Hey all, just wanted a 2nd opinion on an issue I'm experiencing..
96 EF Falcon with the normal 4L six cyl..

Since I bought it I've had to keep filling up the coolant resoivor but can't find any leaks.. so I've always kind of suspected the head gasket is leaking somewhere, tho it was never smokey and not down on power..

As of Saturday when I drove it, it started ok but had a dodgy idle, drove fine though..

Saturday night I noticed there was fuck all coolant so I filled it up again.. in fact I put about 1L in and the resoiver level didnt rise (where the fuck was it going!), went to start it, it cranked about 3 times and then wont crank anymore.. figured it was a dead battery so I had the battery on charge overnight and also tried jump starting it, it tries to crank but doesnt succeed in doing a full single crank.. kind of like it has a dead battery (which is fully charged).... or it's hydralocked through a leaky head gasket :(

Opinions? I guess the next step is to take the spark plugs out and try crank it to see if theres any coolant in there?

Cheers :)

Pull the plugs for a laugh, but don't stain the driveway with coolant :)

Shes hydraulic locked, most likley will have bent rod if battery was good enough.

Have a look in the quokka for a low k au motor - can usually get one it a couple of hundred bux, just have to modify the crossmember a little to get it in.

As mine is on LPG, do you guys know if I can whack in a motor that was only running petrol? i.e do they change valves or anything once on LPG?

think if its on straigh LPG then they remove fuel lines

if it was runnings dual youll be right

Dedicated gas changes things!, pull your vapour hose off (the feed line from the converter to the motor) and see if you have coolant, water or stains in there. They are common to swollow a radiators worth of coolant due to the gas converter diaphram failing.

If your ultra lucky, you can remove the plugs, crank it and get the water out of it. See if it will run on 6 with no coolant (briefly of course). If so and you can be sure coolant is coming from the vapour hose, buy a exchange converter and bolt it on.

You might be able to avoid a motor if your battery is pooped, but if it was strong enough the starter motor has enough power to bend rods.

EDIT - i now realise no where has it been said his is dedicated, im a reading expert

Hey Josh, cheers for that.. I probably should have been more clear sorry, mines dual fuel and not dedicated..

I'm assuming those tips above still apply so I'll give them a shot.. worst case though, if I do need to source a motor eventually can I just grab a normal EF/EL one that was running on fuel only?

Just took the plugs out and cranked it over, bulk coolant kept spewing out of cylinder 5 (none of the others).. if I leave it 5-10 mins and crank it again some more comes out..

Couldnt find any coolant traces in the gas vapor line so would I be right in assuming its the head/gasket?

Probably easier to just get a replacement motor than fuck around with head & machining hey?.. sigh

Rip the head off, if its the ehad no the block, smash a reco one on it, save you pulling the block out

Its corroded then, they always do around #5, what you need to do now is rip the head off, and see how far the piston comes up and goes down the bore in relation to the other, non waterlogged cylinders.
