So tomorrow is bulk rubbish collection day in my street so an hour ago i lugged out to the verge:
3 piece lounge suite
2 bmx bikes
old mattress
general rubbish
I just glanced out the front and the bikes and the lounge is gone and I now have a desk, small wall unit and bookcase.
People taking shit doesnt bother me but dumping new shit in its place? WTF?

Remember that my sister was moving house once during collection time, and some old lady tried to take stuff that was waiting to be packed on the trailer lol.

Ive had shit on the verge for 3 weeks waiting for it to be picked up. So far they have taken 3 tv's, 1 small desk, 2 farked brembo disks and this bloke was driving around cuting all the electrical cords off all electrical goods and leaving the ends on the floor.
What get me is that i stacked all this shit up nice and neat and these pingpingpingpings go and mess the shit up.

What's the point of that? Some people are on the bones of their arse, can't afford nice furniture and are usually overjoyed when something that is still usable is out for collection.
Instead, you go and break it so someone can't recycle it and put it to good use again.
I know that at the end of the day the items are yours, but what's the point in breaking it beyond use, when someone else can reuse it?

I did the same recently. Put out a heap of Commodore and WRX parts that have been laying around.
Some 2 hours later, a young dude comes to the front door asking if he can take the struts, springs and exhaust from my SS and WRX (ironically this stuff was still there), it was a shock to me that someone actually asked and was appreciative of the "gift"
Within 20 minutes he returned with a cold carton of Crownys - totally unexpected.

I rode one for about 5k's to get home one night, then put it on our verge, then next afternoon it was gone.
This year we had an excercise bike, book shelving, old fridge, and bike tyres.
2 days and it was all gone before the collection.

Put scooters out the front just randomly - no collection, and put free on them. Not even 2 minutes later I peered out the window thinking I heard something, and they were gone. /csb
There is a house on Albert Str cnr Hutton Str that I think goes and collects electrical goods. Always see trailers/trucks full of old fridges etc. Sometimes an old car too.

You would be surprised what some people will use. We used to look for an old dresser for the laundry or the shed to stack tools, an old fridge if we had a big party coming up (icebox on side). Hell i know a few who would pick up an old couch for Revheads every year.
On our street we have a prob with a few kids who make forts and cubby houses out of kerbside pickup stuff. Everynow and then it would collapse or they would climb one and fall off and one day might potentially hurt themselves....

When my younger brother was a proud member of John Howards skate team there was a curb side collection on in maylands where he lived, so rather than carry all the TV's, VCRs and other electrical goods up and down the stairs to his 3rd story unit from the curb side he threw a couple extension cords down from his unit then walked up the street grabbing stuff then back to his building plug what ever it was in to c if it worked. If it didnt back on the pile if it did it went upstairs. He ended up getting a 70cm TV, DVD player and a microwave. Then he went to Disksmiths spent $20 on a universal remote and was able to watch DVD and TV as well as cook 2min noodles.

Worst is when you're driving down a normal suburban road to overtake this beaten down shitter of a van with a trailer when the ignorant pingpingpingping of a driver pulls out as they haven't looked as they have too busy focusing on some pile of garbage on the other side of the road they could use.
That or they decide that the middle of the road is the best place to stop as it is much more convenient for them to search both sides of the road at the same time.

Few years back I was giving the old man a hand cleaning out the garden for rubbish collection. We had to push out the trailer out to the verge to prune some tree.
Along comes a rough looking couple in a shitter mini bus asking if the trailer was out in the rubbish. No doubt they got their bus from a rubbish pile when you consider the state it was in.
What annoys me are people who go through your rubbish pile and make more of a mess. Eg: you have boxes or bags of rubbish and someone pulls it all apart.

My uncle picked up a little 250 quad bike from verge collection. Replaced the pull-start, worked fine.
Last year we got random bits of wood and made a pirate ship for an International Talk Like a Pirate Day party.
As much awesome shit as I've got from roadside collection, and as much as it does benefit the poor sods that can't afford new stuff... I'm actually against it. Not because it makes everything look messy - I don't care about that.
It's more the fact that it ENCOURAGES people to be wasteful, something we don't need as a society, especially one that's about to enter a population problem. At least with the old system of just taking stuff to the tip, if you didn't have tip passes then you had to (1) pay to hire a trailer (2) get help from mates to take shit there, (3) pay to dump your load at the tip.
Now all we have to do to get rid of our shit is put it out the front and like magic it's gone in a few weeks. That's slippery-slope shit, right there. I know I'm going to get flamed from a lot of guys here that don't give a shit about this stuff, but people are already way too wasteful as it is.
Gleeso
18-10-2010, 09:57 AM
^^^I understand the points you made but, how is it being wasteful when it gives others the oppurtinity to take something that you may not need and put it to good use. One mans trash is another mans treasure.
Also, if people are gonna take the shit you put on the side of the road they could atleast not leave it a shit hole, as others have said.
Mad_Aussie

