View Full Version : street/track MX5 car build up
Mr Bender

Hey guys
Time to show off my "hair dressers" street/track car build up.
Ever since my Dad finshed his sports car late last year which is only 640kg and have a blacktop 20v with 130hp at the wheels
iv come to realize that light cars rock!
so fun the just throw into the corners.
so when this MX5 came up for sale i couldnt really help myself.
it had the all the right stuff for a good track car!
i picked it up the other day for a good price.
it goes hard for a Mx5.
It has a Trust TDO5 16G turbo kit ext Gate
Trust intercooler kit
2,5in exhaust
it did have a NOS 30 hp shot but i took it out.
wolf 3D plug and play ecu
sports shocks with damper control
some fuel pump
it does have a rebuild motor but i have no idea whats in it.
and needs work.
short term list of things to do:
:The car has been hit in the front and has been fixed cheap and nasty.
so we realine front guards, lights, bonnet, front bar and paint it.
: fix up the shitty kit intercooler pipes and intercooler
: mount the radiator and fans because they where just sitting there.
: fix a oil leak/s
: just a all round clean up (engine bay , etc)
friday i got stuck into it
oil change
leads
cam cover gasket
cam cover paint
removed the NOS kit
removed the gauges that where on the dash, there where 4 of them.
and stole my sisters wheels off her car.

saturday/ sunday
body work time .
panel and paint
its a cheap taiwan bonnet so we couldnt get a nice gap inbetween the head lights and front bar and also the front bumper frame was welded on so we couldnt really move it to where we needed it but all and all it fits ok.

Like!!!
Light car, and with a very underestimated engine to boot, should go very nicely at the track. So many aftermarket bits and pieces available for the MX5/Miatas compared to 323s. :( Corksport, AWR and numerous other businesses will become your best friends lol.
Keep us updated with progress on this!

Will definitely be keeping an eye on this build. I have loved MX5's for ages!!

thanks guys
Josh i will keep that in mind if i need anything.
This afternoon i gave it a wash , took off the over spray that went on the window.
the colour is not perfect but it looks alot better than it did.
will try and get some stuff together for wednesday.
i need to poilsh it and start fixing the intercooling pipes and intercooler and mount the radiator and get another small skiny thermo to make room in front of the engine.
fingers crossed it should be driving again on Australia day.

WOW! good it goes to the right hand!
this thing is an absolute beast!
does it spins wheels on gear 1,2,3,4?
MUST do a SKID!

Lightweight cars are so much fun and im sure this mx5 delivers. Any future plans?
Awesome project, when i get back into it this will be exactly the sort of thing i do.
Might not be anywhere near as fast as the evo's/ sti's etc but you'll be having more fun.
joshg123
24-01-2011, 09:39 PM
Considering you can extract 400whp from a standard displacement engine, with the right brakes and suspension i think it could be quicker than some evo's........
It all depends on how much money you want to put in.

The car is almost in one peice and i can drive it again.
this weekend i will finsh it off and post some more pictures.
Future plans will be a different intercooler , set up the suspension , and try and find some better offset wheels.
040501912 you wouldnt know anything about the engine would you?
Eg: if it has pistons ,rod , etc
c.rusli
28-01-2011, 09:20 AM

update:
Have just installed another 11in thermo fan.
Fits really well and has given me heaps of room in front of the engine.
I did a order on the net which included:
-clear side lights
-clear side Reflectors
-Eternal Badge for the front
-Windscreen Washer Nozzles
-new dipstick
-Stubby Aerial Kit.
and a few other bits.
Also i think i have found a roll cage for it too and with a bit of luck it mite fit under the hard top. Fingers crossed!
bad news: the rear main is leaking bad.
so iv got another weekend job to do.
apart from that its coming together nicely.
:)

lololol you obviously don't value your spine much... Very keen to see how it goes with coilies that stiff - my little bro is looking into buddy clubs for his NB SE but doesn't know if he wants something that stiff
Damn Bender,
Your car is coming along nicely man. Looking at the engine I can see it looks like the 1.6. Is it a NA6 shell as well?
I am also in the process of building a hairdresser's blow-dryer and look forward to mixing it up with you at up and coming track days.
Do you know if it already has the 7" 1.8 diff in the back? If not go easy on the little 1.6 apparently even the LSD version doesn't take much abuse before breaking up.

