nah, i must admit my cupboards are pretty bare at the moment, so im going to start "walking the walk" ,it definetly does pay to have plenty of food stocked up for emergencies like power outages and shit. I'm not one of those people who goes to a liquer store to stock up on booze before a cyclone, i make sure i can eat for a week if shit turns bad.
I look at it this way, we had the floods over in qld down to nsw & vic, this affected a fair bit of farm land. farming down south hasnt been going that well recently either, we've had floods in carnarvan that affected the price & availability of fruit/veg.
wouldnt be asking too much for a cyclone to totally fuck up kunnunara and it's fruit/food production would be affected too.
Now i know this sounds all paranoid, but hey it doesnt hurt to be prepared.
Always used to take a 20lt's of water and food when i used to drive to remote minesites when i lived up north, Just incase....

I dont think that's quite neccesary for us. were not trillions of dollars in debt and have a reserve bank just printing money, zimbabwe style.
if the shit going on in the middle east doesnt sort out soon, you CAN expect food & goods to go up though. It's a given due to large amount of transport that is done via trucks in australia and im sure you know what they run on...

apparently having problems cooling a reactor after shutdown.
<object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6GJ8zXchM58&rel=0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6GJ8zXchM58&rel=0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>
Under Japanese law, authorities are mandated to issue a nuclear emergency if the cooling mechanisms fail, and they did exactly that for the first time in Japan’s history after it became clear that attempts to cool the reactor were “not going as planned”.
Fukushima No. 1 is one of the largest nuclear plants in the world and has eight separate units located on the site. Thankfully, so far there’s no evidence of any radioactive leakage.
“Regarding our nuclear power facilities, so far no radioactive material has been leaked to the outside. Given the situation, an emergency disaster response has been set up as myself as a head. We will secure the safety of the people of Japan. We ask the people of Japan to act calmly,” said Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
The Tokyo Electric Power Co says it faces a shortage of electrical capacity to cool its reactors, but as Time Magazine points out, “The reactors at Fukushima should will have multiple, redundant safety features installed to help cool reactor cores and prevent meltdown so its unclear what the company means by a “shortage of capacity.”

they were talkin to a financial analyst on the morning show he was saying that while it is a bad thing because its japan they have strict building codes etc so damage would of been alot worse if it was somewhere like the US. Japan will recover quickly.
He also said this is a good thing for Australia as Japan is going to need our resources to rebuild.

12-03-2011, 11:18 AM
Problem is that it is going to take 6-12 months to simply clear away the crap before they rebuild. During that time zero need for our resources.
There well over 1000 dead now I believe. There so many missing also.
Nuclear radiation will also now have to be released to avoid total failure.
Any one that thinks nuclear power is the way forward for Australia have a look at this now .....

Fukushima nuclear plant does not have a combustible graphite core like Chernobyl. A total meltdown should flow into underground containment.
Radiation leaked into the atmosphere in the steam has a incredibly small half-life that is measured in seconds.
Good news.
Even after an earthquake, and tsunami, it hasn't gone into meltdown. Nuclear power is clearly safer than the media would have us believe.

General word around the webs is that they will kill the reactor so shouldnt explode, but never be useful again.
Stuck between a rock and hard place really. You would wonder why they would build so many reactors in a place prone to huge quakes and tsunamis but I guess there isn't to much choice when you have such a huge population, little space and already bad pollution levels.
I know it's only words, but hope all goes well with them man. It's times like this when 200km just doesn't seem far enough.

There's always a potential that if they fuck up, there may be a nuclear tragedy. As opposed to the localised damage the tsunami made, a radioactive cloud can spread across the globe.

Ryan, the core reaction was shut down when it happened. There is a chance of the fuel rods melting, yes, but there is no chance of a full scale disaster occuring from it. If it was going to go chernobyl, it would have been within the first 45 minutes of the event.

They never said it was gonna be like Chernobyl, that was a scale 7 disaster, this is only a 4, so nowhere near. Can't comment on the rest, I'm just an armchair nuclear expert lol. Nevertheless, it may kill a lot less people than the tsunami, but even if it does kill 'only' 500 people, it's still a disaster.

Oh look, the 20 people already killed in the reactor 1 explosion is a disaster - no doubt.
Its just a shame the media is focusing on it so much, and unfortunately giving the anti-nuclear protesters more ill-advised fuel for their ill-advised fire.
I think it's a real shame for the poor bastards in Lybia that this has happened though - they were so close to huge international support, and I fear they're going to be pushed out of the spotlight now.
A natural disaster is a horrible thing - especially on this scale - but your own government killing you and your family is a whole other horrific kettle of fish.
In saying that though: Far out.. Three and four storey buildings going completely underwater..

Radiation is getting worse and worse...
The radiation level at Japan's troubled nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture shot up to 8217 micro sievert per hour temporarily this morning after an explosion was heard at its No.2 reactor, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.
Kyodo news agency reported the level as of 8.31pm local time was more than eight times the 1000 micro sievert level to which people are usually exposed in one year
Sounds like it is so high, in one hour you get 8 times more radiation than you get in one full year. Not good.

