Hi laggers,

I replaced the water pump on my bunky (Volvo 242GT) about 2 months ago and it has sprung a small leak. I highly doubt there is anything wrong with the pump as they rarely fail especially after only a few hundred kilometres. Im quite sure because its belt driven, the seal blows at high rpm.

Its a small unit and not hard to replace, pictured below.

My question is; should I go about purchasing an OEM gasket and refit the pump or is there a better option, liquid gasket perhaps?

Product names/stores would be great as I wouldnt mind fixing it asap.

Cheers,
Duncan.

I had a brand new steering pump fail after a similar amount of k's. The unit was faulty. It was replaced even tho i installed it myself and the warranty said it had to be installed by a registered mechanic.

Did you buy an OEM pump or a knock off.

Is it leaking from the mating face or the shaft ?

It's not OEM (Not stamped Volvo), ordered through AutoPro Bentley. After inspecting the original pump, I'm certain it wasn't faulty either, but thought it'd be best to replace because it looked old. I could see on the original where the seal had also failed; hence my hunch.

I'm not a mechanic but I think its doing its job, in heavy traffic the engine remains cool, and is only leaking perhaps 50ml per 20minute drive.

Between pump and block, mating plate.

Cheers for responses thus far.

Between pump and block would indicate it could be a couple of things

1) You may have damaged the Gasket putting it in or its not ligned up correctly

2) A part of the old gasket may have been left behind, when you applied the new one ( Iknow it seems like a stupid question but how well did you clean the mating surfaces)

3) You haven't used a sealing agent with the gasket (not always nescesarry but I never put a water pump gasket on without it)

4) Was the block coroded at all where the gasket face sits?

5) You put the wrong bolt in one of the holes wich has bottomed out and isnt applying pressure to the pump. and in turn isn't sealing

I cant think of anything else that would cause it to leak

^^ one or more bolts may go through to the water jacket, apply sealant on thread of bolt to fix leak ?

I replaced the water pump on my brothers KE70, was advised to strip backing plate off water pump and seal that up, as well as putting sealant beween the pump/gasket and gasket/block.

Hasnt played up at all.

Possibly.

Yes

3) You haven't used a sealing agent with the gasket (not always nescesarry but I never put a water pump gasket on without it)

Correct, only used provided gasket, what product do you recommend?

4) Was the block coroded at all where the gasket face sits?

Nope

5) You put the wrong bolt in one of the holes wich has bottomed out and isnt applying pressure to the pump. and in turn isn't sealing

Didn't leak for months, seemed to fit perfect as I'm quite thorough, but not a real mechanic.

Lacking sealant

OK, sealant it is! Advise a product in particular?

Your totally convinced its the pump to block gasket area? Ive had about 8 non gen pumps fail in the last 6 weeks from shaft seal failure. Normally ill use a GMB Japan branded pump, even those are failing along with various other brands.

If it is the pump to block gasket, use a stanley, make sure you get every little bit of gasket off and see if you can see any scratches or perhaps corrosion around the gasket area, if you put it on dry it doesnt allow for much undulation (sp) in the gasket surface for a leak to occur. If your convinced that your mating surfaces are good, either purchase a new gasket or you can make one if need be.

Either Greymax from loctite, or loctite aviation non hardening sealent is what id reccomend. I've not used any other sealants, but most silicone based sensor proof sealents will be fine.

Does it leak only when driving, or when stationary and when driving

We rarely ever see the original pumps on them fail, just replace the seals on the outside usually (aswell as the gasket obviously). I haven't done one in a while though, I try to stay away from the 2/740s haha.

just a thought the pipe that goes into the back of the pump (same place as the mating face) did you change the o ring on that? if u did put silicone around that aswel just to be sure and check that pipe isnt corroded

I use Loctite aviation sealant #3
The non hardening one

Part # used to be 3J

Works a treat

I'd say thats your issue... dry gasket
