as above if anyone knows anything about training courses to do a cert IV in oc health and safety or if NEBOSH means anything to you im chasing info on tracking down a good course provider that delivers in BLOCK form... would be muchly appreciated so far ive found a handful of places one over seas and 2-3 in australia course prices are usually 3-4.5k so seeing what else is available and if anything is cheaper thats around.

I am in OSH - tomorrow is my last day.

We use IFAP, they are about 4k for 10 days.

Remind me tomorrow to check our other providers.

is the IFAP course a NEBOSH one?

TJ

Isnt NEBOSH U.K based?

I highly doubt any Australian provider supply training to Australian and ISO standards will do UK training man.

I can check though.

yeh NEBOSH is an internationally recognised one as far as i know and everyone ive spoken to thus far offshore has told me to go for that due to the nature of offshore work ect

I reckon if a normal course is around 4k your going to pay a premium for o/s competency.

Ring IFAP tomorrow and ask. We just had two guys do theirs here

I've spent over 10k with IFAP, name ain't so epic anymore. My favourite about them is how HARD it is to fail, especially fire-fighting.

/off topic.

On topic.

Blaa, wouldn't your prospective company organise the coarse for you? Even a recruitment agency would of pointed you in the right direction, or are you just applying for something else?

I made the mistake of doing the STCW '95 and all associated tickets/coarses (TBOSET/HUET, Advanced Fire, International First aid) of my own accord in an attempt to get work faster, 2 years later I'm still a fucking butcher. Hopefully you get something sooner than me!

May be off topic but i did Cert 4 in OHS externally through tafe. May be an option for you. I did it whilst working construction in Port Headland and if you are reasonably smart you can do the entire unit in about a week.

i got the bosiet, as i work from North West shelf to Bass Straight.
so i need the cold water immersion training.

people just working up North tend to get the TBOSIET course paid by their work, as its significantly cheaper

14-03-2011, 07:38 PM
Yesh, I only have TBOSIET :( But if I get work, I'll let them pay for it this time!

Please keep me up to date with who you work for. If you are ever in charge of OH&S, I don't want to be there.

Is there that big a difference between Aus recognised to International standards in oh&s coarse?? Im currently doing my cert 4 in TAE this week and wanting to do my cert 4 in oh&s within the next few months. Back injury has me wanting to get off of tools and into this field for abit. I know of a Queensland mob running a 4 day block coarse late may, $1400 and has a couple of external assignments to be done afterwards.

Surely an aus ohs coarse should have a fair bit of overlap into an international standard coarse... maybe there are bridging/rpl coarses to bring up from aus to international standard

ERMS - it takes 5 days to clear in that system if EVERYTHING is good ... you need to supply 3 contactable refs from the past 5 years ... current / 3rys agp / 5 years ago ... if they call one and they dont answer ... BAM right to the bottom of the pile and you get boucned ... and have to resubmit and start the process again.

Tell you refs to answer the phone when it rings - that is the only thing that holds you up.

Is the IFAP one not too bad? I may be getting sent to do one, depending on how many new reps are required at work.
I did bosiet with them and went pretty well, apart from getting the small window in the chopper every time :)

I did my cert IV through IFAP. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be going back to do my diploma and a few other courses. You pay alot more than other places (provided that you arent being funded by your company) but you definately get what you pay for in networking, membership and course material.

Whats the difference between doing them at IFAP and at TAFE?

A girl at work did hers through central tafe. Comparison below

IFAP
Price: $4,200
Contact time: 10 Days
Lunch/morning tea provided
Information books for each section of the Cert IV
Free networking events for IFAP alumni
Free IFAP membership

I found this to be a very structured and supportive learning environment with continual communication between IFAP even after the contact time had finished.

TAFE
Price: Approx $1000
Contact Time: 4 Days
No course material
No lunches provided
No networking events or membership

Girl at work didnt hand her assignments in until 1 month past the cut off date, waited another 3 weeks to hear back from the teacher saying that he had been away and he would get back to her with results. I dont think she has heard back yet and that was 2 months ago. Seems very laid back and not very structured.

But at the end of the day, if youre committed to achieving your cert IV then it doesnt matter who you go through. Both will give you the qualification you need to get a job in health and safety but in my oppinion only one will give you thorough and quality education.

JBAE

4k!!! Fuck that!

Go to aveling or trainwest or if you can track down a guy called David birbeck where eve he is working now days use them, nothing against IFAPs quality but for 4k unless you are baller and get a lap dance

stumps.

Didn't pick a 3k price difference for similar time. Is lunch from Rockpool or what?

It's been touched on before in a different thread I think...but does anyone know, of the majority of people that do these courses, roughly how many are for the qualification running alongside their jobs, and how many to be in the OHS field like an advisor??

Ash-u-lee
12-07-2012, 11:43 AM
As i said, if you just want the certificate, you can get it for much cheaper! But that was my experience anyway! Even better if your company pays for it ;)

Everyone except me and another guy in my course had been working in safety (either as an advisor, consultant or manager) for years but they needed to formalise their experience with the qualification, their companies had paid for them to do it. Im doing my safety qualifications to be able to move into an advisors position once i gain enough field experience with my current company.

A friend of mine in recruiting said that if you want to get into safety, do courses such as:
Working at Heights
Confined Space
D&A testing
Gas Testing
Senior First Aid
Fire Warden

And having those tickets under your belt as well as your certificates/diplomas will set you in front when it comes to job applications.