but people are already way too wasteful as it is.
Saying that roadside collection encourages people to be wasteful is a load of shit mate.
The problem is that the tips now cost money to go to, which encourages people to dump their crap in the bush. That is a huge problem, a lot of the spots we used to go pigging are now full of fucking car tyres and oil cans and fridges and shit. The local bush is becoming a shithole because of it.
The other thing that gets me, is that they constantly prattle on about the need to recycle etc, but they don't run a salvage service from the tip. The amount of good timber and metal etc that gets dumped into a big hole is amazing, every town i've lived in previously let you take shit home, or at the very least had a shop to get things through. Have built many things from recycled bits, I just can't believe they don't do it in the cities where you'd think there would be even more of a market for salvage.
Dagon
18-10-2010, 10:14 AM
The thing is, most of the shit DOESN'T get taken permanently, like the guys were talking about the bikes, before - it just gets taken and put somewhere else.
I'm just as guilty as anyone... for every one thing I take, I've thrown out about 4. Is this a standard ratio for most people?

The last shed I built out of recycled timber collected from around the place seemed pretty permanent...Well, good on you, and more power to ya! I'm collecting the timber to make a nice solid frame for my spare VR4 seats for outside recliners. I completely agree, though, the people that dump shit in the bush are disgusting.
However, what happens for most people that I've seen is that they take home shit, don't do shit with it, and then throw it out next verge collection.
Hmm. Does anyone actually know for certain where it goes once it's verge-collected? If it just goes to landfill then that will break my little hippie-heart... Does it get sorted and recycled, or go to timber/metal scrapyards at all? If so, my rant is null and void, and I'm all happy =P

I leave stuff someone else may use out the front of the house all the time, if someone else can put it toward good use instead of it rotting away/collecting dust etc. at least it is being re-used/recycled and not filling up the tip. If it is absolute shit, gets thrown out.
Driving past collections half the time you see people that have cut sofas in half on purpose because they don't want anyone else to take it - bloody stupid in my opinion.
Picked up a damn awesome washing machine that we set up outside to wash work clothing (oil, grease etc.) so not to wreck the normal washing machine. Worked wonders.
heres my fucking rant;

Have seen the same thing, perfectly working CRT monitor out the front for a day and someone had chopped the plug off. Didn't take the plug or anything, just chopped it so no-one else could get a free monitor...?
That and delinquent kids who run from house to house smashing any TV or basically anything glass before anyone else can get to it, instead of free goods for the less fortunate your suburb becomes littered with smashed glass and useless shit. Really making leaps & bounds for the human race those ones...

I am unsure about this... but I think the cutting cord thing may also be to do with making sure someone else doesn't pick up a faulty goods and get injured from it themselves.
Harvey's always cut the cord when ditching stuff to the green bin that was electronic, not to be a pingpingpingping, but because it was faulty, and apparently they could get sued (fuck knows how, but some how it would be there fault) that someone would take it, try use it, and get electrocuted/injured etc.
Maybe same for verge collections? Someone actually drives past and cuts them for that purpose?
dnl777
18-10-2010, 01:46 PM
Hmm... seems plausible however it is illegal to take from the collection pile without first asking the owners so I can't see how suing would be an option for the people whom have taken the items... and if it is an option it shouldn't be.
mr_mike
18-10-2010, 04:56 PM
1 reason i was told about them cutting the cord is actually industrial electricians doing it. They come along and cut the plug and say 30cm of cord of. Then next time they are doing a job in a warehouse installing them big lights on the ceiling or replacing them they wire the cord to the light unit and put a power powerpoint on the ceiling.
Saves hard wiring the light itself in and makes it easier if the light needs to be replaced in the future.
Have a look on a warehouse ceiling next time ur in one u'll c that 90% of the time the big halogen lights are fitted this way.

One of the guys at work cuts cables off appliances on the verge, he strips the copper out and sells it in a large bundle to a scrap dealer for around $200. I asked if he cuts cables off items that have "WORKING" or something similar tagged to it, to which he replied that most people (himself included) leave working appliances alone, as someone else more needy can recycle it.