update
well the yellow speed coilovers are in.
the ride is really stiff and it turns awsome!
it still sits pretty low aswell.
i have a track day coming up soon so i will be able to try them out for real!
i have painted the roll cage satin black and i think it looks much.
(i will post some pictures later)
I have been looking into a different set of wheels for it not because i dont like the SSRs but just so i can swap for different every now and again!
i have found two sets that i like
1st set:
they are steelys 14x8 with a 0 offset
2nd set:
now these ones i love and would look awsome on the mx5 but i the only thing that has stopped me from buying them is tires!
i dont know how much / if i can get good tires for them.
SSR MK2's
13x8 front -2 offset
13x10 back -14 offset

there should be more pictures somewhere (everyone took pictures)
I have had my fun in being fully hellastickout the guards.:D
but i just cant drive the car like this
I have sold the rollcage and have another one that will be cams approved once i have finshed with it .
i have had a problem with the car idling at 2000rpm asked to mx5 guys and they gave me a list of parts to check, checked them all and it turns out it was a small plug on the bottom of the inlet that mush have popped off during boosting :o
I have a new list of things to do now:
-New piping /intercooler/plumback
-fix a rear main seal
-get tuned (maybe on E85)
-get Cams logbook for it
so it went back to how i had it :

Lol, POKE much??!!
What kind of power does this make??
Mr Bender
13-09-2011, 05:05 PM
Dont know yet .
the last owner said it did 295hp atw on 1.3bar but he didnt have the sheet to prove it.
i think its up there because this thing isnt that slow but i will put it on the dyno once the new cooler is in and find out.

Mr Bender
13-09-2011, 07:08 PM
Im sure if i start dropping clutchs with wide sticky tyres i will start breaking stuff.
Engine wise i think it will be fine being built and all.
Gearbox don't know (with abit of luck it will fry the tyres or the clutch before it does a gearbox but only time will tell).
Diff is the same diff they use when they put the V8s in them so it should be right.

New stuff:

window washer bottle that fits under the window
new oxy sensor , Reversing switch
new Blitz Boost gauge and a 330mm Nardi wheel
and a coil on plug set up which uses hilux 2.7 coils but i had to change it because it looked shit.
Pictures explain:
how it came

Rods are the questionable part, 1.8 rods will give trouble over 300hp, 1.6 rods will do 350hp quite happily.
Pistons are in teh hand of the tuna
Never seen a crank break i my time of working on these series of engine, ive seen them as far as 500 engine hp
The 27th of November will be an interesting day at the Speed Dome...
Looking forward to hearing the anger from your little motor again! ;)

UPDATE:
intercooler is in , piping is in , front it on
It is 100% better than it was , now there is no more air leaks so it needs a tune badly.
I will go see if i can get it tuned next saturday fingers crossed! and i need a black rubber pipe for the throttle body too.

UPDATE requiredplease
A little mobile phone shaped birdie told me that this car got tuned today and good times were had by all.
Mr Bender
13-11-2011, 11:41 AM
yes the car got tuned yesterday
it made 270HP atw @16psi 8000Rpm
maxed out the injectors!
the last tune was shit!!! whoever tuned it was in a rush and didnt really know what they where doing!!
as the fuel pressure was at 80 PSI!!!!!!
the dwell timing was way out and the charge for the stock coils was about 2x higher than it was ment to be.
IT is a different car now , so nice to drive fast and slow.
it goes about twice as hard as it did before!!
if i get a set of 550cc injectors and use 20psi i will see over 300hp atw!
also before everyone says BHP isnt at the wheels!
my tuner has said its at the wheels and thats its just how the print out was.

