View Full Version : Telstra 30mbps Cable Internet vs iinet?
SINISTR

hey guys,
i've been with iinet almost 10yrs now, two different homes, various setups - had Telstra for local calls and line rental but about 2-3yrs ago switched over to iinet exclusively. Im on the 70GB plan + line rental and silent number/call display stuff - total per month comes in over 100 bucks.
Door knocker today from Telstra is offering me 100GB Cable 30mbps plan, free line rental etc for $79 + free modem etc etc.
I've always been happy with iinet but this is a very good deal $ wise, so wandering if anyone has Telstra cable (im in Ballajura) and how they find the speeds/reliability etc.. would it be worth it? its a $40 saving per month and apparent 7-8 times faster internet.
Many thanks
Mike

problem is cable is a shared medium.
If all your neighbours take the offer up, your speeds will likely degrade.
Also likely you will be locked into a long term contract.
check what your upload speed is and if they are counted towards your traffic too.

Why not get TPG unlimited DSL with bundled home line for $60mo?

Because tpg is shit, too many customer for small service thus slow speeds.

^ that last point lonewolf made is the primary reason I switched away from telstra/bigpond cable.
Some gaming applications (and obviously peer to peer sharing) have significant upload streams that will rip through your quota.
Although quotas are a different beast nowadays to when I jumped ship(about 4 years ago). 100gb sure softens the blow of your uploads being counted... And so does $40 in your pocket.
If you can get some specs on the offering (are uploads counted?, what is the upload speed? What are the call costs?) and how you use the net now (games / torrents or just browsing for porn), then it is a bit easier to assess the deal.
Sorry I can't answer your specific question - I had it installed in Kensington.

i get 200gb adsl2 from telstra for $69
yes uploads are counted towards it though
but who torrents these days?
s1mon
04-12-2010, 10:46 PM
Can you get DSL2? If so get iinet's 50GB + 50GB with voip for $60pm? Or if your a download whore like i am, 200GB + 200GB for $90.
Dont be fooled by the 7-8 times faster, if its a good Fibre connection you will have better latency or 'Ping' (note: Telstra have always had shit connections). But for download speeds 'most' of the time you will be limited by the website uploading to you.
Personally I would rather set my balls on fire than sign up for 24 months with Hel$tra.

We are on the telstra cable 50gb for $50. Can't get adsl in my part of Duncraig. Its great for what i use it for. I'm no gamer tho. But do like downloading back ups for my music and movies.
But yeah as they said sometimes it goes a bit slower because our whole street is on it. But i doubt that you would have many in your area with it so it should be sweet.

The free line rental line from telstra is bullshit because you still pay a minimum of $60 a month for the home phone package from memory.

LOL yeah nah. In August they were the 3rd largest ISP in the country behind Telstra and Optus.

I was with iinet for about 3-4yrs....switched to hellstra cable....cancelled it after 3 weeks because of UNRELIABLE SPEEDS, there WAS a problem at the "pit", even a contracted techie they sent said their was a problem but telstra would need to send their own technician to fix the problem with the amplifier. Sometimes speeds were AWESOME, but when playing games my ping was SHITHOUSE and all over the fucking place, constant spiking etc, and according to their shithead support "100 ping is okay for local servers" (fuck off pingpingpingpings!)
Also managed to get them to cancel the cable without being slugged a "cancellation fee" - I complained to the ombudsman about their PISS POOR SERVICE, NOT WILLING TO FIX A KNOWN PROBLEM, it basically shows that telstra don't give a fuck.
Telstra is shit. I'd rather shit sync speed DSL provided by iinet thank you.

ALSO I saw that you lived in Ballajura, I too lived in Ballajura (and also another mate, who "coincidentally" had the same issues as I did and cancelled within 1 week lol) - The cable in Ballajura is fucked. If you play online games on the PC I would not recommend changing from iinet...

FYI the ballajura exchange has no free ports at the moment.
Client in malaga running to it can only get ADSL1 too.
but agree with your post :)
TPG are growing quickly, putting in their own stuff at exchanges like IInet do

Friend had their unlimited plan and spent three months with literally zero internet connection trying to get out of his contract. Had to go to the communications bureau to get out of it.

Plus their technicians only work 9-5 eastern states times, so if you've got a job and you have problems, you're fucked.

thanks for the replies guys.
Im leaning towards sticking it out with iinet - giving them a call on monday as see if they have any plans they can better for me - I do a bit of gaming and if thats one thing that suffers than stuff that.
iinet has a 100GB plan for less than telstra + phone rental will work out the same - i'll see if they can better it.

