Lots of crazy people out there who will thrive on that idea, "being the first to colonise a new world".

Dumbest idea ever imo.

ORR

The world is about to end (2012 hahaha), we just dont know it and this is the only chance of survival.

these are peoples lives we're talking about pingpingpingpings! with the money spent on sending supplies and shit I'm pretty sure they could get people back every once in a while

YES! And give them seeds, don't bother sending supplies, they can grow their own.

Better use of tax payer money IMO.

There's still room for one more;

I'm speculating this will happen before they even reach Mars.

Sorry if I stole your thunder again hahaha :D

I'd go.. providing the 3 below provisions are confirmed.

1) I would donate to a sperm bank, once atleast 3 genetic offspring are confirmed with still more on the way i go.

2) all out standing debt is covered and cleared prior to me leaving.

3) Porn must be able to be transmitted to mars, coz if im heading there with other men and only 1 women. I will need to keep myself controlled and the other blokes away.

That's it. just 3.

If you're starting a new civilisation, I presume there will be mass orgies happening there, otherwise how else are people there going to multiply? You'd better be hoping the chicks will be hot! There needs to be a good ratio too. No less than 3 hot chicks per 1 male. Sharing is compulsory. And they'd better be good cooks too! Oh, and make sure there's a way to have a supply of decent steak and booze.

These are my requirements. NASA, call me :)

Pretty spot on.

Many pioneering colonising missions were one way trips back then. Not too much difference retrospectively.

Send the boongs to mars.
they are so intelligent that they would make a colony in no time.

i mean , in the last (how ever many years old australia is) they have developed a lot of things ...

like ....

sticks ?..

Evolution and different living conditions turns them into freaks

"too costly to bring them back home?" these are peoples lives we're talking about pingpingpingpings! with the money spent on sending supplies and shit I'm pretty sure they could get people back every once in a while :confused:This is the main reason it hasn't already happened in the last 30 years. There's been manned missions to Mars planned as far back as the 70's, but they've mostly been shelved for two reasons: (a) it's likely that they won't be coming back; and (b) the U.S. had too many small countries to invade and sell guns to back in the 80's and 90's, using up all the cash.

ICBM's, radar, smart missiles and supersonic, high-altitude planes like the SR-71 blackbird had already been invented by or in the 80's. The U.S. government haven't really given a shit about NASA since then.

Unfortunately, Mars probably will never be 'colonised' or 'terraformed'. Since Mars has a much cooler planetary core, it doesn't have much of a magnetic field, and without that magnetic field protecting it, the sun's rays strip the planet of it's atmosphere, constantly eroding it into space over thousands of years.

Because of this, even if we manage to plant really hardy, surviving plants there, it will never have an atmosphere like Earth or Venus, and therefore any settling humans will need to live in a sealed colony, which is expensive to make, very expensive to maintain, and very prone to fucking up, all the time.

It sucks, but until we're able to build colossal mining ships able to just land and start mining+processing, any trip to Mars is going to be one-way, and therefore not really worth the effort =(

My anus can't be colonised; Too toxic for human visitors, and the massive gravity destroys any probes sent in.

Colonizing Titan ftw,

huge pools of liquid hydrocarbons which just rain down from the sky,

nitrogen, methane in large quantities, pools of methane and water on the surface,

atmospheric pressure similar to Earths (1.5x)

but best of all:

"The very high ratio of atmospheric density to surface gravity also greatly reduces the wingspan needed for an aircraft to maintain lift, so much so that a human would be able to strap on wings and easily fly through the atmosphere."

Dagon
01-11-2010, 11:18 AM
Strap on wings and also a spacesuit to survive the daily average temperature of 94.K (-179.C). Though this is possible - we would need a nuclear reactor sent with the astronauts, though, and pipe the superheated, irradiated coolant through the colony to keep people warm.

Sending a nuclear reactor to Titan, weighing many tons is a bit difficult, though. Cost of fuel into LEO would be the biggest thing, before you even start thinking about slingshotting around the sun/planets.

Mad_Aussie
01-11-2010, 12:40 PM
We should really just be focusing on colonizing the moon, then we could go up there and eat cheese all day long yeeeow

If you did it right the power plant would be the Method of travel as well.

Land then instant power :)

exactly.

[/geek mode on]
they did a similar story to that in a star trek enterprise episode.

background story for the episode was along the lines of the spaceship once landed was taken apart and rebuilt into buildings, structures etc.

then they'd start teraforming the planet.
[/geek mode off]

I agree though that it would make more sense for us to colonise the moon first. get space travel really sorted then go from there. work on space drives/ energy propulsion that doesnt rely on fuel.

However Mars does have an atomosphere, however fragile it may be, IF planned right, Atomosphere improved via terra firm and if the infrastructure is set up right (could be a thousand/s year project) its probablly a good place to go once our plannet is completley fucked.

We need a realistic plan to ensure the progression of our species or we are doomed to die out like the dinosaurs, we just prolonged it with fancy gizzmos to keep us entertained along the way.

So the plan once earth is fucked;

Only wealthy people from 1st world country can afford to be moved to mars
Third world country citizen stays on earth
Third world country citizen rode the earth storms and survived. Colonize a new world
Both people from two planets have intergalactic war
