View Full Version : general thoughts
whats up all!
just wanting everyones opinon on this one. what does everyone think of the 300 Z and the VG30DETT engine.
considering the type of car it is compared to its release date, (89).
i think the best critisism is from those who know there shit.
all opinions welcome.
good -
bad - :flipa:
without tryin to sound too rude, the vg30dett were an absolute pingpingpingping of an engine, they shit headgaskets like u wouldnt believe, corrode heads in a bad way & are basically the worst fucking engine nissan produced...yeah they make reasonable power with little mods but is common knowledge that they were the most shittiest engine nissan made...(and im sure others will agree)

quaility of the engine aside.
They are also a nightmare to work on .. any repairs are insane $$ because of this too.
They go very hard though with very little work. Can also handle quite well.
thanks guys
all this is good, keep the opinions commin'. don't worry, i don't take the shit to heart, just want to know where the experts stand
thanks again.

slug is right, they really are an absolute pile of shit for reliability. I know of several ppl who have sold there's, simply because they're just a never ending saga, especially with the heads.
On the plus side though, they are good cruisers, and the auto slushers are one of the best going (imo). Torque is pretty meaty and available very early in rev range, so mashing the pedal @ low rpm brings nice, instant, linear power.
But at the end of the day, anything good the VG has going for it, is sadly marred by its temperamental nature.

Some of you may know John @ UAS (over east)
Hes got a 300ZX turned into a track car, which is no drag car, which managed a high 10 second pass with what I believe were twin S15 turbos at the time? I think they're GT2530s/GT2540s now.
Its been around for quite some time, and proof that once its been sorted, the package can be quite potent. In terms of a track hack theres no GTR here thats topped his lap times yet (far as I recall)
oi thanks guys
this is really good. its good to hear from people who really know there shit.
keep up the good work.
thanks alot
catch ya  :D

I have an 89 300zx TT and have had absolutely no problems with it. They have a bad name when it comes to reliability but this is usually second or thirdhand info coming from people who usually dont know anything about the car. Dont buy any sports car unless you intend on spending money on maintaining it otherwise you are better off with a Camry or something.
The Z is an awesome car to look at, to drive and to own, just don't buy the first one you see. Make sure you buy a good example. Like any car, if it has not been looked after it will give you trouble and this is often the case with imports afterall most of the japanese dont service their cars because they aren't worth anything over there.

the bad name definately isnt 2nd or 3rd hand info mate....is first hand from friends that have owned them, so i'd consider yourself very lucky that your Z has given u no hassles as yet...(and i emphasise the "yet")
and as for "Dont buy any sports car unless you intend on spending money on maintaining it" comment, that would apply to cars in general (including a camry or something) & not only "sports" cars, as i'm yet to own a car that hasnt required any money spent on it maintaining it...
p.s your z does look good though... :)

hey
its hell good to hear from actual zed owners. i also have and 89 TT, and i spent almost a year looking for the perfect one, eventually i found the one i have now, which is in show room condition, if it wasn't over 10 years old, it would be considered a level/class/stage 5 import. (what ever the correct term is, its pretty ****ing good.)
lets keep in contact cos i think we can share some ideas. where are you located?
pm me anytime.
thanks for the support, and again thanks to everyone else for your imput, even if not supportive its still appreciated.