does it have cams/headwork?
Power seems a bit too high up the rev range if not...
Mr Bender
13-11-2011, 01:54 PM
it has had head work done but im unsure on the cams.
there is another guy in perth that has/had the same turbo kit on his mx5 but he uses a stock turbo B6 bottom end he made the same sort of power.
this is what he posted on another website:
This will do approximately 175rwkw or 235rwhp at 14psi on a B6 motor with a decent ECU and fuel system. More can be had if the bottom end is forged.
Current power
On daily fuel map running 14psi boost will be 175 rwkw or 235 rwhp (from memory).
At the track, switching to a different fuel map running 1.4 bar or 20psi boost gets 229rwkw or 307 rwhp.
All this from that little 1.6 litre
I was suprised aswell i was thinking maybe 250hp atw at 14psi.
but Barry (dyno tunner) said these are great, little, strong motors and the way its set up
is great.
Congrats Bender that curve looks very linear. It must be very nice to drive is it as predictable as the printout shows or does it come on like a filthy animal and brake loose?
I am so keen to mix it up with this MX5 and the LS1MX5 if it returns from the brink of death.
PS who is Barry and will he tune my Haltech this week if I can get it installed before Track Battle Wed night. Oh and I will grab the BoV this week when I am back in Perth.
Mr Bender
13-11-2011, 05:48 PM
it drivers really good Gaz it comes on hard!
a good predictable power deilvery so its really good to drive.
Barry is a old Guy in queens park he has been around the tuning sceen for years and knows what his doing even tho
the gets confused some times!
Barrys dyno tune next to the cannington train station (queens park side)
don't bother trying to ring him just go see him!
since he has finshed tuning race cars he might be able to fit you, in just go ask!
PS: i didnt want to tell you i got my car tuned yesterday because your car broke down!
MrSparkle
16-11-2011, 11:04 AM
Went for a ride in this thing last night.
As you can imagine very fast little car and it just moes out so good in any gear. obviously you have to rev it to get the most out of it but its not laggy as such (still got loads of go in the low gears) it just really moves out above 5000 rpm.

update:
I have made a air box and installed my new steering wheel.
also brought a Radiator Cooling Panel which seems to work but i really need the bottom part to direct
the air from the front bar to the intercooler.
since its been tuned iv been to a few track days at the speed dome!
its so much fun to thrash around !!

Update:
well i have made/brought some new stuff.
1st: I made a exhaust manifold heat sheld.
2nd: I got hold of a underbody Panel which will go from the front of the nose cone right to the crossmember. i just need to cut it so the intercooling pipes will fit.
3rd: Front Indicator Intakes which will allow HEAPS of cool air into the engine bay and my air box!!!
4th: brought some NB front brakes (which are a bolt on replacement) they are about 30mm larger disks (i havent put them on yet because im not sure if my 14in wheels will still bolt on i will have to test them)
5th: some where along the line i brought a set of the gayest offset wheels that i could find because i thought it mite be a good idea to fit a set of TOYO R1Rs and the stockish offset so it would handle better.
I havent been on the track yet with these tires but on the road they are picking up rocks so its a good sign.
I mite be replacing the rims with 15x7s or 8s +15 ,+25 when i get some spare cash.
They will be replaced with either rota's or sportsmaxx ,XXR's.
Don't know why i brought they gay rims ( i do dumb shit some times)

can get that at veales/repco/ any parts store...

Thanks mate, I knew,ACL made it just wasnt sure if it was only avaliable from race shops etc
Mr Bender
15-01-2012, 08:45 PM
I got that heat sheld stuff from super cheap , it was about 50 bucks for a sheet 700mm X 300mm.
just take care when cutting it / handling it,I have some new cuts on my hand from this shit.
Great work. Would be tons of fun.

