TMR and Willall racing...

IMO call TMR over in melbourne and ask about there packages think they said they use LF performance to do some of there stuff from memory if i was keeping my X i was going to go for the 270kw package through them for around 3k and claimed 0-100 in 4secs and still keep all my warranties which iss essentially a reflash and some minor exhaust work to the rear section of the car and comes out sounding quite nice and not too loud.. having been over to the workshop to look late last year very much reccomend this option

kh92
21-03-2011, 07:25 PM
I just wanted my car to sound abit different from how it is now, but seeing as the 270kw package comes with the TMR enhanced exhaust too i'll prob look more into it now aswell, any idea how I (in perth) could get the TMR 270kw package?

JBAE

Call them up have a chat but essentially take ur ecu and I think exhaust send to them they tune modify and return, or I think you can take it to LF and have them do it or even some other shop I'll find link and post later when home

Recommend TMR for the work, the quality is fantastic. I've had the 300kw upgrade performed which is a touch expensive but still retains the factory warranty in a way. Just had to send the ECU to TMR and wait for it and the full exhaust to come back then fit it all up and she's sweet. I will be doing a showcase thread some time soon.

Ring them and ask for Alan Heaphy, he will be able to help you out with any questions.

Will look something similar to this... Pictures help explain all.

The diagram here shows a pretty funky front/dump pipe arrangement though.

Mind if I ask you what the 300kw package set ya back and how you managed to keep factory warranty?

Including labour it was $5800. I had the work done through the dealer and got it cheaper as I buy a few company cars.

Keeping factory warranty with that upgrade is a grey zone. If something goes wrong it won’t throw a code where as if you had a local tuning shop tune it with say Ecutek etc it would throw a code if an error occurred.

Basically Mitsubishi cant prove the TMR 300kw caused said error if one was to occur so you are covered, they also recommend going through TMR for obvious reasons.

kh92

Apparently TMR doesn't void your warranty because they work with Mitsubishi.

@ Stealthed, How long did it take them to send you back your ecu, and how does that 3" exhaust sound?

Stealthed
22-03-2011, 10:03 AM
TMR are just like any aftermarket performance shop, yes they do work with Mitsubishi and offer a factory enhanced car for sale by the dealer (247kw Bathurst Edition) But anything above that is still a grey area from what I was told with my dealer, they just recommend TMR due to the relationship and like I said since it won’t throw a code.

It took just over 2 weeks for all the work to be done/sent as the ECU was air freight but the full turbo back exhaust was road freight. I chose to have a larger 4" twin muffler. Thing sounds like a weapon and pulls like a 13 year old boy.

the ecu gets tuned for the exhaust system too am i right? i will think about doing this as I hate having things shipped, packaged, sent away etc.

btw this mean the car wouldn't be moving out of the garage for 2-3 weeks am i right

kh92

4" is huge.. and i dont even see it on the tmraustralia.com site

I've had a few mates get Kermit Engineering exhausts on their 10s... sound mint, and reasonable gains. TMR is the best option though. I'll never buy an off the shelf exhaust system again.

Stealthed
22-03-2011, 12:40 PM
Yea I wanted 4" to be unique, as you can get the standard 3" or have them make up a larger one, and yes when the exhaust goes on the car it needs to be re-tuned, it's part of the package as the tune changes the timing and other things in the engine + with the exhaust to achieve 300kw. It's technically just over 300kw but it is marketed at 300.

Ultimately it is up to you, if you like your warranty then try speaking with TMR if not, then read some other builds and speak to a local tuning shop, if you go with a local tuning shop at least you can go mental on it :D

kh92
22-03-2011, 05:58 PM
wait.. your saying when i get the ECU and the exhaust back, and install them, I need to go and tune again for the exhaust?

Or is the ECU already tuned for the exhaust thats sent with the ECU?

Just call TMR for any info if you choose to go down their path. Otherwise phone up anyone who offers the EcuTek upgrade and speak to them.

I'm pretty sure Race Torque do the ecutek work, have a look into it if you want to do plenty of things to the Evo

Have you not thought of joining a more evo orientated forum , such as EvoOz or perthevo ???

Simple , if car has no ECU , its not going anywhere, unless pushed or towed

Yeah, join EvoOz so you can join in on the circle jerk. Then you will learn how to modify your car like every other Evo owner in the country.

Do yourself a favour. Tell the pingpingpingpings here giving you shit about asking too many questions to get fucked and keep asking questions, or take the advice already given to you. Antilag is about performance, EvoOz is more about what colour cardigan is the best to wear when driving your Evo, and the optimal Evo setup for picking up your groceries.

quick jump in have you not thought about ecuflash? fuk ecutek and tmr. all the software and definition files for AUDM evo x's are complete and every parameter can be changed and remapped. theres a few tuners in Perth who do it or you can tune it yourself. warranty work is still a grey area. if something goes wrong reflash the stock rom and Mitsubishi wont know shit.

Plus no need to send your ecu away. Minimum cost is $220 for the OpenPort 2 cable and you can reflash till your hearts content

I'd steer clear from the HKS exhausts. All the evo ones I've seen have a 2" ID rear muffler that's very restrictive. Ecu is as simple as choosing a capable workshop and getting a tune.
