View Full Version : where to get piping

Need some stronger piping other than PVC as it keeps exploding, im no rocket scientist hence why only 1 of 3 rockets left the ground before exploding into a million pieces.

mate said there is compressor pvc or something? obviously want to keep the weight down but also want to double our sparkler count. (last one was around the 700 mark) and pipe we were using was supposed to be rated to 3000psi? not sure if the heat would of played a huge part in them going bang..

Wrap the pipes with a couple of layers of duct tape

wont that make it just explode more?

unlikely anything could explode more than that.

and no, it should deffinately offer more strength. preferably get some really strong tape with the webbing, that will offer more tensile strength and resist it expanding.

there is a pvc pipe we use out on the farm for water mains called 'blue brute'

its fucking strong as hell, but might be to heavy for what you want to do with it...?

i want more vids!

edit:

was just thinking if you're concerned with the heat inside the pipe, maybe drill some small holes towards the nose cone to allow the heat to escape? (heat rises)

wouldnt enough holes in the top to allow heat/pressure to escape defeat the purpose of a rocket?

was thinking of some light metal pipe, with screw on lids on both ends and a hole in the bottom. 1400 sparklers.... has to go somewere right?

so it can blast off into the ground ?

isnt that more commonly known as a pipe bomb?

so what your saying is its just going to explode again?

Use some thin tin sheet to line the inside of the pipe, that should hold it together. I believe Mr yarnold had a nice experience with maxing out the structural integrity of pvc stormwater pipe.

ok that sounds easy enough, im tempted to go straight to a copper pipe or something, will this still need to be lined?

Aren't model rockets usually made with that thick as fuck cardboard? Some of that lined with a few layers of foil to stop it burning maybe? Keen for SPLOSIONS!

if you filled it with ballbearings and nails, they would absorb the heat, and stop it being transferred to the housing. in theory it should stop it from exploding.

I think the top is failing first not the body.

How are you sealing the nose?

How is the bottom end sealed?

Niva

nose is a pvc cap with the pvc gglue, then heaps of duct tape.

mr_mike

put a couple pop rivets in the side to hold the cap on aswell as the glue. that still definetly makes it look like its blowing out the top.

solved the explosion issue, this time we used poly filler for the bottom which gave way after about 0.0004 of a second. is still in tact so gonna try again tomorrow

dont sparklers leave a molten mess behind when they burn? probably just melting the shit out of it!

What sort of PVC pipe are you using? Stormwate is thin as shit but you get different classes of PVC. The four classes are 6, 9, 12 and 18. The OD is the same but the wall thickness changes. Most retic mainlines (commercial) are class 9 or 12. All retic fittings are class 18. For all you need get a length of class 18. You will have to order it in as very few people stock it but it will be the way forward.

Even class 12 would be fine I dare say
