Since antilag.com is the place for lifestyle advice...
I may have an opportunity to go regional, get a pay rise and advance my career by about 5 years.
I've lived in Townsville (15 years), Albany (2 years), and spent a heap of placement time and holidays in the South West so I've got an idea of the advantages and disadvantages of living in the country are..
But I don't know much about Broome / Derby / Kal / Northam / Canarvon / Gero etc, can anyone share experiences of living in such places. Need to know stuff about housing / weather / things to do etc. I know most of them are full of dusty cousins but in Albany they didn't seem to be such a nuisance as they are here in Perth.
Not keen on more of the miserable weather in Albany...
Bunno is probably my most preferred option as I can keep the car, hit up Collie and still cruise back to Perth on the weekend. But there will be a lot of competition for jobs there and I don't want to go ruling out some cool places just for that.

Born and raised in Kalgoorlie.
As far as housing goes you can live pretty well for good prices.. a lot of homes North of the city center are new and with a lot of FIFO/Temporary residence you have a wider range of rentals all of which are usually up to scratch.
Weather: when its hot its fuckin hot.. when it rains it fuckin rains.. lots of clear blue stuff to get on with whatever is happening outside.
I dunno about shit to do.. they opened a new Golf Course recently like some 5 star bizzo with all the fruit.. theres a lot of wide open spaces.. and wider streets one of the best pubs I have ever been to (The Exchange) is in Kalgoorlie but the nightlife can usually get on par with a bad night in Northbridge...few too many terry's with more money than sense.
The idea with Kal is to get in.. make money and get out kinda like Vegas... You can raise a family there and have your white picket fence..but its a very work orientated town...
Being 6 hours away its not too hard to get into Perth for a weekend either..

No way. I miss the weather from down there. It's my home town.
Perth people have no idea what a beach is either.

I miss it every day. The Waifs song where it goes 'i've been thinking of the red soil and those mango trees' certainly rings true.

DO IT
I work half way between Marble bar and Telfer, and there is some awesome country around the place. Would love to get myself a landcruiser/patrol/etc and do a big trip (think 3 months) up this way. Karajini (SP) etc....
In short, head far north, by a decent fourby, head bush on weekends/extended weekends.

country towns in WA are great if you like that kind of thing...
i've only lived in perth for a few years, spent the rest from down south to way up north and enjoyed most of it.

i like going down south
Lots of people like doing things they don't get to do often.
That said, I fucking miss Albany. Only get to go down once a year at Christmas time and maybe twice if I'm not snowed under with work during mid-year break. I'd gladly live down there to be honest purely because, ignoring ROE, there are a lot less idiots around down there.

Fucking lol!
Down south is nice, but the Kimberly is amazing. Some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet up there. The people are mostly pretty good (even the black fellas!) and the shenanagins that take place are pretty epic. Cops up there > Cops down here

unless you drive a commodore and like to get drunk/stoned every night of the week, i suggest should avoid geraldton

Lived in Kambalda for 5 years, fuck all to do, stupidly hot in summer..
Funny enough something about the serenity of that place at sunset, everything is orange, its still 35 degrees, all the insects are out. Riding home after a day out on the motorbike, fairly win.
Form of transport was a dirt bike up there, bush was all around you and you didn't have to transport your bike anywhere.. Get get on it, kick it over and blast away
During the hot days its shit
plus all the girls up there were hungry for cock at 12 years old. That was also win

Wickham - you will love it.
Broome is killer, Port Hedland isn't meant to be too bad and Dampier/Point Sampson are nice too - though business wise you would be set up probably in Karratha with either of those 2? I find I miss not being up there. Since work sent me up - its awesome.

Get a house in Karratha from 500k, but there are cheap units for less. Rent is pretty high though. Don't know about Broome, maybe try realestate.com.au or reiwa.com.au

^ Tis true, but IMO you'd want to find a house in Allanson, but I'm a bit biased

off topic.. Oi bangn East or West!? I was a Grevillea Crescent kid back in 2005? My fam still live there..

Allanson is majorly expensive
Only pro over living in collie then bunbury is close to work, travelling 1~ hour to work everyday will take its toll if living in bunbury

There are a heap of memebers on here from Kal... the car scene is pretty good up there. I lived there for about 12 years and enjoyed it. It is a small place though and everyone knows everyones business...
Infact, I'm heading there in about 12hrs when I finish night shift!!!

I have been back and forth from Kal a few times for weekend trips, and I actually quite like it out there - nice change of scenery!

i love the lifestype up here, everything is pretty cruisy and the natives all stick to themselves
so long as the wind is down on your days off you get awesome fishing, and heaps of awesome camping spots and scenery, can't wait for it to cool down again, planning on a few days at karijini (sp) national park
but when it's hot it's fucking hot, so hopefully you work indoors, fly's can be a right pingpingpingping during the day too, also housing, either buying or renting is absolutely ludicrous, like it's fucking mindboggling retarded how much shit is
but if the job comes with housing or decent rent assistance (800+ week) it's good
winter up here is absolute perfection
high 20s everyday and not a drop of rain, clear skies and awesome beaches
i can't wait for next winter!

Perth people have no idea what a beach is either. As someone who spent most of his childhood and early teens in Esperance, I can confirm this.
I'll admit that I only did the toursity stuff in Exmouth (inc fly over the place for a few hours) but if you know where to go, Esperance > Exmouth any day of the week.

My Dad bought our house there for like $14,000
How times have changed lol!!
It is a lovely spot though, can ride the bike to the Black Diamond, and you don't have that inversion layer of coal smoke in the mornings.
Bit of trivia for you, did you know that Collie has the highest incidence of lung and respiratory cancers out of anywhere in Australia? Coal mining 4tw!

, Esperance > Exmouth any day of the week.
my grand parents migrate between exmouth and esperance for winter and summer respectively. was born in esperance.
having a place in each and being able to do that would be nice :D
have lived in derby - quite enjoyed my time up there. Have also spent time in Karratha & Wickham - again, i enjoy the NW lifestyle.
if i had work opportunity to head back to the NW i wouldn't hesitate.
