Took the Statesman for a drive earlier tonight, first time it has moved in 2 weeks.

I don't normally drive the car in Power mode (the tune has been played with, line pressures are up a bit when in Power mode, normal or close to when not), however tonight I decided I would.

Took off from the lights at regular pace, and as the car has gone to shift into 2nd gear, I hear an almighty BOOOM from under the car and the car shook violently. Rolled to a stop.

Put it in Park, and it rocks on the parking pin - no strange noises.
Put it in Neutral, car will not move AT ALL.
Put it in Drive/etc, and with the foot off the brakes, it sounds like it's smashed all the teeth off a gear - metal grinding noise.

Here's the kicker...

Put it in Reverse, slight winding noise... however if you slowly feed it power, its as if it's stalling up on the brake, and the car moves forward.

Now, I'm not sure if I've obliterated another gearbox or if I've done a diff this time. I'm starting to lean towards gearbox - planetary gearset perhaps?

I did manage to limp the car about 1km @ 5km/h in Reverse gear (with forward motion) - the car was "stalling up" at 2500-2700rpm. If you fed it much more power, you could hear it jump teeth on something.

Anyone got any clues?

Quite the opposite, I was actually pretty impressed at the fact it had foward motion in reverse!

From what I can see, a recon auto is cheaper than a decent diff.

Might see if I can squeeze the money together and just get a cog-swapper instead!

Easy to rule out rear diff. Raise the rear wheels off the ground, disconnect tailshaft from gearbox, rotate the tailshaft by hand and see if the diff works properly by rotating the rear wheels smoothly or crunches around.

T56 ftw, not sure if you can manage skids in a manual though :D

whats a drive in/drive out t56 conversion worth? doable for <4k?

Yeah can be done for under $4k, so will be looking at that path instead, funds permitting. Will know more when I get back from my trip :)

First thing on the cards is the exact trick that AndrewT described, take out the tailshaft and see what happens from there. Will be coming out anyway so it can get towed.
