View Full Version : Cordless/Electric Rattle Guns
Anyone have any experiences with these? If so, what brand and how much did you pay? Looking at getting one to remove some suspension arms and didn't want to have to get a compressor etc. Have seen some cheap ones on eBay, any good? It'll just be a once off so not looking to spend so much and will be retired to wheel swapping duties after this.
Saw one that ran of the 12V DC car ciggie lighter at Auto One, not sure if it will be powerful enough? Wouldn't mind one that runs off mains if that means more power as well.

not sure what it's worth as my brother gave it to me, but i've got a makita cordless rattle gun and it did the job changing suspension on my 21yr old shitter.

Snap on and Milwaukee are the best I have used. Not too much difference in price, although the Milwaukee seemed to have more torque.

Got a fair bit of guts but they don't last very long. Also no control over speed / tourqe.
Bought a CP cordless one and never looked back.

hitatchi is good bang for buck, i use mine flat out all day every day, i work for Westrac field service in the goldfields so it cops a hiding!!! not as much balls as the snap on one, but cheaper and good for things that arent rediculously tight, should crack most things on cars.

I have both the snap on 1/2 inch and the 3/8 cordless, a little overpriced but are the ducks nuts.
kingchrome do a 3/8 version that one of the guys is using at the shop, seems to be holding up well and was about half the price of mine.
Hitachi lithium is the shit.
much better value...dont buy Ni-cad or anything like that anymore

Makita 18v Li-ion is the business. Citroen and Ford WRC teams use them. They are small, light and have 230nm of torque. I have used mine more times I can remember; would be lost without it.
Battery lasts for ages and when finally flat charges in full in 20mins!

I also have a http://www.makita.com.au/products/lxt/lithium-ion/item/lithium-ion/btd140rfe-18v-lxt-mobile-impact-driver?Prodid= which works just as well; you just need to buy a set of bits to go in to convert it to 3/8", 1/4" or 1/2" driver...

Went for a Makita 18v Li-ion Rattle gun....went the bigger 330ft/lbs model and its a monster, gotta be careful with wheel nuts but it`ll crack tight shit !(siezed up suspension bolts and crank pullies are no problem !)
Gun was cheap at $200, then $100 for the 3000 Li-ion batt which also suits my makita drill, seem to be very good value for what you get.

Snap on lithium ion is the best but obviously cost more and is quite weighty
If its only for limited use the Hitachi is probably the best buy and if you shop around you will score one for under $400
I have destroyed 2 Hitachi guns at work and im still on my original snap-on

been using the CP (chicago pneumatic) cordless in work for a few months now, havnt really had any problems, at full use can go for a good few hours which is no problem as second battery charges in about an hour.
was told by rep not to hold them on if the nut is too tight, but havnt come across that yet, they get a good 1/4 turn on the ones running off the compressor but set us back about $800 :\
worth a mention too, the old snap on cordless snapped a few studs in its time.. pretty impressive
Take advantage of the Weak US dollar...buy a snap on 18v lithium for under $600 online...

Have a DeWalt 18v 1/2" drive that I got from Ebay for some cheap price with charger and two batteries (NiCad). Cannot fault it, has taken off everything I've thrown at it including some pretty tight flywheel bolts, suspension bolts etc. I think they are all pretty good really.

topic bump.
just brushing through this topic, i see:
Hitachi lithium is the shit.
Makita 18v Li-ion is the business.
im assuming both these are considerably cheaper than Snap On?
what's the best size to get? (1/2" or 3/8" ?)
all ill be doing is wheel nuts pretty much, regular usage.
so is there a particular rattle gun i should get? or just personal preference?
dont fuck around with a 3/8 Tocchi.
Makita and Hitachi and considerably smaller than a snap on gun...but a snap on gun will undo driveshaft nuts or crank bolts that the smaller ones wont.
For wheel nuts just go with either of the green ones, for big jobs - snap on..
I have both, but keen the Hitachi in the rally car and use the snap on for work.

cheers. exactly what i needed to know :) as i dont do driveline work/engine work often, so id just use a breaker bar if i did need to.
best prices would be shopping online for Hitachi?
Can get them cheaper from the US (but the charge plug is different)
Online you could get an Aus plug setup for around about 450-500 i think?
as opposed to 700ish in stores...
Look it up maaaan!
Can get the Hitachi on eBay for 146 + 12 shipping.. Is this a good price?
with no batteries, no charger, no case.
Ha ha I didn't see that..