Apparently a third explosion on another reactor has happened.
http://blogs.forbes.com/jeremybogaisky/2011/03/14/breaking-another-explosion-at-japanese-nuclear-plant/
Although Tokyo Electric said it also continued to deal with cooling system failures and high pressures at half a dozen of its 10 reactors in the two Fukushima complexes, fears mounted about the threat posed by the pools of water where years of spent fuel rods are stored.
At the 40-year-old Fukushima Daiichi unit 1, where an explosion Saturday destroyed a building housing the reactor, the spent fuel pool, in accordance with General Electric’s design, is placed above the reactor. Tokyo Electric said it was trying to figure out how to maintain water levels in the pools, indicating that the normal safety systems there had failed, too. Failure to keep adequate water levels in a pool would lead to a catastrophic fire, said nuclear experts, some of whom think that unit 1’s pool may now be outside.
“That would be like Chernobyl on steroids,” said Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear engineer at Fairewinds Associates and a member of the public oversight panel for the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, which is identical to the Fukushima Daiichi unit 1.
People familiar with the plant said there are seven spent fuel pools at Fukushima Daiichi, many of them densely packed.
Gundersen said the unit 1 pool could have as much as 20 years of spent fuel rods, which are still radioactive.

I think you'll find the free media will be very lucky to start getting information from now on.
Plus what reporter would volunteer to go into a nuclear radiated area?

The japanse have nuclear power down to a fine art, I very much doubt it will be anything like chernobyl.
Media is just doing their thing.

The fires in the waste storage pond are reportedly releasing ionising raditation @ 400mSv/hr, so not extremely dangerous yet...
I wouldn't want to be there right now though.

So the fires have melted the old fuel rods (because of inadequate water supply to the pools)? Howcome the pools are not contained in some massive building? And why are the fuel rods kept in a pool- is there no other way to dispose of them once they have been fully utilised?

from what i know about nuclear power plants and i'll admit it is very limited, this is the biggest issue regarding nuclear power it is clean power but the spent fuel rods take something like 2 million years to break down to a safe level so they need somewhere to store them.
remember a couple years ago all the abo's and greenies were getting fireup cos either the US or England wanted to store used fuel rods in the middle of the desert where there is no one around for a million km's.
^^^^
where there is no tectonic activity either.

Do you want to know the sad truth as to where these pools are located?
In the top-half of the reactor buildings.
The parts that exploded.

Stop the hype... There is no chain reaction happening at the plant!
No chain reaction = No big bang
The worst that can/will happen is some radiation will be leaked causing little harm or damage to surrounding areas

There's no chain reaction happening in the reactor.
However the spent fuel ponds are on fire.

No, obviously not. Else it wouldn't be in a waste pond.
However burning uranium would have just an effective area of contamination as a reactor meltdown.

Yesterday, it wasn't an issue worth worrying about. Today, it is starting to look like it is.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing information it had received from Japanese authorities at 0350 GMT, said dose rates of up to 400 millisievert per hour have been reported at the Fukushima power plant site.
It did not give details or comparisons on the radiation level but exposure to over 100 millisieverts a year is a level which can lead to cancer, according to the World Nuclear Association.

Why mention chain reaction? Obviously it isn't the danger/problem/concern here at all. No one us detonating any nukes, and the reactor is shut down.
Contamination is the problem. Blowing up the shut down reactor and letting it all out is like the good old dirty bomb terrorists would like to use.
No fancy boom and mushroom cloud, but just as deadly in the long term.
So glad we're far away from there, hopefully the winds won't bring any down our way.
FFS you idiots have NO FUCKING IDEA!!! the chain reaction cannot and will not occur due to the failure and current in active state of the flux capicitors with in the facility! with out these there is no danger of a reaction!

What does the latest explosion mean for the reactor?
The blast at Unit 2 this morning AEDT follows hydrogen explosions at Unit 1 on Saturday and Unit 3 on Sunday. Water levels have dropped precipitously inside Unit 2, twice leaving the uranium fuel rods completely exposed and raising the threat of a meltdown. The plant's owner, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPO), said the explosion occurred near the suppression pool in the reactor's containment vessel. The company had just minutes before revealed that the containment vessel had been damaged and warned that there could possibly be serious radiation leaks. It later said the fact that the radiation level had not jumped, indicated the vessel had not sustained damage such as a hole. There is a fire burning at Unit 4 at the plant, officials confirmed, however a Japanese minister said there were no fuel rods contained in that location. There are six units at the plant. Radiation levels have risen considerably, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan says. Mr Kan has told people within 30km of the plant to stay indoors.

I've been chilling in Seoul the last 10 days, pending a trip to Japan. The Koreans and Japanese here are all pretty calm about the risk of radioactive contamination. Can't believe it. No looting in Japan either, what a great society! Half price amenities from local supermarkets and free items from many vending machines.
If the wind blows towards the Korean peninsula this place will be terrible + China also.
Booking a flight out now. I can't help here & like my DNA in tact.
