View Full Version : BMW E30 Build Thread

Hey guys,
I have bought another BMW :P After having enough of the police hassle and costy fuel bills in my old 32 skyline.
So I have acquired an E30 318i old school mate. Knowing the car has been well looked after and has a good body bar some usual dings and dents, I thought it would be a great starting ground.
Anyways I will try to update this thread more than my previous project threads.
Make: BMW
Model: 318i
Body Type: 2 Door Coupe
Year: 1990
Colour: Zinnerberot Red
Engine: 1.8L M40
How it started:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r181/pavsta/IMGP2566.jpg
First things were first and the car required some attention to a bent in front LHS Gaurd and bits and pieces but decided on some 16X9 (0 offset) REARS and 16X7.5 (20+ Offset) FRONTS

Wheels on the car with some strecthed rear rubber

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r181/pavsta/DSCN0163.jpg
Had some problems with the front Wheels sitting to far in and rubbing against the Front Struts, so chucked some 5mm spacers in to fix - However currently got 20mm Eibach Bolt to Hub spacers on the way to fix this problem and to push the wheels to the gaurds.

Front Reiger Lip Installed - Happy atm with this Lip but may look at a MTECH 2 bodykit later this year.

I wish I found the full door ones too Mark - Vito from Bimmerclubinc.com only just mentioned that he found full doors ones :(
Owell better than what I had originally planned - was going to just perspex the wholes in the door or cut the whole door inner frame out.

I used a splined shaft with E34 UJs mated to E30 ones. Speak to DanThe on E30Zone.
As for 5stud, I only really want to do it with E36 M3 fronts (so I can run the brakes)...any idea what parts or costs ASV have on the 5stud gear?

Wow!, Just stumbled across this - that is one clean looking E30! Love the wheels and have been waiting to see a pic of them on an E30. I always wanted to do a beams 3sge conversion into one, but a 2.7 stroker should provide hours of fun :)!

Thanks Mooro
Im actually looking at a different set of wheels and changing a few things up on the exterior, 16's are just a tad small and dont fill the gaurds as nicely as a good 17.
Only problem running 17's though is that you can only run one tire that keeps the same rolling radius of the car.
But fingers crossed I can get the right wheel and stretch the right tire :D

So just another quick update,
Finally decided on new wheels - I was going to get the Borbet T wheels in a 16x9/7.5" but then decided not as really wanted that phat look on the front aswell.
The borbet T's still in my mind where a cheap wheel. So I have tracked down some genuine Gotti-made Aluett wheels (same style as the brobet T's) - Acutally Borbet copied these :D
Much lighter, much nicer and 16X9 ET 15 al round :D
Very happy

I was going to keep a lid on this but here is what has happened.
After lossing some interest in my car and especially feeling a bit bad about the overall condition of the paint and it also being red.
I decided to cut my losses short and sell off what I didn't require anymore and get something that can I can:
- HAVE FUN ON A TRACK and MOTORSPORT EVENTS
but
- STILL DRIVE EVERYDAY if i want to.
So I bought this:

It's gained a few bits and lost some others since I last had it. It won't take too much work to finish it up nicely. This is what it looked like when I sold it except for the rear muffler hanging like an 80 year old scrotum.

Cheers Dave for that - it was only probably 2-3 years ago I was picking your brains about a 2.7 build for my e30 wagon :D Now I get to own your car.
Dave - what exactly is the exhaust, twin 2.5 or 2.25"? Is no where as near as raspy as my wagon which was headers, 2x 2.25" with twin supercats and a rear twin in twin out barrel.
FIRST PLANS:
- Change headlights for Hella Smoke's
- Change rear lights to Smoked
- Change front indicators to proper smokes
- Install RyanG Splitter for is lip
- General clean and tidy up
NEXT PLANS:
- Ground control coils in
- New control arms and front hubs/bearings
- Treehouse racing control arms
- Engine, tranny, rear subframe and trailing arm urethane mounts
- 3.73 LSD from the red e30 to this one
- E36 Short rack from red one to this one
- AKG DTM shifter

Haha yeah I got a lot of questions about 2.7 builds from everywhere. That build thread on ecca seemed to attract the world.
Exhaust is twin 2.25" I THINK until the collector after the x pipe then it's 2.5 to the end. Twins all the way makes m20's raspy as shit, don't like it like that. The front half of the system (extractors to the end of the twins) is the btb system that I imported from the UK, a lot of the e30 racers over there use them and they've been tested to buggery so I thought they were worth taking a punt on. They make a huge difference to the lower and mid range. Also fkn expensive so enjoy it!!
The front indicators, just take the lenses out, take the orange insert out and fit orange globes instead and you'll have proper smokes. Something I always meant to do but never got around to it.
The car should be mint by the time you do all that work to it. Will keep track of this.

