Hey fellas,
Just wanted to know if any of you work on oil/gas rigs and if there's any internship/vac/summer work or just work in general.
My last exam is tommorow for my 3rd year of chemical engineering(oil and gas- upstream). Next year will be my final year.
Woodside is supposed to be calling me to tell me if I have a job or not with them this summer, but if I dont, then I'de reallly like to get some experience anywhere in the industry.
If any of you blokes have hook ups in the industry or need extra help from a keen student chemical engineer that doesnt mind getting his hands dirty then let me know!
Cheers

If you can't get a job with Woodside, give Schlumberger a look.

Chevron is the goal. Woodside is good, but Chevron pay more, have better benefits and is far more organised as a company :)

yeh got rejected by schlumberge already, and chevron too :(
but schlumberger is my ideal goal.... hopefully grad postion. But for now, ANYTHING will do, i just want some hands on experience in the field. I'm owning all my oil and gas units specific for offshore and crude oil production and highly motivated to learn more on site.

Get in touch with Employment agencies like FIRCROFT, GRN & ACS. We (Clough AMEC) get alot of our vacation student engineers through them guys & have a major Woodside Contract on the go atm, as well as a big Chevron Project.

You work for Chevron Evman?
My company recruit for Chevron and various other Oil & Gas companies - in competition with Fircroft, Brunel, Dare etc.
Chevron tend to find their own Grads for vocational positions (named the Horizons Program / Initiative).
Have you tried more upstream EPCM & service providing companies at all?
Baker Hughes, Intecsea, Technip, JP Kenny, GE Oil & Gas etc, Heerema, DOF Subsea, Acergy etc...
Inpex, BHP Petroleum, PTTEP & ENI (both operators) might also be worth a look alongside Woodside & Chevron.

North Rankin 2?
Tendering for NR at the moment.
Evman:
He's right chevron pay more initially.
Benefits are pretty close to the same, apart from 9 day fortnight.
What are you basing 'far more organised as a company' on? Better website?

Not everyone within the company or on both project teams are eligible for the 9 day fortnight either...
Who do you work for Jerk?

Far more organised came from three different Woodside employees that were previously employed by Chevron. All three said they had issues getting ID card to simply enter the Woodside building where Chevron had these sorted the day they started. One even said he was on a week long training course with Woodside but they forgot to get the trainer in from OS. All three agreed that Chevron was better organised. From my personal experiences with Woodside organising a chopper flight with two weeks notice is hit and miss.

And Woodside go and build a flare tower in Karratha that isn't cyclone rated, and the same issue with the HVAC system on their new platform.

Give Rigtech a call too...
They will give you some "hands on" experience in the oil and gas industry.
They supply operators for FPSO's and well as maint personel....they are only a small company though.
If you wanna just do some fill in operator job to get some cash during the summer, try contacting GRN too.
Chevron is where it's at!...

Transfield Worley hold the current contract for NR2 ops & maintenance.
Check out seek.com for land rig jobs, there are quite a few out there, just dont tell them your only after internship. Century rigs are always recruiting. Most operators prob wont expose a chem engineer to rigs. maybe platforms and refineries. Chevron will not give you any hands on experience. only hands on experience with be through Scumberger, haliburton etc.. Scum will give you best vac work. Your oil & gas course coordinator should also have a list of companies you can contact. Best way to get a job is to meet face to face at SPE sundowners etc... You should be looking for the job throughout the whole year, that is the prime goal, harder if you start looking right at end of exams.

Yeh went through the whole process. Seems like they are snatching up all the 80+% average students for vac work. Mate got Shlumberger, he's on an 86% though. Got dropped from Woodside, they're cutting back due to the fuck up on the Pluto project which is costing them heaps.
Oil and Gas expo coming up in a couple months, will probably try there again.
contacted most of the companies mention above, with no reply. Is it me, or don't their staff attend to the emails?

Welcome to corporate HR. Get used to it - it doesn't get any better.
Just keep at them!
Also makes it harder to blow you off if you turn up in person.

How on earth are your mate's marks that good?!
In mech eng marks come back almost randomly with little resemblance as to how good your project actually it.

There's a few 90%+ too, they all got vac work with no previous work experience. I'm assuming some people are just hardworking and naturally smart.
Could be just my year group? but then again you cant compare the 2 engineering degrees. They're different in their own way.
