It's called rooting :)

Search around for an automated app that does it. Think 'one click rooter'.

Pretty much automates everything, so you only need to plug your phone in and click a few things.

Be sure that you do a Nandroid backup first.

I wouldn't bother if you're a noob.

You don't need to root it to install apps or customise stuff with android.

You do if you want to flash a Froyo ROM onto it.

But you will lose all data on it doing so.

Turn the phone off, and power it on while holding down the BACK button.... and paste the info in here.

It should be as simple as copying a file to the phone, boot into recovery mode and apply the "patch" to give you root access. That's how easy it was on my Samsung Galaxy, it's essentially the same as any HTC Android phone.

Still waiting for the official release of 2.2 Froyo for Samsung so I can do it all over again... :(

its a known bug apparently, shame no one mentioned it to meIf no-one mentioned it to you, how come you found out that "it's a known bug"? Sounds like someone didn't read the instructions... Meh...

Newbie quick FAQ, all in nice easy links:
The Market seems limited, where do I find more apps? (http://www.appbrain.com/)
Why should I root my phone? (http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/distm/allwhy_should_i_root_here_is_why/)
How do I root my phone? (http://bit.ly/cAyBud) <--- the one the original poster needs
Okay, I've got root, now what? (http://bit.ly/9b8Qq3)

Most importantly: READ EVERY GODDAMN WORD OF THE TUTORIALS AND DO NOT SKIP STEPS, even if you think you know what you're doing. I've nearly bricked my own phone on a few occasions because of overconfidence and thinking that I know everything.
