View Full Version : Leaking gearbox oil / driveshaft issue

Had an issue a while ago where the centre bearing mouts in the floorpan were compromised, which forced me to get a single piece driveshaft....the driveshaft I've got appears slightly too short, there's was a bit of slack between the diff and the yoke before I bolted it to the diff. Now there's gearbox oil all over the floorpan, and you can smell it after drives, obviously the gearbox end isn't far enough in.

What are my options here?
New driveshaft altogether, or can I get some kind of spacer for the diff end and use longer bolts ?

Anyone care to recommend a business that does this kind of work?

Was the shaft made to suit that car ?

Bought it off guy over East, had it in his Cefiro no drama's and said he had it custom made.
It wouldn't fit with the ABS diff and did (with about an inch of slack) with the non-ABS diff.

Only difference between my car and his would be mine has an R33 RB20 gearbox - are they shorter than R32 / A31 gearboxes ?

So it was short in his car and he sold it onto you , now you have the issue ..

Measure it up and call Phil @ FinalDrive and have it done right :)

Unless its something as simple as the fact that youve pinched a extension housing seal where the propshaft slides in, Phil Purser is the man for getting that shaft modified to be correct with your diff and box.

There was a very slight leak when the 2 piece was in...and by slight, I a drop would be hanging on the top of the box every 2-3 days (if I cleaned it). I'd assumed it'd become worse since with the 1 piece shaft there was more slack....

How many seals are there at the back of the gearbox ?
I called FinalDrive this afternoon, all Phil said to do was mark on the yoke where the gearbox seal is, and bring it in, ballpark $200 - $400 to extend it if need be, I'll have a crack at replacing seals first and if it's a no go, take it down to FinalDrive and go with that.

Shaft is to short and not sitting in enough . Will fuck seal again and possibly damage rear extension housing bush .

Trick question right ??

No...stupid question maybe. I've never done a rear seal. Is it just 1 or an inside and outside seal or what.