I havent done anything for ages but i did buy some
GSL RallySport A1RM pads front and rear and larger later model front brakes which is a bolt on brake upgrade.
Also I brought a set of 550cc Rx7 injectors too ( i havent installed any of these parts yet but will when i get some spare time)
so once all these thing have been put on i will get it tuned again and (fingers crossed) hit 300hp atw at 18 psi

Update
the brakes where giving me the shits because after two or 3 good stops they would just give up!
so i brought a upgrade kit from the USA which is a Wilwood 4 pot front kit .
it has
#Two piece rotors (11in )
#forged Dynalite calipers ( 4 pots)
#braided stainless steel lines
and all the mounting hardware, pads and wilwood fluid.
the only bad thing is that i don't think i can use my 14in SSRs anymore which sucks
there only a 11in disk but i dont want go any bigger than a 15in rim.
but the car should stop really really good once i fit them.

had the same calipers on my pulsar, work great on a light weight car, and have lots of pad choice
Great buy Glen I have no complaints yet although I think I am locking up my 1.8 rear brakes...must need a huge wing or better suspension.
Your front wheels will sit a little wider and not all 15's clear (based on offset and design). I just went to 16x8 grids in +25 and you couldn't fit any paper between the spoke and the caliper.
A4RCC have some spots left for their skidpan next Sat if your keen to test them out :)
Mr Bender
31-03-2012, 06:28 PM
well brakes are in and work wicked!!!!!
Gaz ,good to hear you havent had any problem!
The brakes clear my 15in wheels fine and there a gay 15x7 +40 but i have heard that people have problems with trying to clear them with some 15in rims.
as for next week if i wasnt going away on a shooting trip i would be up for a skid pan Day!

Surprised it doesn't stand on it's head when you stomp on the anchors!
But definitely makes the '5' look like a contender!
Mr Bender
14-04-2012, 08:08 PM
well It had a small exhaust for awile and today i started it today and
it sounded like it just blow the exhaust manifold gasket away!
so i pulled the turbo /manifold off (Was easy too) thinking it was a manifold gasket .
Nope, two cracks in number 3 and 4 pipes!!!!!
so a call to a mate ( BEN ) said he will weld it up for me and add a few extra braces and have it ready
tomorrow sometime for me!!!

I am having the same problem right now too ...well not the melting dip stick part though. I have cracks in the same spot on 1&4 and 2 cracks at the collector. Seriously considering buying a new manifold setup, either braced or cast.
Bender didn't you have one of those wafered heat sheilds around your turbine and dump already?

that 3 mm sheet that hes used to brace it would still flex a bit.
sweet build though mate! would be a fun car
thrtytwo
15-04-2012, 08:40 PM
That's What I was thinking. It's thinner than the pipe, won't add much support. Should of done 5mm gussets. Then it wouldn't compress or expand.
Mr Bender
15-04-2012, 09:17 PM
yer maybe it shoud of been thicker
but something is better than nothing.
besides its lasted about 10 years like that and its stanless steel
Trust/greddy must of done something right for it to last that long!
a funny feeling is telling me it will crack again tho but only time will tell.
thrtytwo
15-04-2012, 10:28 PM
like you said, better than nothing, and it's not like it will crack tomorrow, so I wouldn't worry too much :D
Finger crossed for you mate! This is the second and last time that I will be welding up these stainless pipes before crossing back to a cast iron setup or Steampipe.
Will be keen to run head to head at the track even though your pushing more hp than me :)
Kaido
16-04-2012, 05:03 PM
maybe get a brace welded up to where the gate section is a bolt it to the frame of the car.
Stainless is a prick, had mine crack on me 2x times even after having it Coated
Get some round bar welded onto it like this to support the turbo. Shouldn't flex any time soon.

i am also going to buy a set of small drop in cams and see if i can crack 300hp atw without winding up the boost.

