You need to plug the drive into a PC and format it as FAT32, then the PS3 will recognise the drive.

Is it brand new drive with nothing on it?

What operating system does your PC run?

Connect it to your PC

Go to My Computer, right click on the drive and select 'Format...'

Select FAT32 from somewhere in that menu, then format the drive.

It will wipe everything off the hard drive so back up whatever you want to keep.

If i right click -> format it gives me the option of NTFS or exFAT.
Is exFAT what i want?

um, exFat is "FAT64"

Don't know that a PS3 will read it.

Hmm, exFAT=FAT64 so I'm not sure if the PS3 would recognise it? Have to ask someone that owns a PS3.

No not exfat, you need to find a 3rd party app that can reformat fat32 on hard drives larger than 32GB.
I'll try and dig up the one I used

EDIT: It's the one cplagz posted

lol. Windows XP has a limitation on formatting drives over 32gig as FAT32.

Download that application I linked you, open it, find the drive and format it. Plug into PS3, win.

Don't forget, if you want to actually access anything on the drive through the PS3.

Press 'triangle'. Go do 'Display All'.

Then it will come up like it does in explorer.

Not if you setup the folder structure correctly.

The folders are
VIDEO for movies/tv .etc
MUSIC for audio
and I think PHOTOS.

However the PS3 does have a limited folder structure depth by default - I think it will only go 3 or 4 deep from root.... kinda like Brockas.
