Hey Guys,
Im considering getting a Road bike and getting back into to cycling again.

I was pretty heavily into it when i was younger but then discovered Woman, beer,Cars etc.

Im looking too spend about 1k tops on a new bike. I need something too suit a 182cm 110kg ride (yeah im pretty hefty but thats half the point of getting back into it)

Im considering these bikes:
http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles/trek/road/trek-1-2/balcatta/wa/100164943

thishttp://www.bikeforce.com.au/bicycles/orbea/road/orbea-aqua-dama-t23/docklands/vic/100195758

and this

http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles/merida/road/merida-road-race-901/balcatta/wa/100268216

Im totaly out of touch with components and groupsets etc but basically looking for strong enough too support me and reliable enough to get me too and from my work once my fitness is up too it (25km trip)

any suggestions/comments/hookups in the bike game glady appreciated.

cheers
Luke

Any of those bikes will do you fine, and as you break/wear out shit, just go to chainreactioncycles.co.uk and get baller gear to replace it with...

Buy the pedals and shoes from CRC or Wiggle, just make sure you get your sizing right.

I'd be considering second hand bikes also - have a look on the TriWA forums and RoadGrime.

I've got an OCR3 that I bought a few years ago - $1500 bike I got for $800... Then have spent maybe that much on new parts (mostly sets of tyres)... I'm not exactly as keen a cyclist as some people on here, and don't know much about current models. But personally I like to use shimano gear, and most bikes around your price range are going to have at least mid-level shimano gearsets and brakes. Don't get factory wheels though, if you smash your first set, get them locally and custom built.

And don't be weak. Get clips.

If you know exactly what size you need then buy on-line. If you don't then go to a shop, you will regret saving a couple hundred bucks if its the wrong size and you have to change it 3 months later...Same for shoes, you really need to try them on.
I would aim for Shimano 105 components at a minimum.

TBE Osborne Park is best shop in Perth.

I cant ride without clipless, dunno about clips tho....the word death trap comes too mind....:)

Nah, once you've been riding a few days with clips, you won't go back. I've got a fairly cheap set of shimano pedals and shoes - that I absolutely thrash - and I love them.

Cellbikes.com.au also do some decent cheaper bikes.. Frames aren't too special but the gearing is a step better than some other bikes around the same price range. As for pedals, wiggle or eBay.. Cheapest r540 pedals you can find then find some shoes.. TBE have Shimano r086 for $89 at the moment. Decent starting shoe.

Riding 25km is actually pretty easy.. I'm unfit as and managed to jump on and ride to and from work ~25-27km.

I picked up a used bike with tiagra gearset to see if I was going to get into riding and it's not bad at all. That said, having stepped up to a new ultegra bike the difference is very noticeable. So as BAS said, I would aim for 105 as it's a nice medium that you won't regret 3 months down the track

I think we are talking about the same thing. Shoes + cleats +clipless pedals = win.

Clip pedals, with there death trap plastic cage are a no go!

Now too get bike fit again:)

Anybody know where i can pick up the manual for the MiniFree computer farked if i can find it online??

Nice pickup. Getting fit again? I found that to be the easy part. I worked my way up to riding 50+kms @ approx 25km/h in no time going from a BMX.

Now that I have done my ride (or only have 1 day left of it), I will need some motivation to keep riding. Anyone interested in group rides?

I like the sound of AL rides!
Saturday morning - ~6:30AM rides departing from somewhere in the city?
I'm keen to stop by Joe's for bread and coffee beforehand.

Quite a few maps to run. Last weekend I did a map similar to the GreatBikeRide - going around UWA, through Mosman Bay (up that ridiculous hill behind the lawn bowls joint), through Freo, coming back past Point Walter & Applecross.
Was around 50km

^ Yeah I'm in Wilson, although I need to get to sleep earlier for morning rides like that... Hopefully the office is shifting location soon, and a requirement for them is a shower block, due to a few of us here being into MTB etc and want to ride to work.

i ride from home in gossy to Port beach every sat morning just a slow leisurely ride as my father in law plods along with me and a few short 6 to 7 k rides in the evenings during the week and have lost a few kilo in the last few weeks
think i need to look for a road bike as the GT's gearing isnt all that good for roads

Can easily swap to a road cassette if need be. I used to run Road cassettes on my DH, as long as it stays on the 9 or 8 speed rear setup.

Thinking of these pedals over the R540's. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28050

Figure SPD's would give me a better choice of "normal" shoes and the platform would probably come in handy once in a while?

thoughts?

Unless you plan on doing a great amount of walking when you cycle, I wouldn’t bother with shoes with more conventional walking soles. Just get dedicated road cycling shoes. They are fit for purpose and will serve you well.
