hey guys, first off, i dont have a great deal of experience with turbos so sorry if i come off a bit noobish, im currently rebuilding a 1987 mk2 golf gti 2 door (1 of about 10 2 doors in aus apparently) atm it has a 1.8l, 4 cyl 8 valve lump in it, it needs to come out so i can smooth the engine bay and get it painted, while its out im gonna re build the motor and turbo it, not chasing big numbers or low et's just something with a bit more poke, iv sourced pretty much everything im gonna need, im just a bit lost with the turbo side of things, the one im looking at is available in a few different specs, compressor housing A/R .50, turbine housing A/R .38, .48 or .63 im assuming its something to to with the size of inlets/outlets? what does it mean exactly? how does it effect the way the turbo behaves? does it sound like it will suit my engine? as for the blow off valve question, what ones dont sound like shit? haha hks ssq's shit me to tears, sounds like something off need for speed... sorry for sounding like a dumb shit :/
cheers,
tom

tom,
figure out how much power you want, then look at factory turbo cars with the same size engine.
from there try to match the factory turbo specs, win!

i have no idea how much power :/ dont really care either, just dont want it to blow up haha. but really id be hoping for around 150-170 ish atw with responce and more midrange in mind, the turbo im looking at is rated to 380, its their mid size turbo and is 50 bucks cheaper than the next size down (on sale) so i figured why not, if i do get power hungry, rip the engine back out, new pistons and con rods etc and more boost then go pull bitches haha could some one explaint how the compressor/housing specs relate to real world? smaller A/R = faster spool? bigger = laggier, more hp? etc...

^^ Either that (magic's post) or there are guides to be read on turbo selection. I've got a book here on it but I'm sure there are some online resources.
As for the BOV, get a nice plumbed-back option and it won't sound like shit.

Ask on vwwatercooled.org.au if you haven't already.
Loads of VW specialists on there - including Wade (used to work at golfwagen, not sure if he still does) who has just put a 1.8T S3 engine in his mk2.
I don't know enough about the earlier VW engines to comment on the turbo selection, but I can guarantee you'll get a good response from the mk2 guys on vww.
MK2 love.

The car has not been started with the MegaSquirt yet, but there are a lot of guys in the US and Canada that are raving about it, it's just a matter of finding someone who will tune it.
I was talking to one of the techs at Uni about it the other day though and he suggested Glenn Campbell @ BYE Performance, but from what I've read and heard from others the tuning software is incredibly simple to use though so no doubt most tuners will be able to tune it once they've had a quick once-over of the software.

Ahhh, was searching for 'lumpy megasquirt perth' to no avail. :(
So Glenn Campbell = Lumpy, got it. I'm assuming he is good at what he does then eh?

been on those forums for a while now, before i was on here any way, you need about 10k to drop the 20v turbo into a mk2, the patch loom with immobiliser defeat cost about 1800 alone! this is my third golf, still have a 2 door mk1 in the shed too :/ as for all the turbine and wheel trim specs, i found all the info on the garrett website, really useful bits of info on there, for someone like me anyway... i was hoping to run low enough boost for the time being so i could still run the standard ecu (digifant, really basic early efi shit) but megasquirt was gonna be my first option, pretty sure theyve just brought out a new one

What turbo are you looking at? A 2860rs would go well I would think. As for BOVs, Greddy RS is nice, otherwise if you want to save on costs you could buy a BOSCH recirc valve (same as they use on Audi/Porsche .etc).

im looking at an spa turbo 5250... keeping cost down is good but i want it to make all the right sounds in all the right places haha, i just want a nice subtle sounding bov, nothing bullshit loud and nothing that resembles a hks super sequential, i hate that high pitch whistleing noise they make

An S15 T28BB turbo should be sufficient i would of thought.

the problem is finding a manifold with the correct flange, 99% of manifolds available for golfs use t3 flanges and the only ones iv found with t25 are cheap ass nasty ebay ones, if i could find a good quality one with that would give me alot more local/cheaper turbo options

Never heard of a SPA Turbo. 5250 I would think represents 52mm compressor inducer/50mm exhaust inducer ?
It would be pretty similar to this I woudl think, in T3 0.48a/r - http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tp&Product_Code=GRT-TBO-001&Category_Code=GRT
A cheap option.... Holset HX30 - http://cgi.ebay.com/Compressor-Racing-Comp-R-HX30W-Holset-450bhp-T3-4-/260752432778?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb60e5e8a

quite well known in europe and america, have a massive range of manifolds etc, the specs of the turbo are in the op, comp housing A/R .50 and turbine available in a/r .38 .48 and .63

That doesn't mean a lot. Its the Inducer/Exducer sizes you want of the compressor and turbine wheels.
A 0.63A/R on a 80mm turbine wheel will spool far slower then a 1.06A/R on a 60mm.... for comparisons sake.
Either that or the lbs/min that the turbo flows. Is SPA turbo the same SPA company that makes the gauges?

t3 flange, an RB20 turbo would probably suffice and super cheap

slightly off centre but i run a plumback bov in my car, from infront of plenum bov plumbed back into intake pipe. you can hear it go "PWAH" if you build a little boost, but if you are flat out changing at full song it gets drowned out. no highpitch gayness and if you want to show the bov off just change at ~4000rpm.
all of the good turbo options have been mentioned really, however i am a believer that it is all in the cam choices. matching the right cam(s) to the right turbo will give the best performance and the best response. i spose there would be pleanty of off the shelf examples in europe for your engine.
