Hunting around for a stock L98 for the torana for engineering
Has to be bog stock so prefer a brand new engine really and something untouched
Cheapest i can find is $6300 from holmart but i swear they were only around $5000 a few years back
Anyone in the known on these?

The LS1's were $5000. Never the L98's I am almost 100% sure.
We sell the motors here through Crate Engines Australia.
We could do it for the same price as Holmart & it is here in WA & you can talk to our mechanic as we do a fair few conversions.
We also do a 550hp 6ltr GM motor which is a direct bolt in for any LS1/LS2/L98 engine bay for $10,800inc GST
We can discuss what is required for a conversion. E.G. Computer, wiring harness, etc.
We can also do a Carby 500hp GM 6ltr Brand new motor for $7,700inc GST

Capa in S.A seem to have the best deal at the moment.

The reason they got real cheap a year or so ago was holden was trying to get rid of the excess stock of L76's and LS2's from the VZ platform.\
Workshops baught up bulk quantities and waited for people to buy and up goes the price.

it was gmmotorsport evlgurl, big talk on aussiev8.com.au about it
they can no longer do the cheaper price due them getting a large shipment at discount in the early ve days. can you match capas price in the L76?
what is differences between L76 and L98 ??
the 550hp kit is no good to me as i need it to be completely standard for engineering and my pre application is for 6.0 so the ls3 is out of the running

Been emailing on phoning all day and everyone is recommending LS2 blocks with L98 heads... what the?
I'm deadset on a brand new crate engine though for engineering.

well an l98/l76 the "same" engine. l76 should have a vz sump. l98 will be for ve.
however the block is pretty much same same between ls2/l76/l98 as there all 4" bore. differences are in cam profile and heads used.

So L76 heads same as L98 heads?

From what Im told the L76 is the better engine.
You know VZ had LS1 , L98 and L76 all in 1 series !

all the ls2 vs l76 vs l98 heads say the l76 has some DoD shit in the top end and weird shaped ports? i'm no mechanic though.

If I recall correctly the LS2 had better heads but the L76 had better cam , or vise versa ....

Yes that's what I thought the difference was.. L76 had the DOD and L98 did not. As for the head design, should be same same. I run L92 (L98) heads and L76 intake.
The cheap prices are gone gone gone, as Dave mentioned, the excess stock clearance meant that shops were buying the engines in dirt cheap. Was talking to John at SQP about it a couple of months back as he got quite a few when it was available.
Be aware that there are still guys around pulling out their low km stock engines to put in bigger ones and you can snap up a bargain from time to time on LS1 forums.
Mark, as for the MP1900, if you wanted one cheap I've found a website who sells them and the 2300's for about 6-7k. Capa are obviously smart enough to pass on the exchange rate specials to Aussie customers, which is nice to see.

Neg, and that's where HSV fucked up. LS2 has the cathedral (LS1) style ports, and the L76/92/98 have the square port heads.. They flow way better from the factory, so the SS > HSV in the VZ/VE range.

L76 & L98 & LS3 same heads except L76 had DoD in them and others dont
LS2 heads pretty much same design as LS1 heads but with extra flow for the increase in capacity of engine.
L76 & L98 & LS3 > LS2 heads
The LS2 engine had a bigger stock cam than the L98/L76 plus some minor exhaust and tune tweaks is where hsv got the 307kw over the SS 270kw
VE SS/SSV/CalaisV L98 > HSV E Series LS2 (307kw)

and to make it even more confusing the americans call the the l98 an L92 because thats what the part number for the engine in the trucks is.
So after all this if you do get an L76, it will more than likely have the DOD equipment in it, so if you go to change the cam at a later date it will be heads off job to replace the lifters.
Also remember that the L76/L98/VE LS2 uses a different reluctor & cam sensor so it will not run on an LS1 computer..... unless you get the Lingenfelter conversion sensor box.
I run one of these in my vy ute so i didnt have to change reluctor wheel and sensors over. Costs about $500.
oh you'll also need to get hold of 2x ls1 knock sensors so you remove the new ones and retap the thread holes.
And... lol injector adapters. Which I have a spare set of you can have for $60.

So it was vice versa , I was close :p
So L76 has the better heads but shit cam !

shouldnt have any issues until its ready to go for engineering and back over pits though, its pretty grandpa spec
