How much work is it to install one of these buggers? Huge? or just straightforward but time consuming?

More importantly, is it worth the time?

Any info appreciated, I don't know a lot about these but keen to help out a mate if I can.

Yeah man... piece of piss to install.

Worth your time... Fa sure. Google informs me 85-87hp gains at the wheels :)

Goodluck Mate :)

Make sure you wind more boost into it to compensate. I understand you should be able to run at least 2-3 bar without too many issues.

What brand kit? Does it come with a replacement bumper beam and a set of instructions?

Not hard to do if you have a decent quality kit, but you'll be wishing you never started if you have a poor fitting kit that doesn't line up properly.

Hardest part is cutting the bumper nicely. Do it slowly and trim small bits off multiple times, rather than taking off massive chunks of plastic all at once.

You won't be able to use the stock airbox with the FMIC, so if it didn't come with a pod filter intake included in the kit and he hasn't already got one fitted, he'll need one.

OK see this is where I need help :)
because I don't play with WRXs I didn't even know you bought these FMICs in kit form - I was picturing buying the cooler itself and a couple of pipes/hoses etc and doing it that way.

Anyone recommend a nicely fitting kit for this, what sort of price/hp is he looking at?

He's currently looking at an STi upgrade top-mount and an STi turbo with catless up-pipe but I'm somehow sure a front mount will be a much better option ?

Front mounts are rarely the better option in wrx's. Prepare for lag and bad throttle response. Saying that it is possible to over come the ill effects of a fmic with the right set up. Should head over to Perth-wrx for a good source of info rather than asking the Datsun experts on AL.

If you buy just the core, then you're in for a world of pain.. NEED the kit. Greenline.jp as mentioned by Damo, sells all the good Jap kits.

Alternatively, the Process West FMIC made in Australia is an excellent bit of kit.. I recommend it even above some of the Jap kits.

STi TMIC is good, I have one and it makes great power and is responsive. As for a catless up-pipe, your mate won't need one.. up-pipes are only needed on 01/02 WRX to replace the cat converter.. MY07 hasn't got a cat in the up pipe and therefore doesn't need an aftermarket catless one.

Which model STi turbo??

yeah im gonna agree with BALISTC and recommend a Process West item.

i have one of their top mount intercoolers and the quality is awesome, have also seen their FMIC kits on a few wrx's and the piping fits nicely too.