Fact 1> Telstra are the worst customer service ever !
Fact 2 > Cable owns ADSL.
If you want the best and can hanlde being on hold for 30 min every month as they screw something up then get Cable.
If you happy to get good internet and go ape at hold music and talking to machines then get ADSL with someone else.
FYI the "sharing" cable thing is a bit of a myth. All internet is shared at some point.
On cable I get solid 18-22mb down and worst ever is 14mb. Always get 1mb or more up. You will struggle to get anywhere near those numbers on ADSL2.

Fact 2 > Cable owns ADSL.No. It's just faster, and only sometimes. Plus there's other factors that come into it.

You will struggle to get anywhere near those numbers on ADSL2.I get near those numbers on DSL2 and I know a few more people that do. I've also known cable internet to run at speeds comparable to dialup because when everyone in the neighborhood gets home from work/school they all hit the internet hard, and everyone in that suburb are using the same link. (The sharing thing isn't a bit of a myth.)
It all comes down to where you live. A lot of poor bastards can't even get ADSL1, let alone 2, let alone cable. One of the main things about cable that I don't like is that it doesn't have quite as much competition as DSL does, which means the ones that DO offer it don't have to work as hard to keep you happy.
Bottom line: I'd dip my balls in molten lead before I go back to having Telstra as an ISP again. No matter how sweet the deal seems, when it all goes titsup it's not a very pleasant situation to deal with.

lol, i can understand that statment.
They are soooo bad.
My choice was ADSL 1 on a rim which means its even more shared then cable.
Or telstra cable .......

Ports? I mentioned nothing about "ports" - we're talking BP cable, not adsl.
BP cable, or dsl = shit.
The Ombudsman have as close to zero power as usually makes no difference.
what?
I saved myself $300 by taking my issue to the telecommunications, internet ombudsman or whatever it's called - you don't know exactly what happened between me and telstra so yeah..leave it at that before you claim that it "makes no difference", because telstra were keen on ripping me off $300...which in the end I never paid after taking the issue to someone else.

Yes in theory Cable is great. But like anything in the world there is always a bad example (and OP lives in the same suburb I did, as well as another mate...we had numerous problems with games)
When I had it I DID get speeds between 18-30mbit - it was unreal.
But even with those speeds my pings in games was SHITHOUSE and all fucked up.
General sharing, downloading, torrents = cable was good.

you make a complaint to the ombudsman and they get fined...
not, you make a complaint and its reviewed and they may get fined, if you make a complaint, the company gets fined. obviously there is a point where they can dispute it, cant just go around claiming wild fancies, but if you have a genuine issue and are not being treated fairly, complain and telstra will take notice, if only briefly, and make an effort to set it right / release you if you so desire.
personally i am willetton and our internet is coming through the batemen exchange (8+km). coming through mostly Cu wire but there is some Al in there and it is fucking our shit up, getting crazy dropouts and interference. i will personally have 1JZVL suck the dick of the person who can offer a valid solution to our woes, the internet companies promise the world and then try and lock you in with their bullshit promises, 2 years of amnet working on the problem and the best they have come up with is...
"oh you are having line problems? here lets drop your connection from 8mbit to 512kb, internet works now, problem solved, enjoy the internet like they did in the fucking stoneages!"
izzit worth going to something wireless? most importantly i need an isp w/ WAIX, therefore iinet, amnet etc

also works with mobile phone companies, when my gf got a samsung on a contract that died the next day, after 2 months of no phone, and them wanting to make her pay for a month she didnt even use the sim due to a lack of phonage, one mention from my old man to a pleb on the other end of the phone that "we really dont want to make a complaint to the ombudsman, we know it sucks for you and it will just create hassles all round" resulted in imediate call transfer to some superviser, bill whiped started from day 1 and phone upgraded to iphone for a fraction of the cost.

The last time I needed to do this (about 5 years ago) they slung you $200 if you didn't have a landline with them.

Plus Telstra is actually good, if expensive, in this field, rather than just shit and expensive like most other things it does =P
Im with OPTUS DSL 120gb / month at home and Im happy.
Best mate works for Toolstra and I give him shit about it and Im not the only one.
Say NO to ALL telco door knockers - some are scammers and can not be trusted.