Update
I had a race day at midvale speed dome last week .
car went good ,stopped great ,no overheating at all.
And i got to try out my proxies R1Rs , they are great , a much better tire than the old 14in tires i was using. stuck like glue all day long.
I tryed to put my new engine mounts in but i couldnt undo the bolts from the block , so it will have to wait untill i take the gearbox out to fix the rear main seal .
I have brought some more stuff aswell.
I brought a Fire Extinguisher ( because last week a car caught fire and i dont have one and dont want my car to burn)
a set of Kelford cams ( just some 256s ) but i have to wait 6 to 8 weeks for them to get here.
http://www.nolimitmotorsport.com/2/kelford-cams.jpg
and some new wheels too.

and since my soft top was stuffed i brought kit from the US that replaces the soft top with this :
its called a G-string bikini top ( im still unsure if i like it or not ill have to wait till summer to try it out)
http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp165/mrbender82/P1010469.jpg
next on the list is
+wait for cams
+tint
+oilcooler kit
+larger injectors
+300hp atw

update
well iv been saying i was going to fix the rear main seal since i got the car and never did!
and on wednesday i got a txt from my brother (mr sparkle) saying the gearbox is out!
the easest gearbox i have every taken out!!:D
anyway the clutch in it doesnt look the greatest , heat marks on both the flywheel and pressure plate.
and the 6 puck doesnt have alot of meat on it .
so i want to buy a new clutch kit and have narrowed it down to these two.
first one
is a full face clutch , with a rate of 353 lb/ft of torque pressure plate , a lighten flywheel.
which thay tell you to use if you have 300 hp or more.
http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp165/mrbender82/08-36000.jpg
the second one
is a twin plate clutch which uses a 7.25in disks
400 ft-lbs Organic twin disc 14.0 lbs
CNC aluminum one piece clutch cover
Heat treated steel diaphragm springs
12.9 rated hardware throughout
One piece net forged 4140 steel flywheel
it was designed like a motorcycle Clutch.
http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp165/mrbender82/949racing_725_twin_clutch.jpg
there is about $400 difference in price.
i did buy arp flywheel bolts , and a clutch line.
but i just need to make up my mind on which one i want to pay for.
thrtytwo
27-05-2012, 01:56 PM
do it once, do it right ;)
Mr Bender
28-05-2012, 06:28 PM
last night i ordered the twinplate.
i went with
do it once, do it right ;)
now i will play the waiting game untill it gets here.
Mr Bender
11-06-2012, 07:22 PM
well all my stuff that i have ordered has turned up.
clutch kit
clutch line
APR flywheel bolts
redline gearbox oil
and my $15 rear brake disks!!!!
iv cleaned up the gearbox tunnel and started to pull the engine out because as it turns out my rear main wasnt leaking but it was my sump!!
and in order to take that off the engine has to be lifted up so i can remove it.(i havent done it yet)
so well the engine is lifted i will be able to see what pistons are in there!
i have also got my engine mounts in they where a shit job too.

Mr Bender
24-06-2012, 06:13 PM
well
the clutch is in
gearbox is in
engine mounts are in
car goes again!
it turns out the rear main wasnt leaking it was the sump and to take the sump off you need to lift the engine 200mm
so i did that and found this engine does have forged pistons and upgraded rod bolts so that was good to see.
the two rubber seals that seal the sump where missing and in place was about 10mm thick gasket goo as well as fixing up the turbo drain because it was just good into the sump and leaked abit.
so i fixed that, new rear main , sump gaskets.
now the clutch is awsome!
the car revs like a bike ( 2.5 kg flywheel will do that) and it is still very good to drive but on idle its abit shit because of the engine mounts .
they shound sofen up abit after some driving tho.
i also replaced the short shifter with a stock one because im not a fan of that shifter.
there SHOULDNT be any oil leaks now (touch wood)
anyway pictures enjoy:

i had a ball , did a skid , spun out and still drove it home (so thats always a good thing) didnt get any picture tho.
Got my kelford cams (only 8 weeks) but i saved $350 so thats good
also another dip stick ,Super Tie Rod Ends from RHD japan (to fix up the steering arms.)

