View Full Version : need help choosing
yooo, i need help. im looking at getting another 4wd , a newish model and at around the 25k+- mark , now the things i like to do is go beach fishing/camping and tow my mates boat aswell , hopefully do exmouth trips with the boat sometime this year so i need a capable 4bee, im not really interested in anthing thats IFS so iv narrowed it down to a couple , so if anoyne can give me opinions on vehicles this would much be appreciated or on engine choice.
jeep wrangler i think it is but the 4 door one , in the 6 cylinder model
nissan patrol if i can find a 4.2td for this price because i hear the 3L and 2.8 are both rubbish(correct me if im wrong)
100 series land cruiser (not sure which engine choice im leaning towards the v8)
jeep cherokee with the 4.7L v8 i think it is.
im also looking at only manaul cars and the boat is 6 and a half metres and is pretty heavy so i need a good towing capacity.
any help is appreciated cheers

neesan 4.2 is the pick of the bunch

I'd go for the cruiser, not a big fan of the patrol engines and jeeps are kinda girly.
Any reason for wanting solid axles? The navara or hulix would be sweet for what you want.
thinkl you would be pushed to find a pootrol with the 4.2 for 25k but you did say plus so you might find something.
100 series would def be my pick, been proven time and time again how capeable they are in the right hands

you will not find a 100series for under 25, nissan td 42 is your best pick because they are near on bullet proof, but again people ask drug money for them.Have you looked at an td42 80 series land cruiser ?

You WILL find a 100 series for under 25k BUt it will be IFS

Id be trying to find a Nnneeeessaaaan for those dollars, you would be getting a pooper 100 series for that kinda coin.
25k TD42's are out there, one of the guys at the workshop bought his td42 2005 ute for 27.....100km on the clock.
Td42 aka tractor engine is pretty strong, 1hz is also strong in the 100 series but gutless especially if auto and your never going to get a 1hdfte for that coin

I'd go the 4.2TD Hands Down. 4" lift with 35's and an exhaust will see this go over everything (Driver skill involved)
Jeep are rubbish and like your Bro said, finding a 100 series in good condition for under $25K will be a task.
And as asked above, he prolly wants solid axles so he can lift it more than 3"...

Triton, pretty sure they have the highest towing capacity in their class, plus 5 year warrenty with 10 year driveline warrenty cant go wrong

Like the new shape ? Dual cab ? I've got one lots of bendy tritons on the internet due to towing mmm.

Bendy dual cabs are from using airbags to level the back end out from towing heavy loads
Shauno

Yup he said he would be towing a boat so that maybe an option, but tritons are IFS anyway

owned both 3l and 2.8 patrolo, 3Ltd are fine for general towing beach driving. if u put small lift and 33's ull get anywhere went upnorth never got bogged got a auto seemed to be great for beach, (not talking nuts 4wding)
the 2.8 r shambles mines rough as, i went through 2 turbos and woudl regularly bounce round on the heat guage, so i ditched it and put a n/a cammed rb30 in. and it chops offroad and can tow a car piece of piss. no lag uses same mount of fuel as the 2.8. u can pick 2.8's up for cheap and drop rb20's to 26's in piece of piss easy for under 20k.

any vehicle thats overloaded with airbags in the back will bend a chassis, i mentioned it on here before a GU trayback we had at work from the mines about 20,000km and the back half of the chassis was bent over and split where they had overloaded the tray and the airbags had held.

A couple of the MN's that are bent are STILL under GVM, I just generally think dual cab with airbags and heavy loads are going to fail unfortunatly :(
yea only want solid axle in the front , reason beeing i cant install a front locker and i like to do alot of tough 4wding and my mates IFS car was rubbish even with all the fruit. i have seen 100 series for 25-28k so no its not impossible to find. The 4.2TD patrol or 3L patrol is what im leaning towards , im pretty open minded about manaul or auto.
atm if found these just doing a quick search keeping in mind theres alot more out there.

Hey bro, Personally id go with the Cruiser, either TD 80 series, would pick up an immaculate one for that, or even a Sahara with F+R Diff locks as standard? Or 100 series TD Cruiser shouldnt be too much of a problem.
As people have said, Dont bother with the 2.8L Patrol, i believe the 3L dosent have problems anymore, i know they used to have issues with the 3L. GU + 4.2 TD for 25k? Then why not!
Or 100 series TD Cruiser shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Turbo Diesel Cruisers are HDJ100, meaning IFS, can't get factory TD on the solid axle 105 chassis.
To the OP, 100 series with the v8 are all IFS, IMO stretch the budget and buy a HZJ105...
can anyone give me more info weather the 2005 patrol with a 3L will be alright for what i want? or the 4.8L i chucked up i think second or first link? i really like this shape as apposed to the landcruiers

Mates got a 06 3ltd patrol, hasnt had many problems with it except turbo seal. Wouldnt really buy one if i had heavy towing in mind, go for the biggest engine in you're budget. He also was having over heating problems, never towed anything with it either

4.8 is good because you can turbo charge or super charge it later if you like , a little thirsty but still good.Plus most of the 4.8l patrols have solid front and rear axles, no ifs sh*t

The 3lts are really capable offroad and on the highway (fuel economy), the main difference i noticed between the 3 and the 4.2 was overtaking power ie on 100kph dropping it back to 4th to pull out on someone just didnt cut it as it would just rev but go nowhere. You reeealy have to be aware and use the momentum.
Why not hire a 3 ltr for a weekend to see what you think.
I did on my last holiday away when i went with a mate with a 4.2 and went everywhere he did and didnt even bother dumping psi on the beach most nights, and i got heaps better mileage than him.

All Patrols are solid axle front.
my boss has a 3ltr turbo diesel the ZD engine i think it is and what a fuckin piece of shit! sure it tows his huge boat or twin horse float with ease but it is so sluggish its scary to drive if you aint used to it.
I pulled out in traffic put my foot down and it just went nowhere and before i knew it the cars that were 100mtr down the road were right on my arse and braking so as to not hit me.
This one has a chip and 3" exhaust and it only helped slightly.
onroad it obviously sucks but he did tow his boat thats about 15mtr long (ie-fuckin huge) all the way up to Steep Point so offroad it does go well.

all patrol wagons are spring over solid axle with some of the single cab utes being either coil spring or leaf sring sus.
Sure he wasnt getting it confused with a Pathfinder?

WRONG!
New Patrol that's been available for a while now in other markets are independent all round, and it's coming down under shortly.
If you want a patrol, buy it now as the popular 4.2TD is only going to get more expensive.
Just like the 1HD-FT 80 Series, mine is valued at 38k and its a 15yr old 4WD.

ok guys iv been searching around and im pretty keen on something like this , few around i cant seem to find a td one so atm a non turbo would be good because down the track i can always do the turbo upgrade. what do you guys think will thise suit my needs with towing etc , could it handle the long trip to xmouth with a boat and not over heat?