BTB headers! must have a made dent in the wallet. Those headers are awesome!
Sully
04-04-2011, 12:30 AM
Yeah they weren't cheap but I did get them a hell of a lot cheaper than normal. They were the last ones from the batch, think the system cost me $1600 instead of $2400 or something like that. Well worth the spend I reckon.

Got the proper smokey's so will put them on from the old car.
Just having some issues atm - with blowing some blue smoke on both acceleration and deceleration. Did a oil flush and put some new better grade oil in see what that does. Guy before me was using 20-50W XLD Premium Caltex (cheap $25 for 6L crap)
Also not too happy this morning to find that the previous owner lost the socket to the lock nuts to the wheels, not only that but to hear that he bashed a socket over the lock nuts to get off for new tyres but put them back on instead of normal nuts - wheres the logic?
Anyways, thats my vent.
Be a few update pics later tonight/ tommorow

That's good to know, I thought it'd be around the 160rwhp mark but could never confirm it, the car was having a sad on the last dyno day I did and it only spat out 130 or there abouts. Misfiring at about 4k rpm. Never did it before, never done it since.
The car used to keep up with Ash's (Ghost) e30 m3 that'd had a decent bit of work done to it so I'd imagine at the drags it should go ok. It can be a bit tricky to get off the line though, LOTS of neg camber when you dump the power in. Rear end squats big time.
I'd be running pretty thick oil in that engine. The block would have a lot of km's on it by now and hasn't exactly had the easiest life in the last 6-7 years.

Mmm... Ill drive it till it gets real tired and replace/rebuild the bottom end of engine with the nice head :D
Should be a bit better with squating once the coillies go in, then its just a matter of not spining all the way down in 1st.

Yeah that was my plan til someone threw a bag of money at me for the car and I found a Porsche instead! I was thinking very carefully about doing one of the ireland engineering stroker kits when I did the rebuild. Shouldn't be any extra work to be done to take advantage of the upped cc's. Injectors are the only think I'm not sure about but they're cheap as shit for these cars.

MMm... thats the plan.
Drive till its really loosing power. Tehn prob go for a 2.9/3L stroker option and go the ducks on the bottom end. Hopefully this will be in 8-10months time so can get some decent funds together.
Once the SAFC on and Z32 AFM tuning isnt a problem really.
Hows the 944 going? My bros got his white one down the bare metal, got all 968 running gear for a 3L twin cam conversion.

04-04-2011, 11:35 AM
Yeah the 944 has been misbehaving. The clutch shat itself the other day, a small spring from the clutch plate dropped out and wouldn't let the clutch disangage so had to pull the whole thing apart to fix that, replaced everything at the same time seeings as it was all apart. FUCKING EXPENSIVE JOB!! Transaxle cars seem like such a good idea til you have to work on them.
Now it's got a mystery coolant leak and I'm hoping it's not the head gasket on the way out. The car is awesome when it's working though, so much grip! Traction is pretty awesome, it's a novelty being able to launch a car and not dissolve the rears all the time. Just gotta deal with all the old car things that happen. Not used to having an old car that hasn't had everything replaced in the last few years.
the 968 gear should be good in the 944. Big jump in power and torque over the old 2.5 litre.

Yeah I managed to destroy my bro's clutch and gearbox :D Was the turn of all the modifications finally.
Trying to convince him to FI the 968 3L though... A turbo 944 would be able to keep up easy on the NA
Sully
04-04-2011, 01:03 PM
yeah there's a few turbo'd 3 litres getting around. Big power! Do eeet!
The numbers are really similar for the turbo and 3 litre. I think Turbo has 5-10 more hp and the torque is almost identical. Killer for the turbo is the lllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggg. 80's turbo tech is awesome.

Dave what was done to the bottom end of this car? Completley stock 325e block?
Smoke is only at 5000K back offs - me thinks valve stem seals. Held at 3000Rpm for 20 sec and let go off the acclerator and nothing.

Yeah the block is a dead stock 325e jobbie. It hasn't been rebuilt ever and I reckon it's got close to 300,000 km's on it now. Was going to do it when I did the build but we had a look at it and it was all in pretty good shape so we didn't bother.
The head was completely redone when I built the engine so I'd be looking at the block before the head for troubles. It only used to smoke for me on hard gear changes when the revs had to drop quickly to get on the power in the next gear, never did it on back offs so it sounds like it's slowly getting worse.
Diff might be getting a little tired. It always used to lock up and spin both for me!

Before and after photos too come!
Found why the rear end was a little jumpy and shaky - diff mount is complete ripped of on one side. This will def be changed for a alu or a polyurethane one come diff change time.

HOLY FUCK! Looks like the car hasn't had the nicest 18 months since I sold it!
All the shit on the shocks! Diff mount is surprising. That would be 2-3 years old tops. Sounds like the cars copped a proper flogging.
Looks much better with the smokies back in.