update people:
well a few weeks ago i went to collie and had a BALL!!
car was fine (until a injector clip came off) but i drove there , around the track and back without any problems.
but when i got home it sounded a little more like a truck , exhaust manifold cracked again!!!!
which was shit because i didnt want it to crack!!
but i was planning on putting in the cams , injectors and the ATI damper then retune with more boost after collie anyway.
so Im getting a new one made up at the moment out of steam pipe and should be finshed this week!
so far
i have installed the
*ATI Super Damper (it was a pain in the ass! )
*installed the cams
*cam gears
*new timing belt
*new cam cover with bungs for the catch can
*new catch can
waiting to install:
*new wastegate
*rebuild / high flowed turbo
* retune with antilag !
i called around to get my turbo rebuild and high flowed and the cheapest place i could find was $900 just for highflow.
fuck that!
so i googled my turbo and found that i could buy a turbo rebuild kit , new 18g front wheel and a new housing all for $250!!!
A order was placed and 3 days later i had my high flow kit.
so the plan is to install new turbo , manifold (when i get it) , wastegate with 17psi spring and retune , I should be close to 300hp ATW !
sorry for the shit pictures !
so this is how it went:

For your turbo high flows/rebuilds give Glen a call.
Dude nice work on the turbo rebuild & hi flow. Who made your catch can for you as I will probably get one to use as my windscreen washer bottle as mine melted at the track.
Will drop by one weekend to check it out!

Haha yeah it is still here just haven't had room in the last few trips might have to make a special trip just to transport it or you could pick it up when you come down on the 8th for a run!
What was so painful about the superdamper? I am looking to get one soon.

it was hard to install because its pressed on (bloody tight)
its hard to keep the key lined up as i pressed it on and the timing belt has to go on at the same time.
i had to heat it up in the oven and press it on with the bolt and try to keep the key way lined up .
the sway bar is in the way and just a prick of a job! but its on now and not going anywhere.
i do have a puller for the ATI so if you need to get it off just ask.
yes I should be down on the 8th but just have to check what day my work do is on.
otherwise i will come get it when Im on holidays.
i dont need it so there is no rush.

hello
i got my manifold back last week .
As well as getting my turbo balanced.
the manifold is Awesome. Steam pipe FTW!!!
had to make a new dump pipe which is fine because the old one was shitty , so i went around looking for a 3 bolt flange couldn't find one so i made one.
the dump pipe starts off 2in then steps up to 2.5in pipe.
and i have to mod the intake pipe to refit the plumb back BOV.
also need to make the pipe for the wastegate as well.
anyway pictures:

ok after weeks of being lazy i have got it back together.
but the alternator is charging to much (16.5 volts on idle)
i had to change it because the ATI used ribbed belts not the v belt.
so i haven't driven it yet but i think i have found a new alternator .

Keen to see the new tune.

Big update:
after having problem with people to tune the Wolf or who thought they could,
I decided to upgrade to a Haltech Sprint 500.
so i brought a sprint , 850cc ev14 injectors , and a few jerrys of E85.
and wired it all up and removed all the old stock ecu wiring.

i messed around with the program to get it to run on the e85 with my laptop. and booked it in with rotomotion and drove it there!!
it felt good to wire up a new computer and install a tune, change the tune , get the car running and then drive it to the tuners!
it didnt go well tho, as the spark was not burning the fuel under any boost.
so i decided to wire up a set of Ls1 coils i have for something else.
so i wired them in and made a set of leads.

so back it went to rotomotion and happy days.
it made 232hp at the wheels on 17 psi low yes but John said his dyno reads low since its been upgraded.
after driving it , it has so much more midrange the car is so much faster!! so the cams worked really good as all i wanted was midrange.

as soon as it was tuned i payed for the antilag super Cruise#2 .
but the night before the SuperCruise my clutch master died!
my brother (mrsparkle), dad and myself where up until 2 oclock that night trying to fix it but it didnt work.
so a new master and clutch was installed and now it works great!
but its now the time to move on to a bigger, better, faster car so i can hand out chop again.
so its for sale! http://antilag.com/forums/showthread.php?60705-FS-1992-Mx5-Turbo-with-many-mods.
That's the end of that chapter!
thanks
