OK, so I have a Netgear DGN2000, running wireless-N, with a single wired ethernet connection to the ps3, on TPG unlimited ADSL2+. Have zero issues connecting to the net, networking etc using wireless, including with the ps3.

If I set up a wireless connection on the PS3, download speed test gives 2.8MBs (which is about right for this house, pc is connecting at just over 3MBs), upload is about 1MBs.

However, as soon as I try to switch the ps3 to wired connection, it tries to do the connection test, and fails at the download/upload speed test.

Exact same setup worked with no issues at the old house on Dodo (how's that for irony).

Have tried setting ps3 a static ip, setting it as a DMZ, and/or port-forwarding on the modem, also tried using open-DNS/google DNS addresses in the connection settings on the PS3. Nothing works, I either end up with failed speed tests, or ridiculously lowered speeds compared to what the wireless connection yields.

Is this a TPG specific issue? From searching whirlpool etc, it appears TPG can have some DNS issues, but I havent been able to find a local solution.

Try a different cable and port?

or iiNets DNS server is 203.0.178.191

DNS shouldnt affect speed though - it's only used to resolve hostnames to IPs and vice-versa. Try plugging a computer into the network wired and see if you get similar results? That way you can isolate it down to where the problem may lie.

Process of elimination.

a)Test Using another device on same equipment
b)Power cycle hardware after connection
c)Replace cable

Ok, have tried different ports, and cables, into PS3 - no change.

Running download PC off wired connection rather than wifi - 100% functional, no difference in speed.

Have tried using iinet/telstra/open DNS addresses in both the routers settings, and also in the PS3 settings - both yield failed download speed tests on the PS3.

Its really odd - particularly when the wirless connection works fine. Change nothing, except make it wired, and it just runs sloooow.

Will see if I can get my hands on a second modem/router and see if that changes anything.

Have resigned myself to just using wireless connection for the meantime - getting download speeds of ~2.5MBs on the PS3, tested online gaming with GT5 (which is all I really want to play online) and it appears to work fine, so if that speed using wireless will suffice, I'll leave it at that for the moment.

Depends on the ISP and is set in the modem, won't enhance the PS3 performance as the PC is A-OK.

Whats it like with data-transfer across the network? Could be a shifty network card?

mtu is set at 1492 on the modem. have tried setting it on the ps3 manually, made no difference. If I set it lower (1450), the PS3 would throw up a warning sayign something along the lines of the modem not being able to deal with fragments or something.

streaming videos from download box to ps3 via wired was slow, even low-res stuff constantly buffered.

will try streaming to a laptop from the DL box over the same wired connection, see if its the same dodgy speed.

reading a lot about the dgn2000 having issues with lan ports, seems like I'll be upgrading with the xmas sales.
