Hey Guys,
This is more a query but if you can help me out thatd be great.
So it seems like everyone is trying to get up on the mines and im jumping on the bandwagon simply because perth is a hole and i dont see the difference between living in a hole up north compared to living in a hole down south.
Ive been sussing stuff out for about a month now and it looks like no-one will employ you unless you have previous fifo experience, Which i unfortunately dont have. Drillers Offsider is about the only entry level position i could find and i think they would see my build and laugh at me considering the nature of the position. Im serving a years suspension on my license and have 8 months to go so HR license is a no go.
Question, are there any other qualifications i could do to make myself more employable (Some people have mentioned MARCSTA?, Working with heights/confined spaces, blue/white card)
Im not in it for the money atm, im looking for experience and would even be down for a cleaners position to earn my stars and stripes.
Im a hard worker and am accustomed to long days, not afraid to get my hands dirty.
I realise im practically unemployable for such a position but hey, everyone needs to be given a chance for them to prove they can do the hard yards.
Cheers for any info you guys can give :)

Give these SPANKERS a call: http://www.bruindam.com.au/bruindam/Home.htm
I WILL never EVER work for them again!!!!
Same as 99% of the workforce that was there with me, they are a joke!!!!
BUT they employ ppl who are new to the industry.
Put up with their crap for a few months and get your FIFO experience...
Bonus is any other company you work for after working for them will be F+#%NG awsome to work for

Pro Tip : Lie.
I know a few people that only got into FIFO work because they lied about doing it before.
Do some research, learn some key phrases and terminology and get some cheap tickets according to what sort of work you're after (eg MARCSTA, Safe Food Handling, Forklift etc). I wouldn't go shelling out for the more expensive ones like Dogging and Rigging unless you're asked specifically as a prerequisite to employment.
Don't forget to try agencies like GRN and Chandler Macleod.

Or jump onto a cleaning FIFO job up there for a couple months?
Gets you inducted into some sites, which could be beneficial?

Ive been applying for cleaning and hospitaltie jobs as ive had experience in hospitality.
I try not to lie but yeah it seems to be the only way some people can get up there. Some guys i know with less than half a brain and no qualifications are up there and they are lazy shits, all because they got someone else to write up their resume and cover letter.
Ill keep trying. Thanks :)

Have you had a look at ISS & ESS services? They look after a lot of the camps/sites Rio has - not sure if you can apply straight through them, but have a look...
And you may as well bullshit your way into it. Most jobs these days are obtained by knowing people in the industry.

Ive tried ESS, the jobs they had posted required fifo experience and wanted a couple of years cleaning experience. I sent my resume through just in case. I havent heard of ISS, ill give them a looksy.
Yeah, i know. Thats why i came on here, just to get some helpful information from people that know the industry.

ISS does Wickham/Cape Lambert. Not sure where else. Renowned for having shit crib room food at the moment. Cleaning wise is same/same as anywhere else I suppose.
With expansions going on, see if ESS can pick you up - they do the Cape Lambert Village and their contractor camp is building up soon again to another 500 spots (from the 780 or so currently) with another Camp being built at the same size (over 1200 people) next door to it. SKM also have another camp apparently as part of the expansion coming up. Could be a large influx of people needed. :)

IMHO... don't waste your time on MARCSTA!
It 'used' to be a prerequisite to get onto a minesite, but almost all sites run their own style of safety induction system, so basically you pay for MARCSTA and then learn the same stuff once you get the job.
Trainee job going at boddington: They are starting up their own blasting crew soon, might be worth a look.

rio sent out an email today advertising for new apprentices
i'm assuming (but not certain) it's for people who live locally but you never know, i'll forward it to my home email so i can post up the info
was for light vehicle mechanics, light fitters, heavy fitters, sparky's and a couple others
as said above don't waste your time on marcsta, meant something 10 years ago, waste of money now
dogging/rigging/ confined space and heights tickets are always looked for up here

Most of the drilling mobs will take anything with a pulse, they really couldn't give a f*#k. Be warned though this is a pretty rough time to start working a labourers job in the Pilbara / Kimberley (it starting to warm up) that being said alot of people snatch it around this time of year so jobs are going. Try Boart Longyear, Ausdrill Northwest, TDS, Nudrill ect failing that try a shitty Kalvegas based mob they will hire anything !

Thanks for the info guys. Im appealing my loss of license in court hopefully. I lost it for not wearing a seatbelt and then driving once without a license. Nothing too serious and im coming up on the 6 month mark.
Much appreciated. ill keep throwing my resume out there!

If you're really serious about it, get a job in Perth for a mining company and prove youself there, then ask for a transfer to a FIFO position down the track. You will need to commit to the perth role for a period of time (usually 12 months). Whatever you do, dont say in the interview that you want to go to the mines because they will rule you out there and then. Apart from that, if you're lucky you might find an entry level job, but 99% of the time you will need experience in the field of whatever job you are applying for in the mines.
